If you were to go to outter space, I think that most planets would be like that.Well. It is not true that there is absolutely nothing in most of them, but they are pathetically almost empty.
Its pretty sad they wasted all that space for some really unimportant stuff the game has the offer.

Lemmings got triple-owned by Mass Effect.

:P
hhahaha. wastelands.
now tell me the reason why the game is having technical problems

Poor optimization? I don't know. The only time I noticed lots of framerate issues was in that one snowy planet where it was almost impossible, and when I fought those weird crab-like sorta creatures in Noveria.

So the excuse is that it's supposed to be "realistic?" -.-

Oh I'm sorry, was this a game based on a real galaxy? For godsake we couldn't even visit the Turian planet or whatever. There is no substance in this game.

So? Would you make a shooter set in the sahara desert with no features other than an occasional camel?
Environments in games should never be empty. Unless it's part of the designer's artistic vision, like in Shadow of the Colossus.
the way you people talk about it you expect a city the size of new york on every single planet in the milky way, the point is to explore these planets, find rare metals, find old war memoribilia, downed spacecrafts, mecernary camps, enemies etc.Big_player
Clearly that's boring and nobody would want to do that.
[QUOTE="Legendaryscmt"]I'd rather play for 10 hours on barren planets than play 4 hours as a female Kratos in populated environments.Ilived
What game are you referring to, I can't understand.
Heavenly sword.....There needs to be more towns like in KOTOR. The Citadel and the sad excuse for a town that is Noveria ain't cuttin it.VandalvideoExactly what I was thinking. I would have gladly waitied another year if they added cities on all planets and polished the game more.

Heavenly sword.....What was the point of mentioning that game? It's not like its an rpg...
lly, extra disk space IS NEEDED.
Let's take a look here. Remember Oblivion? The dungeons? The same dungeons, same trees, same everything basically? You know how there would be like 3 people in a town at once barely being able to do anything? How buildings all looked alike?
And now Mass Effect. Lots of baren planets, and planets don't have much form of life. If all planets were completely different, had many different forms of life, and different architecutre, I guarantee the game would be about 15GBs minimum.
Yeah, they had some space left. It's because they didn't want to make one planet extremely diverse and the others left baren because the DVD space has run out. But whatever lemmings, its ok!!!!
Omg, you don't like it, the game must lack in substance for all of us. I love people who try to force their opinions on others.:?BioShockOwnz
You kidding? I LOVE THIS GAME! You haven't seen me defending it in threads that bash it? I'm just pointing out that this could have been the best game ever if it had many races and their home planets to go in and many big cities etc.

Have you played PS3 games? Do you know how linear and short the majority of them are? Blu-ray may be a positive down the line, but it's yet to prove itself.
I agree the planets are pretty much empty in terms of detail and what not. There are some occassions where life does exist (other than enemies), but it's so few and far between it's hardly worth mentioning. I think I really got this awe inspiring feeling when I came up over mountains and hills and saw some of the cool sky setting more than anything I found on land itself.
There is also a issue of reuse. I travel light years and yet the blue prints for these places are like carbon copies.
Love the game but I could nit pick a lot about it.
[QUOTE="-Serpahim-"]So is Mass Effect shadow of the colossus with a story minus the colossi?Sir-Marwin105No.
Im sorry i wanst more specific with my question, and this is an honest question because im on the fence about buying this game since i have never liked Bioware games. I know that there are alot of NPCs with alot of enemies, but my question is in these "wasteland" areas, does mass effect feel as barren as SotC? This is ok, if the scenery makes up for it such as in SotC (which happens to be one of my favorite games :) )
It's not nitpicking they do look the same, outside and inside.I agree the planets are pretty much empty in terms of detail and what not. POPULATING THE PLANETS WITH MODELS AND GEOMTETRY WOULD HAVE MINIMAL EFFECT ON GAMESPACE.
Its amazing how poeple that dont know things presume. Putting models already in your game in another level from the one there already in is simple and easy. The actual level data itself is quite small, its the textures and such that take up space. Since those textures and models are already on the disk it would have been pretty painless. For whatever reason Bioware wanted them barren.
As for the argument theyd all "look the same", thats stretching it a bit, cause theres lots of textures and plenty of ways to mix them up, but yes, theyd all look a little similiar. Ofcourse, NO game offers that kind of diversity right now, so blaming it on DVD is pretty childish.

I agree, it's one of the best games to come out in years but still doesn't match KOTOR in my books. It's flawed and Bioware needs to know this so they can inprove on the second game. I swear the only 3 buildings on any planet was the T-junction base, the mine, and the two floored base. I also agree on the cities, KOTOR had IIRC 5 unique cities, which each had their own sidequests and fun ones at that (like the murder trial) .lly, extra disk space IS NEEDED.

Yea, because the 360 and ps3 have huge amounts of ram that can fit thousands of different tree models

I own a Playstation 3. Length has nothing to do with it. It's the vastness of the game itself. I know Lair was a huge flop (Heck I still like it), but imagine games LIKE that. That game couldn't have fit on a standard DVD. No way.
Same with Heavenly Sword. Remember the one scene where you are protecting the Heavenly Sword and there are TONS of enemies actually moving in the background? Yeah, try that with a DVD. It's not necessary, but it's cool.
Plus the entire game throughout shows different architecture. Level design is amazing, it really is.
Lots of games are starting to show the need for BD.

There is reuse in that area too, since there is more than one planet with comets falling.
However, I did like that, plus I enjoyed Luna (the moon), and one of the plents which was a moon to a gas giant. It was really close to it's respective start and you could see the stars surface shifting.

I notice reuse as well. However, I don't have a gripe with the planets. Most of the ones you travel to are nigh inhabitible anyway. They make up for it with locations like Noveria and Virion (Can't remember the spelling. It's the tropical planet with tons of water and thunderstorms. You know, the nuke level.) though.
Really, there's just so much to do, and the complaints are minimal. It's my favorite game this year by far.
the game flopped in sales? link please...thats hilarious if true...it was suppose to be microsoft's last big game before 08Lemmings got triple-owned by Mass Effect.

because every planet in the universe has highly evoled society and isn't just wastelands.....
i mean in our galaxy alone......only a few planets are landable......and the ones that are, they are just barren wastelands.
