1. Well I'd be afraid what paths they'd take by making them look like Billy Joe. It's simple, they are visually appealing and provide a sense of style and or artistic direction with it's name. The word "Fantasy" isn't laid upon the franchise because there are Moogles alone. Not all fantasy titles go for overly ambigous look but it's keeping up with a tale that is told in fantasy-like aspects.
2. A tale that stays alive for eternity. I've always seen the Final Fantasy titles as tales, if anything. They all draw on their own take of that age old story.
3. Well, there were gunblades in FFVIII. Guns and blades, you know? No, really. Once again, this is a fantasy story. There are different weapons provided in many of the games. Yet like someone said, most JRPGs have the main protaganist using a sword. There is something elegant and heroic about using a sword in the a fantasy universe. It portrays that image the main hero of the story strives on.
4. The Fanfare is just tradition. It's like taking out "It's me, Mario" from Mario.
Final Fantasy and many JRPGs may not be original in their game franchises yet that's what their genre usually portays itself to be. There have been manyexceptions to this statement but for the Final Fantasy to take a different stroke, it'd be losing it's fanbase so that risk not an option, I believe. What do I think? I think it's Final Fantasy. It's the same story base and the same aspects that most of the Final Fantasys have been. Though it is more of the "same", I know what to expect. If I wanted something new and refreshing, I'd find another game made by different developers. It's as easy as that.
