I have a dream that one day, all systems will be one, great system. I dream that there will not be 3 factions vying for supremecy over the other, but instead one system with the capabilities of all three. I have a dream that one day, all this "system wars" BS will be ended with this "messiah of video games"

Then you woke up and realized that each of the 3 console makers are out for their own good and in no way would ever team up with one another and make a super console. Reality bites. :(

It would have to work more like VHS or DVD, where a standard is reached, and any company is free to make their own form of the hardware with features above and beyond the minimum standards, sort of like video players are today. In this sense, the market would be even more free than today. Instead of 3 companies you would have dozens to chose from, just like TVs and DVD players and surround systems, etc. Licensing should also be cheaper, so theoretically the games could get cheaper (although we know they wouldn't).

I was thinking about that the other day, if some day they combine to make an epic console, it would just be AMAZING..

yep, that pretty much sums it up.

Why don't buy all of them? It will be like 250+300+400 = 950$, average working US guy could buy it from one monthly salary.

PC is only 1 platform. We don't see bad games on it do we? Lets take the MMO and RTS genre for example. Belongs exclusively to the PC platform.

EA = potential monopoly (NFS allready being milked etc etc)

The danger of a monopoly lies not in the system creators. Its only a pain for the consumer to have to buy all 3 consoles. And a PC gaming on top of that. And I didn't even mention handhelds.

The Movie Industry has PLENTY of competition. Competition does not lie in the system manufacturer.

I personally think it could potentially work well. I might be wrong though...

As it's already been pointed out, a monopoly would create a crushing environment for the consumer with total price control. If there wasn't an X360 or Wii, PS3 would still be $600 today.

And there's another downside I'm surprised nobody else mentioned. Quality of games. Competition brings about innovation. The need for each company to one-up their rivals for the sole motivation of making sure your dollar goes to them and not the other guy. And when each company is breaking their backs to be better than the rivals to earn your favor, we all win with a higher selection of quality titles to choose from.

This situation is not a monopoly. This is a single unified platform much like the blu ray disks or VHS back in the day.

And seeing we are already in an ologopoly it really wouldn't matter much.

of course there is a lot of downside to my dream( anybody up for a game of Monopoly?)......but it is still my DREAM

Now, if you're proposing that Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft got drunk one night and decided to make one big system for the next generation, then you might be on to something. Nintendo would vouch for a low price and fun "pick-up-and-go" games while Sony would bring the hardware, while Microsoft brought the money. Then Sontindendosoft would be born. Of course, that would never happen.SuperNecro
