I find the new backwards compatibility issue entertaining.

Sony creates a cheap version of the ps3. They removed their bullet proof B|C for it. Now people are condemning the entry level version as a flop because its missing that feature? Yet retains the rest? Now I know part of this is just system wars. Which means 4 legs good 2 legs bad no matter what, but even common sense seems to poke through the fog every now and then.

There is an option. If you want backwards compatibility, you will buy the more expensive unit with more features. Much like the 360 has a core system that lacks everything & an elite systems that include extra items.

I feel like people will continue to rag on Sony no matter how much the bend over backwards for the consumer. I find it interesting that all the complaints are coming from 360 owners, vs future ps3 owners. The new wave of ps3 owners come next month are mostly going to be ps2 owners. They will still have their system because Sony is still supporting the ps2 actively. Not only for the more expensive versions of the ps3, but also for the ps2's base system. People that buy the base system, are hardly going to be interested in playing ps2 games, if they were.. they would just buy a ps2. for 149.99 or is it 99.99 now?

I agree. Its just the 360 owners trying to build another anti-sony argument.

The too expensive one is going away slowly, now its becoming the backwards compatibility argument.

BC is important to me, I won't be ready to buy a PS3 until the BC-enabled model is as cheap or cheaper than the new 40gb model is supposed to be.

It's just beacuse they absolutely have no reason whatsoever to remove the software BC. That won't make the damn thing cheaper.

You aren't the target demographic. They are selling things to people that can afford the system.

They want to push the more expensive version Arsuz. This is why they removed BC from the 40 gig unit. Its sales.

Yeah, thats not a point I feel is defensible in any way. It was really stupid on their part IMO. Still, the PS3 at least has an option which gives great backwards the compatability. The Xbox 360 has one that gives none and two that only have about 1/3 backwards compatability.

P.S. They probably removed the GS from the 40GB PS3, even the software backwards compatability had some hardware that it used, so no..they aren't doing it to push the more expensive version.

Like i alredy have said a price drop is a good thing but i remember when everyone was bashing the 360 for its limited backwards compability and now the most accesible to most people ps3 unit has no backwards compability, now that is funny. Also backwards compability is a big deal to alot of people if i would buy a ps3 it would be the 40 gig model but my ps2 broke and i have a big collection of ps2 games so i won't be able to play them, sony should think about this.

Uh. Ok. I'm not going to fault a company for wanting to make $. Its the same reason we have "super size." Or different levels of trim for vehicles, ipods, everything.

If a person really wants the BC. They will buy the more expensive version. Just like people who want the features of the elite 360 system.

You've got to be kidding me. The ps2 is the price of two games. I am glad there are so many die hard PS2 Fans within the 360 community though. Its really shocking.

I have bought 3 ps2 all died from the stupid DRE, my 360 got RROD but i managed to fix it. I'm thinking of buying a ps3 when mgs4 and some more games come out but im sure as hell not giving more money for a ps2 just to have it break again. Also i tought that sony also had a sofware emulator why won't they include it in this version, i guess that they want to promote their more expensive model more.

what's with the myth that the software emulation uses the GS? The chip in the hardware emulation PS3 is the same as that used in the PS2 slim in that both chips were combined into one. In the european release this chip was removed and unless Sony was prepared to negate this cost cutting proceedure by investing in making GS chips solely for the PS3, there are no remnants of the PS2 hardware in the PS3. The whole 'no bc' thing has me completely puzzled.

Let me get this straight, you managed to fix the RRoD but found yourself unable to find the DRE? Uhmm...okay. Also the software emulation still uses the GS, its idiotic to take out all the PS2 backwards comp, but try not to make this into something it isn't.

Im not trying to make anything becouse something like no bc is a issue for people that don't have a ps2 and i can't belive people are taking this crap becouse sony can do bc on this model but they just don't want to. On the ps2 issue about dre i tried repositioning the laser on my last ps2 also i tried cleaning it, i managed to fix it for some time but it broke again. I fixed my 360 using the 8 penny fix and its been working since i fixed it atleast for now that is.

If the EE+GS was in fact two chips on a single piece of silicon and it wasn't all contained within the same housing they would save a ton of money by just removing one. BTW, SCEE RESPOND TO BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY QUESTIONS

"The original PS3 used the Emotion Engine/Graphics Synthesiser to emulate PS2 titles. With the latest European specification we have removed the Emotion Engine, retaining the graphics chip. This has an impact on the number of PS2 titles that will be backwards compatible."

No, the problem is that removing BC isn't saving Sony any money, so it's a stupid decision.

Yeah, it is a joke. I ponied up the dough for a 60gb model to get that BC function. Since my PS2 died, I wouldn't consider a different model.

Amen brother... Amen... When the 360 launched cows were out in full force bashing the 360 because of it's "limited BC", and now all of a sudden it's O.K for the PS3 not to be BC... AT ALL... :| Talk about Hypocrites...

Anyway, I think it's a moot point (Just like I said with the 360 cows), You buy a next gen system to play next gen games... It's always a plus to have these features but not a requirement.. I've played NG and Halo 2 on my 360 since early 2k6 and THAT'S IT..

Actually BC is a huge issue for me at least. I didn't have a PS2 last gen and won't pay $100 for it this gen. I want to play GoW, FF, MGS and all the great other PS2 games. Quite simply, the PS3 is missing a feature that is worth $100. That's huge for me.

A $400 over priced dust magnet. Yeah that was a smart move by Sony...

Now you can't play PS2 games while you wait for PS3 games.

So glad I got the 60GB version. They should have just kept the 20GB model on the market...

Why not make it an automatic inclusion? 100 million+ users wont hurt anything. Only help.

Your arguement about buying a seperate system is valid, but why would people do this? Seems to me the majority of PS3 owners already own a PS2. This also goes againstSony's grand future prophecy of one multimedia center.

Xbox 360 Core- no b/c

PS3 core- no b/c

Xbox 360 premium/elite- limitedcompatibility

PS3 (europe and 80GB)- limited compatibility

Granted that the cows who went on and on about how great b/c was and how it was necessary don't exactly help, but im really not seeing the problem here. You have a choice which one you want, and its not like its £200 more expensive for the higher model, its £50, and for that you get a bigger hard drive, card readers, two extra USB ports and two games. The 40GB is a good deal, but whats really being overlooked is how amazing the 60GB dealis right now.
