I think the xbox was the single most innovating console last gen.

The xbox was, in my opinion, innovated the most in hardware and online technology. It had a built in hardware, unified online service and that innovated in a lot of levels. This can be seen on the 360 and PS3, and if it wasn't for the xbox, we would still be using memory cards and having luckstur online. Though it didn't sell well, it innovated more than the GC and the PS2. WHo agrees?

Oh I totally agree the xbox hardware pulled gaming forward far more than the gamecube and ps2, but in terms of games I felt that the majority of the lineup was generic, to say the least.

The Xbox actually sold pretty well considering it sold 25 million from the US and Europe alone. It was like the first console that didn't need Japan to sell ok, give it some credit :P

The XBOX was innovative, unfortunately, the 360 is a step backwards.

No HDD anyone? Can someone say "under-perform"?

Agreed. Core/Arcade is stupider than Master Chief, Marcus Fenix and Banjo all getting together at disreputable motels for certain activities.

Can someone else say 'only stupid people buy the core?'
But ontopic; yeah agree. Xbox was the most innovative console.
Cube won in terms of games though (imo).

jaisimar_chelse

How? I was killed 2yr into the war. And though the dreamcast did have online and built in ethernet, it didn't have a unified online system like xbox live(like online chat from the get go, friend list). Also, though the xbox had mostly generic titles and lacked variety, it didn't have a game drought like the GC.

I still think the Dreamcast was the most innovative.

It was the first to try at online. It had a diversity of games, The hardware was solid, etc.

Too bad it died.

Well....the first playstation did more for gaming than any other system!! It took us into 3D gaming, the gaming industry would probably be a few years behind compared to today, and the most powerfull console would probably be the Nintendo Wii:cry:

The Xbox did a lot of good things with the online, no doubt, but it wasn't the single most innovative console. The Ps2 had some pretty amazing hardware and made game developers think new ways, just like the PS and the PS3. The Xbox was old PC parts put together and easy to develope on, but nothing new hardware wise and was easely maxed out. The consoles would have reached the online marked eventually anyways, they just had different ideas when it was time for it.

That would be the PS2 mate....

The system had 4x the no. of games than the xbox and 6x the no. of gams than the GC and i know more games doesn't mean good games but the system had one hell of a library and its list of AAAEs was astonishing.

The first playstation wasn't last gen, it was in the gen before(the 5th one) and we are talking about the 6th gen here.

The PS2 was a PS1 with upgraded graphics and a new processor(the controller, control ports and everythig else was the same) but it excelled in the gmae department and thats the reason it won and it had a sh!t load of titles. The PS3 is even more of a rehash, its a upgraded PS with harddrive(ripped off from the xbox) and a nextgen optical drive(the only place it has innovated) and its online is free, but the live influences are seen there. This gen the wii is the most innovative and you can bet the nextgen xbox and PS will have motion controls and other gimmicks(not that its bad).

Why do you need to upgrade the consoles just to add motion controls?? And the PS2 had some innovative stuff for transfering media(games) fast across the motherboard, and it had a faster CPU than the xbox per MHZ!!

But I'm not saying the Xbox wasn't innovative, it's just it wasn't the only one. And the Harddrive was optional for the PS2 you know...dahh!!!. It's pattetic that when going next gen, the X360 also uses optional harddrive, which clearly is needed now. But it wasn't THAT needed last gen. The Xbox and the X360 is still old cheap tech with new software.

You have a good point actually. Memory cards were a hassle and from what I heard, online for the PS2 was messy, which is why I got online for the Xbox. However, the games were lacking.

I thought 3D came with Sega with Sonic 3D

I thought the use of CDs came with Sega CD

I thought online came with Sega Dreamcast

I could be wrong but I think we owe most of modern gaming to Sega it had great ideas, to bad the competition seemed to know how to use it better.

So last gen I give it to the Dreamcast ^^

If you take the Dreamcast out I guess the Xbox wins though. (As innovating I mean)

Strangely enough I loved the GC when it was around. I still love the GC, actually. I also still play my PS2 for some of the games I wasn't able to finish because of my mem card getting lost (Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts 2). Xbox was a great system though, it was the most innovative. Not the best games, but innovative, nonetheless

so it's sony that innovated and not microsoft

Yeah, the last generation wasn't too innovative; it just refined 3-D, like the Genesis/SNES generation refined 2-D. Xbox Live as a unified online service was a good innovation, and it's come into play for this generation.

I think the Xbox's hand in online play was the most important aspect of last gen. Other systems tried their hand at it before the Xbox, but they weren't met with nearly the amount of success as XBL. The idea of a unified online community throughout the console rather the specific game communities is now the norm and other systems are attempting a hand at it, and if not they will be. XBL showed people are willing to pay for quality, it definitly is an inovation that will be felt for generations to come.

Yes, the xbox was the most innovative console, hardware wise. It had processors that truly pushed the envelope. It had all the mechanics for online and more importantly the desire to develop it into something great. Not to mention it was the first console with a hard drive, which I always thought was a great addition even though I argued against the console in this forum.

You have to admit that compared to what the xbox did, the 360 is very disappointing.

Hardware wise? That or the Dreamcast

Game wise? Hell no, I would say the PS2 or the Gamecube easily win that.

With games such as Singstar, Buzz and EyeToy, the PS2 made the first step in family-orientated and social gaming. That has to count for something in my opinion.
