Why is it that everytime a awsome new game comes out.... somehow a old school game is way better.... like for example.... you guys say ocarina of time is the best game ever..... well.... It may have ben for its time... might still be fun today.... but dosent it feel a little dated.... I mean comon wind waker was so much more fun.... and another one is people compare unreal tournament 1998 to todays games.... ya I Know it was good ( i have it ) But comon its dated.... are people just saying that because at that time period it was awsome......Magical_Donuts
Does it feel dated? No, it doesn't. I don't see how an amazing and fun game can ever be "dated" unless you mean because of the graphics which is a very shallow point. As far as I'm concerned, the best Zelda and Mario games were the 2d versions. I can easily play Mario 3, Mario World and Link to the Past over and over and over (and I have). While I still like the newer games to varying degree (Sunshine blew, Wind waker was good), they still don't hold a candle to the 2d original in terms of fun and gameplay.
HOwever, I do agree with your general point. I agree that when people continuously compare every Zeldato Ocarina, or every FF to FF7, or every modern game to Gears, it is done so out of nostalgia, ignorance and group-think. People often build games up in their mind to the point of legend, completely apart from reality. As you say, a game is grat for the time, but doesn't always hold up in reality...but in their minds those games will always be legendary and unbeatable, even though that is false. This is what happens when casuals control the market. The one casual game that gets them into the series is worshiped while everythign else is panned. It's because casual don't care about a series or even a type of game so much as the NAME of the game. It's cool to talkabout FF7, and it was most likely their first (possibly only) RPG...so it becomes legendary. Gears has amazing graphics, but now no matter how many great looking games come out, people will always and forever say Gears is the best looking.
