I have come to a conclusion that HD and HDTVs are Overhyped to death.

Having HD doesnt make anything more fun or more enjoyable. Before last year, before the February deadline for HD signals for TVs, I heard how great HD makes things better, including games. I always wanted an upgrade from my 13" Sharp alarm clock tv :P and my mother wanted one for the living room. So last black Friday I purchased a SONY Bravia 42" 1080p for 450 and change.

I get home, set it up to be amazed by the clarity and sound, but after a couple of months it became the norm. I was no longer amazed. Eager to connect my 360 to an HDTV, the picture was great but not outstanding as many on gaming forums hype HD gaming to be. I actually spend more time watching on my 13" Sharp TV, then on my Bravia.

Bottomline is, HD does not make things more enjoyable. Sure its clearer, but big deal. Just because the Wii isnt HD does not mean you cant enjoy it, same for TV programs, movies, etc. HD is overhyped.

It doesn't make it more fun or enjoyable, I agree with that. What I don't understand though, some people buy HDTV's to try to get their console multiplats to look as good as they can, but if you want the games to look as good as they can, why not get them for the PC instead? :P

EDIT: Although some games need it though. (Dead Rising)

You're right, HD doesn't make anything more fun, enjoyable, etc. In the right hands however, it makes everything so much prettier :D

It's not just about the resolution. HDTVs display vastly superior colour to thier SD cousins. Colour is still one of the most import parts of displaying an image.

The idea that HD is the end all be all is silly. Its just an increase in resolution. Picture quality, colour, sharpness, reduced jaggies etc all improve greatly but its not like if you don't game HD you're missing out. Its ultimately an image, a clearer one but an image none the less. I'm sure people will disagree with me on this though. Not saying I think HD is useless, just that its benefits and worth are over exagerated.

Yeah... one thing that kinda irritates me about most PS3 games is that most text is designed to be read in HD, making it a pain to read some things, or see some symbols, in SD... the character bios in Valkyrie Chronicles, for example...

btw, that February deadline was just for switching broadcasts to digital, as opposed to analog... it had nothing to do with HD...

Partially incorrect.

In theory they do, but most people don't calibrate their sets, so in the end the colors end up being just as bad.

I agree, largely. But the reason why the 360 and ps3 have mcuh better graphics than the wii isn't because of the resolution, it's you know, the actual stuff being rendered.

It's not the be all end all of gaming and entertainment. But there is something about sharp colors and lines, greater resolution and for me, a larger screen. I prefer it over my SDTV by far.

HD and big screens go hand in hand.

Play some SD content on anything bigger than a 32"

I played a Wii on a 60".....it looked like garbage.

I stopped reading about the time, you said there was some sort of deadline for tv signals to be HD, when you said that i automatically knew, that you knew next to nothing about HD.

Heres a little info, The TV digital switch had nothing to do with High definition, Analog can send an HD signal, Albeit harder then a digital one can, the digital switch was just that, a switch to digital broadcasting which is not inherently HD, No channel had to change to HD if they did then every single SD tv would become useless because a native HD broadcast wouldn't play on SD tvs.

P.S: oh and the Feburary Digital switch failed, It was pushed back to June.

HD is overhyped no doubt, but games like Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts are unplayable without one imo. It's soooooooooooo hard to read the text.

But srsly console owners that claim HD as ownage are pretty lame. It's like they don't realize the PC has been doing it for much longer than consoles.

I don't mean to sound condescending, but are you sure you set it up right? The difference between SD and HD on my two TVs (a 56" Samsung DLP 720p/1080i and a 26" Samsung LCD 1080p) is still mind-boggling, and I've had the DLP since 2003 or 2004 (can't remember which).

I personally drive two extra miles to sit in a nice movie theater vs. the one right down the street because the screen is bigger and the sound is better. The movie isn't any different, but better picture and sound just adds to the experience. The same can be said for gaming.

As a PC gamer i have to disagree with you, HD is very important.

Playing a blurry mess is not fun.

When youve been playing games in HD res for over 15 years its hard to put up with SD.

Changing to HD really was a smart move, even though you notice alot of jaggies now :(

HD is over hyped in that they have convinced people that it is more than just resolution.

When a console gamer talks about HD they are not referring to just 720p or 1080p, they have summarized the graphics of this generation as a whole as being HD. In reality HD is anything running at 720p, but PS3/360 users would argue against Wii games being HD even if they were running at 1080p.

They have added graphical expectations to what is supposed to be a simplistic and consumer friendly way of referring to these resolutions.

HD is overhyped.

yeah i hate that fact its pretty much a must that you keep a small sdtv around for the older systems, ps1, ps2, genesis...etc all look total crap on high end hdtvs. Ps1 games look like total crap on my 32 inch 1080p lcd, ps2 games better but still not up to par what it was on an good ol'sd tv. Thats one problem with most HDTV's they dont strive to perfect an SD picture which is a must in the end cause it can natively do hdtv all ready doing SD is the problem, alot of tv broadcasts look like total **** on my tv.

sounds like Microsoft PR now that they dont do HD gaming anymore.

what a coincidence!

sexxxyboy
thats awesome you show in one fell swoop your total lack of knowledge of system wars users, and your total lack of knowledge that Ps3 doesn't have much of a standard either, with quite a few of its games being sub hd, or being fake 1080p..the ps3 is in the same boat as the 360 is.

Na, more in the living room, the game console is hooked up to the HDTV, I dont really game as much as I use to . Just usually tune into what is on TV most of the time and it usually on my SD tv. I dont mind HD, yes its clearer but not a big deal.

I disagree-- HD is such an awesome experience. Sure, it's not 100% necessary but it totally offers a fuller experience. The upgrade is huge-- before when I used to play K2, I could barely make out the HUD, but in HD the HUD's resolution is excellent as well as all my games looking incredibly sharp. I love HD.

Well, I played and enjoyed my 360 a lot more once I got an HDTV. I'm sorry your expectations weren't met, but don't pretend that your experience defines everyone's.
