Sure the wii and the ds have had the appeal for a large variety of people, but I think they send out the wrong message. After studing all their advertisement campain from the start of this gen, I realize that nintendo is fine with the idea of having video games viewed as toys for people.

I think I agree now with the notion that nintendo doesn't want to evolve, or at least they don't want to go out of their own self-imposed philosophy. I understand that it's the way they make money, butI certainly don't want people to view it as such.

Nintendo got the industry running by selling the Nintendo as a toy. That's how Consoles are viewed. The only System that's not a Toy is a PC because it has more uses outside of play (even though, the PC can be used as a Toy too.)

The majority of video games aren't much more than glorified toys. Many of those are developed by Nintendo, but they have also developed many "deep" games as well.

What do you expect, games are toys. Very few "games" manage to break that marginalizing definition and even once they do they don't stack up well against other mediums in terms of maturity or sophisticated intellectual/emotional impact. The medium is developing but it's still in its infancy, one birthed by the aformentioned Nintendo.

Lol then I guess gaming will never be as mainstream as music or movies. A market that won't grow as much as people claim is doing.

It's been said, but it stands repeating. Vidoe games are toys. Toys are for adults and kids. Nintendo has tried to make thier consoles and games appeal to both.

The scope of the industry will never grow beyond "X" to put it into perspective. Since everyone agrees that videogames are toys, then you must know that toys can only go so far...

I think they had the right idea, and even the right implementation of said idea with the DS. With the Wii, they messed up bad, which is why with the 3DS and Wii U, you can see them trying to make amends, especially with them openly courting (and succeeding in securing) large amounts of major third party support that matters (like Monster Hunter 4 for the 3DS and an exclusive Assassin's Creed for the Wii U). I think they are evolving just fine. Just their stubbornness means they took longer than they had to.

Why? Videogames are something you play. To have fun with. It's okay for games to be art and to be a form of story telling, but I don't see how it's wrong that Nintendo or any other company wants to make games about just having fun. Why does that bother you? People watch other people play with toys all the time... It's called sports. Theres no disrespect for it there. Games are for the most part just a hobby. Just like watching movies. You're taking it too seriously.

Your argument makes no sense. Gaming, especially in this generation, has made strides in all demographics. Just because games are something you play with doesn't mean it's not main stream. Just look at sports.

It's insecurity. Nerds are, by definition, very insecure. That's why they don't read comics; they read "graphic novels." They don't play video games, they verbalize the noun and "game... Video games."

And here's the funny part: Those female humans some of you may have read about on the Internet will be more than willing to accept all your weird hobbies if you embrace the fact that they are all part of your inner child, who's still alive and healthy, because there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Once you start going all "THEY ARE NOT TOYS! THEY ARE FIGURINES I USE TO PLAY TEH L33T STRATEGY GAME KNOWN AS WARHAMMER WHICH IS A VERY MATURE ACTIVITY FOR MATURE PEOPLE SUCH AS MYSELF," you are in trouble.

I wouldn't really call game consoles "toys" -- I would call them entertainment devices. The word "toy" has a connotation that something only children play with, which is not the case; the average gamer is actually much older. Maybe this is just semantics though.

It is true that Nintendo does cater to a younger audience than either Sony or Microsoft (or many third parties) because it tries to cater to everyone, but that much has always been true, really. To say that is the "wrong message" is rather debatable, considering how much the Wii and DS have sold, and how great many of their recent games have been. So I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

Movies and music aren't play things or games with objectives where you can win or lose, that's why they're not toys.

Games can deliver more than fun. Nintendo focusses on fun. I think it's fine. Very few big developers focus on fun. They focus on a license, on technology, on mass appeal, on cinematic rather than fun, and more often than not I find those games not as awesome as a nintendo game.

Just because it provides entertainment value doesn't mean it's a toy. And like I said, the add campain of nintendo this entire gen has been nothing but clear that they want people to view it as toys. Superficial to say the least. NOTE: "to all people posting to grow up." Advise yourself first, and remember where exactly you are. Those are my two cents.

Anything people PLAY with is considered toys. Doesn't matter how old anyone is, and there's nothing wrong with it. Sports cars are toys, electronics, books, tools, even women can be considered toys (in the proper perspective :8 ).

So you think Sony and Microsoft systems are manly entertainment devices and Nintendo systems are kids toys? (not accusing just asking)

Remember, Sony systems are called Play...station, a station where one 'plays'. What does that name suggest to you?

For starters, some words used to describe this industry like "video games" are not the best use of those words, and I'll leave it at that... Also, I wasn't implying that nintendo is a toy, I said that their add campain aims for that opinion, which isn't helping this industry at all. But then again money is money , companies don't really care for the well being of an industry as log as they maximize profits.

nintendo makes consoles and games that appeal to everyone...

if the wii is a toy then so is the ps3 and 360.

Nintendo only makes games for their fans and casuals. Sony is the only one tha provides games for everyone.

All the game companies make games for their fans, and all of them make games for everyone.

Some just do it better than others, like Super Mario Galaxy for example. It appeals to children and adults by having something for both, or everyone. Children can pick it up and play it and have fun, and those gamers who expect something deeper and challenging can enjoy the deep gameplay that exists within the game by accessing the more difficult parts that children and casuals will not be able to reach. That's why it's such a masterpiece and critically acclaimed as such. Kinect's Sesame Street on the other hand is solely focused on young children and has no attractive value for more dedicated gamers and adults.

Ok I think I understand what you're trying to say now. Correct me if I'm wrong. You think the game industry should act more adult-like to be taken more seriously as a sophisticated form of entertainment instead of a family-friendly and easy-going hobby for everyone?

That's not what I meant at all, I just don't want the opinion that this industry is just childs play either (like most people in society have always viewed it).

Well who cares what non-gamers think? They could never understand the hobby like those of us who enjoy it on a regular basis.

I never would of guessed so many insecure people on SW's would be like "Consoles arent toys"... Its kinda weird how these are the same people who say Nintendo are "kiddy" insecurity at its finest.
