I think Gamespot set the bar too high for AAA games with its rating of Bioshock.

Well I for one think GS dropped the ball and gave a harsh score of 9.0 for Bioshock when we all know it deserved 9.5. This game is the clear front runner right now for GOTY and is currently the # 4 game all time in regards to rating on Gamerankings. I now have a feeling that because of this mess up that GS review system is trying to backpeddel and be especially harsh on the upcoming games that are coming out during the holiday. Does anyone agree with me?

not really.. I love the game, but there is no replay value what so ever... same problem with metroid. You get maybe 30 hours of gameplay from this game. Plus it was easy as hell.. why didnt they just have checkpoint instead of these auto respawns every 2 seconds.

Maybe it was rounded down from 9.2, stop complaining about this, its great and you know it who cares what one site puts as a final judgement, especailly if its Jeff.

 If you think that Bioshock is a FPS, you are sadly mistaken. The thing that Bioshock does worst is how it handles shooting. Very little precision in the aiming system and poor hit detection. It is more of a FP adventure with RPG elements in it. To call it a FPS is just blind.

That being said, I really didn't care much for the game. Probably because it DID lack in the area of shooting and fighting. The security bots just got annoying after the 20th time you ran into one. The hacking system slowed the gameplay to a grinding halt each time you tried to hack something. I just started saying "the hell with it" and just paid the $$$ to avoid having to go through the hacking minigame. The lack of a real penalty for dieing basically was the straw that broke the camel's back. The 9.0 is fine for this game and may be a bit too high.

Bioshock isn't really that good, so I don't think the bar is set too high. Halo 3, Crysis, UT3, CoD4, all have a good chance of making 9.0 or higher.

Bioshock has the bar just right for AAA games, AAA should be a designation for games that are truely special in some way that excels it above other games in the same genre. Boishock did this. AAA ratings should be like gold dust and not handed out to every game that fanboys think deserve it.

Personally, although I enjoyed it, it wasn't a 9.0 game. I gave it an 8.5 as that is about what I feel it deserved. As others have said, it a good game with a few glaring issues in the way of replayability and difficulty.

Every room you enter is different, and every area has it's own story, a very well told story not found in most FPS. Bioshock is like a sandbox FPS, it gives you the tools to experiment with the game in ways most or all FPS do not. I have never seen a world in a video game come to life like Rapture, 99% of all the things in the game blend together so well that you have to wonder how they pulled it off.

To call it just another FPS is to liken it to games like Serious Sam, Doom, Quake, Halo, Call of duty. It is not like those games, Bioshock has something special that is very hard to explain. If you don't see it, fair enough, but to me it's the next Deus Ex, System shock, Half life. One of those games that only comes around once every five years or so.

FPS = First Person Shooter. What do you do in bioshock? You run around in first person, and shoot things, with either a gun, or a plasmid, either way, it's shooting. No matter what you are doing, or how you're doing it, it is still, at it's core, a First Person Shooter.

That isn't to say it doesn't have RPG elements, or puzzle solving or whatever. You can call it what you want. I do not think someone that calls it an FPS is "blind" though. I think you are misjudging what FPS means. You must think that there are more criteria to being an FPS than being in first person, and shooting. there isn't. Metroid is an FPS as well. Both games are definately not the STANDARD FPS, like Halo, UT, or Resistance, but they still fit the "First Person Shooter" requirements.

Also, Gamespot is just rating games as they see them. But I do agree, it seems their "standards" went up remarkably. Which isn't bad, its just we'll see less AAA and more A/AA titles (from ALL consoles). Doesn't really matter though. Just read the review, and get what you can out of that.

EDIT: Note. By my statement, You could label MGS and Warhawk as Third Person Shooters. And that sounds about right. People read too much into these genres. Just because its a shooter doesn't mean it doesn't have sub-catagories/alterior motives. So what if i call MGS a shooter. It is. You have a gun, and you shoot people. It's just with MGS, you're not primarily shooting people. Usually you're either knocking them out, breaking their necks, or avoiding them all together. So MGS is really actually a genre of its own... Warhawk however, is primarily a third person shooter, with flight options.

Anyway.. just thinking out loud. :)

OK, call it what you want. I just felt that "shooting" in the game was secondary and in many cases unnecessary, thus making it more of a FP adventure. Would you call Oblivion a FPS? See, I felt that Bioshock's gameplay was more along the lines of Oblivion than, say, Halo 3.

I agree- the new rating system means its harder to get really high scores- strangehold & Moh:airborne would have got atleast 8.0 under the old system.

Well, I completely understand where you are coming from. and my little ramble about MGS made me think. Whilst your thing about oblivion is void, since Oblivion has minimal "shooting", and most of that is with spells/bows, it is a FPRPG. In Bioshock, you are shooting guns. However, You are also trying to find alternate means of getting what you need. Thus making it far from a "run and gun" adventure.

So lets agree on this, It is a FPS/Tactical Shooter/RPG Hybrid, or FPTRPS First Person Tactical RP Shooter.

Does that work?

Agreed.... I think.

I think my view on the game being/not being a FPS is skewed by the fact that I went through the first 3 levels only using the Mighty Wrench...

Gamepot underrating a certain game will have no impact on future reviews (and yes, I believe it's underrated on this site.) Why anyone would be shocked by the score this site gave the game is beyond me, look at the horrid underrated marks they gave SS2 and the original Deus Ex. This site is notoriously bad for handling games within that genre. But really, who cares?

They underrated TP in my opinion as well (in in the opinion of the vast majority of critics and gamers,) yet that didn't doom all future releases beyond that point.

Just a bump in the road.

I suppose you fully agree with the original Deus Ex review, then?

When the Gamespot score is considered horribly underrated by the VAST majority of credible reviewers and gamers who've played the game chances are something is wrong. It's an opinion in the end, and there's no arguing with taste, but that opinion is considered poor by the vast majority of those who've played it - Gerstmann's opinion is in the tiny minority (as is yours.) Nothing wrong with that necessarily, but it hardly makes it true.
