Since this fall will be abig gaming season and the ps3 will be celebrating its first year (anniversary). All the good games will come out then such as

  • Lair
  • Heavenly Sword
  • Uncharted: Drakes Fortune
  • Little Big Planet
  • GTA IV  *PS3/360 Exclusive*
  • Ninja Gaiden Sigma
  • Ratchet & Clank: TOD
  • Warhawk
  • Folklore
  • Sing Star
  • Socom Confrontation
  • HOME (PSN)
  • Firmware 2.0
  • Pain (PSN)
  • High Velocity Bowling (PSN)
  • Eye of Judgement
  • PS EYE

Also some great multiplat games will widen the ps3 library with the help of those exclusives. The ps3s Sales will increase in that period and in the ps3s anniversary Sony should lower the price and i guess it would do that because of these reasons :

-Fall sales will be high due to releases of great games a price drop then will increase the demand for ps3s and sales will go higher also due to ps3 first year and 360s price is going down so sony should do something about it and i think they will.

-65nm Cell chip will be out by then and it will reduce ps3 cost

-Blu-ray player production cost will be lower. (this happens because technology advances in 1 year and as all new player when they first launch they are very expensive one year later the production costs are lower and price is reduced)

-Emotion Engine chip will be removed so again the ps3's cost will be reduced.

Overall this can help sony to reduce the price by 50-100$ and christmas will be a very good period for a price drop.

And If sony releases the White/Silver ps3s it will also give consumers a choice and sales would increase.

Your thoughts ? Ideas ?

I also predict that Sony will drop the price of the Playstation 3 this year. Hopefully to £349.99 in the UK, and $475 premium in the states

I'd have to agree. Sadly, I'll bet here in Australia it will have only dropped $100 AUD, leaving us with a price that would not entice who doesn't already have one... ('cause they bought it for $1000, less than my latest gaming PC setup lolol)

They cannot do a price drop. Its not as simple as you people think,  a price drop costs them alot of money it takes a year or two for that to happen. Look at the PSP, people were screamin for a price drop and the first one didn't happen for  a year and then another year after that.

Just because their production cost is dropping, it doesn't mean they are going to drop the cost for the consumer. They are losing $200 on every PS3 and with the things mentioned above they will begin manufacturing them at closer to cost.

Don't expect a price drop until the Holiday season 2008

They can. They will make the money back in the long run from Bluray as the primary media format for the next 15-odd years.

If so, Sony is going to lose even more money.

And why drop the price when big titles start coming out?

The difference is .... the PSP had decent worldwide sales numbers despite its high price. The ps3 sales have totally dried up and developers , publishers , game critics , financial analysts , and fans are not happy about the high price. I think they will fold under the pressure.

They probably can't afford a price drop, their game division lost 2B last year.

i think its logical to say after reduced costs they should consider a price drop since it is the main and most effective way for consumers to buy the ps3. This is mainly for casuals since they form 80% of the gaming industry. So 500$ is good for the competition and plus if sales are quite high we will see more exclusives and devs will have more faith in the system and will spend money because they know they will earn lots of profit.

Nope, Firmware 2.0 has lots of features and it will help fixing PS3s image in the media. I am sure you heard about background downloading threads and articles when the ps3 was released.

They need to tie a price drop with a big release.

If they screw up the Playstation 3 then they risk Bluray as a media format, which puts the entire company into a bit of a gamble.

First of all we don't know if BD will win and I don't care which wins, I really don't and secondly if we look at the trends in movie formats DVD hasn't been the primery media format for more than 4 years. Did you know the first time a DVD outsold a VHS was in 2003?

Sony are gambling there companies future on Bluray. They would most likely survive a defeat, but face a mammoth setback.

The thing sony has to worry about, is that even if they gambled on a price drop (which finanically is not a smart move for at least 2008). Microsoft at any point could drop their price more into the mass market prices...and with the games they got coming this year...could be a big blow unless they do something.

Example, after Halo 3 releases..if MS price dropped in november right before the holidays....lord all mighty. That would be a double peak for them.

Lilac_Benjie

i kind of agree with you there even tho ps3 is not the only deciding factor for Blu-ray. But a price drop with some great games and some new features and close to christmas will blow sales and that will change every developers mind and wont port games but actualy utilize the power of the ps3.

And in 2008 more system sellers will just get better MGS4, FF13, FF 13versus and some new ips and exclusives will just increase sales. people wont look at the ps3 as waaa 600!!! damn insane!

Even tho the x360 made a bundle with forza 2 and steering wheel for 700$ thats crazy and this infact will help the ps3 pick up in sales

If Playstation 3 falls into last place this generation, Sony risk loosing the format war. Sony can't afford that. A price drop is necessary.

I don't think $100 is big difference, like I said alot of times the consumers are waiting for big games then they will buy it, they can afford it but they won't cuz there isn't good games yet, think about this, how much did you spent for gaming over the years?, it's really don't matter if there is a price drop or not.

Yeah, in two years. Don't you know how much money Sony is losing per PS3? In order for a price-drop to be effective, they would have had to have MADE money off of the product to counter the amount they would lose from a price drop. Simple economics people.

sony has money.

And they're already losing a good amount of said money already, so why would they want to lose more? Price drops occur in two instances; When the product has sold very well and the producers can afford a price drop to further boost sales. Or, when the product is selling horribly, and the producers have to use a last resort to make their product known to the public by making it cheaper.

I agree. They already have so much money invested in the PS3, and taking a loss at $600. A $100 drop will make it an even bigger loss. I dont think we will see a price drop for at least two years. I think once they knock down the production cost on Blu-ray and cell chips, sony is going will hold out as long as possible. But MS has the ace, if sony drops price, I would expect MS to follow.

I hope one of the these companieslowers their price because the other 2 will follow suit. I personally think Sony will be the first to flinch because they aredead last and actually loosing steam. They need to do something drastic though. Ms and Wii really have no reason to price cut till Sony does. IMO

No, but the premise of this thread is.  They can't afford a price drop yet.  MAYBE this Xmas, but even that is a big maybe.

[QUOTE="jack_russel"][QUOTE="Verge_6"]Yeah, in two years. Don't you know how much money Sony is losing per PS3? In order for a price-drop to be effective, they would have had to have MADE money off of the product to counter the amount they would lose from a price drop. Simple economics people.Verge_6
sony has money.

Microsoft lost like a billion dollars one the xbox. Losing money is nothing these guys. It's like losing $20, you'll live.
