I don't think costs are the limiting factor for next gen consoles

Cost of the hardware will not be the biggest limiting factor to their power. Modern GPUs take a good bit of power to run as well as CPUs. That power will create quite a bit of heat. I think that that power consumption and heat generation wil be the two biggest issues for the next gen consoles to start out as powerful as modern PCs. Unless they make those consoles fairly large to allow for a good PSU and a ton of airflow, they will just have to limit the hardware available.

What do you guys think? Yea, they could build a powerful console and sell for $500 or maybe $600 again, and they are going to be much more powerful than the current consoles, but to be able to compete with (at the time of their release) modern gaming PCs, do you think they will come close?

Sony would go pretty hardcore with PS4's spec as they have mentioned more than a few times. The raw power of a PS4 may not be similar to a 680gtx setup, more towards a 580gtx setup according to rumors but the games built for it ground up would look far superior to a high end pc rig though.

Well unlike PC gaming, where companies make money on the hardware itself, the console industry has the whole "give the razor away to make money on the blades" business model to consider. It wouldn't surprise me to witness some pretty hardcore specs for well below what it costs the manufacturers to produce. Like always, it'll be the games that make or break em.

and what, you think Sony and MS will have a huge GPU in their consoles? Consoles use everything integrated if you didn't know, that's why they can't just use any kind of GPU and they do tons of testing and stuff too. When the Xbox had the RRoD they knew about the problem even before they launched the console but they didn't care....

If a GPU is so huge and powerful that it can't be reduced enough to become integrated to the motherboard then that's a GPU that will not be in the console. But we all know that is a matter of the technology at the time. With time everything can be reduced to become integrated.

This argument again? They can easily put out a powerful machine for an affordable price, and they will take losses at the beginning to do so.

As for the heat, I think that they will be well aware of this already.

That's why I choose a PC because you have the most games, the best graphics, the best controls, and upgradable hardware. Buying a console is a huge step backwards for a hardcore gamer. Console are strictly for casual gamers.

My prediction: There will never again be a console game that looks as good as the best looking PC game, be it exclusive or multiplat. The cost of hardware is too high, and the console market is moving even further towards casual crap. Don't expect anything great from next gen consoles.

$ony are skint, they can't afford to put anything out at a loss. M$ aren't in such a bad way but I still can't see them pushing the boat out on a new console and taking a loss on production again.

You also have to remember we are in the middle of a global recession, there are a sh1t load of people out there far more worried about keeping their job and roof over their heads than forking out $600 on a new console.

I would love for the next gen consoles coming out with the power of a current high end gaming rig, it would give the industry the kick up the arse it needs. I just can't see it happening though.

excuse me one look at the ps3 at launch says other wise

its going to come down to the cost to the consumer as it always does ,

wii u already has the advantage , for many reasons , its the ps4 and xbox3 that needs to worry

because if they keep just upgrading visuals and nothing else what we will see is the same ol game just with a new coat of paint

that is not original by any means ,

wii suceeded ps2 succeeded ps1 succeeded nes succeeded snes succeeded and they were not the most powerful of their gen , without the help of add -ons for the snes ,

the price is a big concern for many people around the world ,

remember some of the well known brands fell due to high price and low profitability and sony is in the worst spot at the moment , they can not afford a powerful beast and as a result ms would be stupid to go for a beast , we all know what happens to the odd ball

They wont sell a 600 dollar console, they would give you a contract or a yearly fee.

They still have to deal with the expensive development costs and heating issues from using really powerful hardware.

I think you're academically wrong. I recommend you properly research such things because your arguement is easily invalidated.

Look at Intel's Ivy Bridge line up. The most modern technology Desktop CPUs and the highest TDP is 77W. What about discrete GPUs? In another threadthe Radeon 7770 was suggested, this has a max TDP of 80W. Sum of 157W, the original Xbox 360 PSU was 203W, leaving quite a few watts for hard disk, optical drive etc.

Furthermore, what about the TDP of a top APU with built in graphics? In another threadthey mention the A10-4600M, the max TDP of this is just 35W. It seems to be quite the capable chip, here is some footage at 1080P where the guy is playing whilst recording with FRAPS (every second frame).
