actually not to much of a fan of the series, kind of think kratos is overhyped, i do like the puzzles in the game though. especially the messed up ones, like when that guy is in the cage and you throw him into the flames. SICK. good series in terms of gameplay, the story just seems a little bad to me, but hey thats just me. I played a little of 2, if u liked 1 in terms of gameplay and story, u will absolutely love god of war 2.

Part 2 had a horrible ending, just like halo 2.  Both of their endings go with a finish the fight thing that just upsets me.  It builds you up so much, then says TO BE CONTINUED.  Amazing game...but the ending:evil:

It's a great game, gotta love the cinematic quality to the presentation. The story is engrossing, gameplay is solid and accessible to beginners and people looking for a challenge. You can't just play through it once, gotta have a crack at every difficulty level.

Either way, both God of War and God of War II we're exceptional titles. I can't wait until God of War: Blades of Olympus and God of War III for the PS3.

Sorry but have to agree.

Props to David Jaffe for figuring out how to make the platform genre popular again.  The same people who would never touch a game like Jak and Daxter or Mario gush over GOW eventhough it has identical gameplay elements.

Gameplay is the same, get rid of kid friendly character and bright colors, add instead gore, blood and boobs and all of a sudden people love it.

God of War is more of an action game like Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden than a platformer.

What in the heck?  God of War doesn't play much like Jak and Daxter or Mario at all.  It's a third-person game, and you somtimes climb walls , and you can jump, but there's little else to justify that comparison.  Also, the gore and nudity were certainly nice, but the game also had an extremely engaging storyline and protagonist, great voice acting and dialogue, and spectacular music.  Pretty nice graphics too.  People differ on the quality of the gameplay itself--I think that is the series' weak spot--but I still bought the sequel.  Yes, it is definitely better than the original.

Even though I enjoyed God of War II, and I am aware of what genre it is, I was a little upset with how linear the game felt. I'm used to there being side quests that can get me extra items, armor, and cash that I can choose to take part in or not.

You might just have described GTA: San Andreas; or Metroid: Prime; or The Warriors; or Metal Gear Solid 3; or Ninja Gaiden.  That's because all those games contain the same elements you just described.  Are you saying all those games are the same as Jak and Daxter games, or Mario games?

As someone who plays alot of platformers, GOW definately feels like one.

I don't know why you guys are so defensive about it, like you feel it is a genre only for the kiddies.

Tomb Raider is also a platformer.

Half Life 2 is obviously FPS.

It is just in the presentation, I am not the only one who sees it, try doing a google search for God of War 2 platformer.

Several reviews mention the platform elements.

GOW2 is even more amazing you almost fight more bosses than actual enemies lol. and anyone who hates on the game just came in expecting zelda or something, they just wanted kratos to be able to play a flute or drive a warthog. for what the game is a pure action game it is just amazing and it takes actual skill in the higher difficulties. i started on hard and kept getting owned on one boss and im really good at DMC3, you cnat compare them(they are similar but are going for different goals) you can compare DMC and ninja gaiden but GOW actually has a decent story while throwing in hardcore action with hardcore enemies and mythology.

I enjoy platformers too, psychonauts was one of my favorite games of last generation. God of War is a very typical hack and slash game, it plays a lot more like Ninja Gaiden than it does Jack and Daxter.

plenty of game have platform elements, that dont make it a platformer. its an action game pure and simple, if you gave a gamer a mario game and this game you honestly think they will see them as similar or in the same genre ?

But see, when I think of Hack and Slash, I think of Dynasty Warriors or Ninty Nine Nights.  If you are truly a platform player, can you not see the resemblances in gameplay??????  At least with GOW1, I have not played or seen the 2nd one.

No I did not expect Zelda, I expected an action game on par with Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry. What I got was a very shallow, button masher friendly, combat system, dumb enemy AI, and an 8 hour long quest.

I suppose action adventure would be the better term to describe it. God of War has platforming elments, of course, but they're not the main focus of the game. The game's focus is combat.

Do you not see the error in your thinking?  The down deep gameplay elements are the same.  It's like saying Mario Kart is not a racer because it looks different.  It is still a racing game.

There was combat, but the main portions of the game were jumping and solving puzzles. Almost all games have platformer elments, they're pretty much video game cliche's

Let me just ask you this and please actually think about the question and answer honestly.

If Kratos was cute and cuddley, he still fought the bad guys but there was no blood, and there were no topless women in the game.  If they replaced the enviroment of the game with a rainbow colored one, would you still think of the game the same way and how would you honestly classify it.

actually, i liked gow1 better than 2...storywise. i mean, the story in gow 2 was just okay, whereas the storyline and ending for gow1 was AWESOMENESS! i absolutly HATED the end of gow2, it just seemed rushed and plain to me. gameplay wise gow2 kicks gow1's butt! but then again gow1 had more challenging and thinking puzzles. but then again gow2 has more bosses and more moves and weapons. needless to say i couldn't pick which one i like more, but both are GREAT GAMES

I enjoy platformers too, psychonauts was one of my favorite games of last generation. God of War is a very typical hack and slash game, it plays a lot more like Ninja Gaiden than it does Jack and Daxter.

But see, when I think of Hack and Slash, I think of Dynasty Warriors or Ninty Nine Nights. If you are truly a platform player, can you not see the resemblances in gameplay?????? At least with GOW1, I have not played or seen the 2nd one.

I suppose action adventure would be the better term to describe it. God of War has platforming elments, of course, but they're not the main focus of the game. The game's focus is combat.

Go back to even the first Super Mario Bros, could you not say one of the main focuses was combat??  How many mushrooms and turtles  and flying beetles did you have to jump on to get to your goal?????

wow just wow, and you said i have the error in my thinking ? im just gonna slowly leave this thread now...

Like I said, I'm basing this on experience with the first game, not the second.  I'm done arguing about  it for the night.  Maybe i made you think more about it?  You did for me.  Good arguments all around.  Thanks for a great debate!

Leave it to you to pull me back in, see as I said the core gameplay element remains the same.  You see "combat" as totally something different  because in one it is clean and your just jumping on the heads of the enemys in another there is blood and gore and your chopping them up with knives.  The core gameplay is the same (kill your enemys) just the presentation is different.  It is the same as my previous example of Mario Kart still being a racing game.

If you have a problem with that please EXPRESS it.  Let your voice be heard.  Tell me WHY and HOW I'm wrong.  Don't just say I'm wrong with nothing to back it up.  If you give a good argument I will respect it.

I can sum it up in six words: Devil May Cry with training wheels.

actually, i liked gow1 better than 2...storywise. i mean, the story in gow 2 was just okay, whereas the storyline and ending for gow1 was AWESOMENESS! i absolutly HATED the end of gow2, it just seemed rushed and plain to me. gameplay wise gow2 kicks gow1's butt! but then again gow1 had more challenging and thinking puzzles. but then again gow2 has more bosses and more moves and weapons. needless to say i couldn't pick which one i like more, but both are GREAT GAMESRacoonusDoodus

I completely agree on the story, wich many disagree on that. I mean we all know that GoW took its road mostly based from mythology, but it wasn't really the end of GoW2 that made me feel like that about the game, but the fact that imo I think that the story of GoW1 had more original content to it.

Many people regard the story of GoW2 as being a masterpiece and when I played it, it felt like 95% of what I saw was mostly a carbon copy of storys from ancient mythology, wich imo was something that GoW1 did not follow to the extreme. Not to mention that the very little content that was not a carbon copy imo failed to deliver in many levels.

Its not like I enjoyed the story of the second in lore, but what I did enjoy in it was what actually happened in the game and its connection to the universe.

Spoilers:

Like a spartan being the one who destroyed the Colussos of rhodes(wich in history is supposed to be destroyed by an earthquake), or you killing Prometheus, or Perseus, Theseus, Euryale. Stealing the wings of Icarus  , fighting agains't the Sisters of fate, meeting up with Atlas the Titan etc etc etc. No other game gives you the chance of doing this and thats one of the reasons of why I liked it in that regard.
