I forgot how much I hate Steam. I live on a boat, so my laptop cannot get internet at the moment and Steam won't start in offline mode for no reason at all. Its stupid that I paid $50 bucks for a offline game, yet I can't play it w/o an internet connection.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this thread but I completely agree with you. It is BS that HL2 and Portal require an internet connection.

uh, so I'm guessing you are posting from a PC that has internet connection but cant run it well? and, yeah, I cant start steam in offline mode either, which kinda sucks but doesnt really affect me personally.

well, no offense, but your situation is hardly typical. If you have a connection that can download HL2 then most likely it will be always on. Still, I feel bad for you.

Most people live on land in houses. Don't expect Steam to switch their marketing plan to the hand-full of people living on boats. :|

Again, games are better on 360.

Look at the crap called PS3, has no AAA game in a full year.
PC is just as bad. The best version is always on 360 at the end.

depends on how good your PC is and whether you get glitches (which are pretty much random) but in general, I agree.

Don't get me wrong, The PC version is better in every concievable way. The game is good, Its just that Steam has too many problems, with not even a hint on how to fix them.

i forgot that valve games have a habit of not working for me and my 8800gtx at first. all of the OB games just crash right after they load. i'm going to have to wait weeks for a fix probably. and yes i have tried all the fixes i could find searching through forums. i should have just gotten the 360 version, but it will be better on pc in the end.

both my network adapters are disabled. I click the option, "start in Offline mode" and it responds:

" This operation cannot be completed when Steam is in offline mode."

Its stupid, I was just playing with steam online like yesterday...

whats the point of this thread? anyways guys i have a question...do you think console max online players are being kept at 16 for some reason? i mean yesterday i was playing a 19 player LAGLESS TF2 game on 360 even though the game is set at 16 players...heck one day it went as far as 21 players....im not the only though, many other people have experienced this as well....so i think if Valve wanted they could easily have made 360 version set on 24 players....i dont care though coz even 16 players is a riot...so why are the still keeping the game at 16 when the the game can g up to 21 players without any problems?

Yeah, modding a Xbox360 is much better since they don't try too protect it like valve does with steam games.

Hurray for piracy!

Im 100% sure its possible to play them offline. I dont know whether its navigating to the folder and clicking the .exe yourself (try it) or whether you need to change some setting, but i know its possible.

Ah I cant be bothered searching forums.

All I know is that there is a 16 player limit in the game, and most of the lag has been fixed, but there are still lag issues.

Yeh Steam can be annoying at times I know what you mean.

But seriously if anyone actually thinks Half-Life is played better on a console I pity him.

I blame pirates but as a paying consumer I don't enjoy the lengths some developer go to protect their product. Even something as simple as having to put in the DVD to play when there is no real reason for me to need to do this annoys me. Not all developers do it though, Hearts of Iron 2 and Spaceforce are two I played recently memory that didn't inconvenience me (the paying customer) because some people don't want to support the industry and pirate games.

[QUOTE="Blue-Sky"]I forgot how much I hate Steam. I live on a boat, so my laptop cannot get internet at the moment and Steam won't start in offline mode for no reason at all. Its stupid that I paid $50 bucks for a offline game, yet I can't play it w/o an internet connection.Velric

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this thread but I completely agree with you. It is BS that HL2 and Portal require an internet connection.

No they don't. I've played them both offline many times. There's no real reason you shouldn't be able to boot up Steam in offline mode, and every game in offline mode works (except TF2, obviously). The only time you have to be online is when you first boot the game up, so it can validate it. After that, you should be able to play it anytime, offline or on. What kind of error is it giving?
