I've been harping on this for awhile now. I stated a couple weeks back that the best time for M$ to lower their price would be on the same day that Halo 3 is released. Apparently someone was reading my posts. Now analyst are talking about what I already predicted should happen many weeks ago. If M$ really wants to sell XBox 360's, they should have 2 premium SKU's. One for $350 (or less) XBox 360 Premium and another premium for the regular $399, but include Halo 3 as a bundle. You think those babies won't sell like crazy? If M$ misses the Halo 3 price drop date, they will do it on Nov 22 (2nd Yr. Anniv.) just before the largest shopping day of the year.

Report: Microsoft Hints at 360 Price Cut Before Xmas

Microsoft executives have been talking about expanding the Xbox audience and getting more units into customers' hands. Corporate VP Peter Moore said he wants "a solid business with 90 million people." A price cut was strongly hinted at, and one analyst believes it'll happen this September.

According to a report onBloomberg.com, Microsoft is strongly considering its strategy for the Xbox 360 platform and what it can do to maintain its lead. As we stated in our article on the "Keys to Victory", there are two very important elements that Microsoft needs to pay attention to in order to better compete with the Wii - price and a wider array of content for a broad audience.

Bloomberg says that Microsoft will attempt to bring moms to the 360 by adding more family games and overhauling retail displays to make children's titles easier to find. Corporate VP Peter Moore recognizes that if Microsoft continues to cater to the same hardcore audience the company could wind up in the same position as they did with the original Xbox. "If we don't make that move, make it early and expand our demographic, we will wind up in the same place as with Xbox 1, a solid business with 25 million people,'' said Moore. "What I need is a solid business with 90 million people."

"If you don't start building that content and reputation it never comes," added Albert Penello, director of Xbox global platform marketing. "I don't want to be pigeonholed as a hard-core machine."

UBS AG analyst Heather Bellini believes that a price cut is coming this September. Considering that Halo 3 is launching on September 25, that could be the perfect one-two punch for Microsoft and could lead to a major sales spike going into the holiday season. "If they really are going to have a good Christmas games lineup, then they just have to have the largest number of boxes out there so that they sell the largest number of games," added Bellini.

And Microsoft realizes that a price cut may be just what's needed to get those boxes out there. "We are well aware that the sweet spot of the market is really 199 bucks,'' said David Hufford, a director of Xbox product management. "When mom walks into the store and sees she can get a console with a game for $250, she sees it as a $300 value. They've done a good job," he added, referring to the Wii, which he said has a "strong value proposition."

Indeed, price is possibly more important than anything. And despite the fact that the PS3 sells for $600, Sony should recognize that better than anyone. Their PS2 sold 75 million at or below that magic $199 price tag.

why do a price drop when halo 3 comes out? the game alone will have consoles flying off shelves. plus gta4 and other big name 360 games. and with xmas around the corner right after the halo release. the soonest ms should think about a price drop is next spring after the halo3/gta4 and xmas craze dies down.

Microsoft is just being smug right now, by Christmas time the Wii will be in charge. Micro had better lower the price of atleast ONE of their three skus soon or I won't by one.

That's what I was thinking as well. Halo will sell 360's at full price. GTA as well. So do it during X-mas to explode sales off the chart with MS brilliant advertising. I'm sure they'll come up with a great commercial to inform ppl of the price drop.

if anything, there will be a console/game bundle this holiday season before a real price drop. probably with some bad sellers (VP anyone?) or just old games they're trying to get out to the public.

Are you crazy. The 360 has been out for almost 2 years now. Most console manufactures drop their price between 1-2yrs after launch. XBox 360 are actually making a profit now on every system sold, so now is a great time to give back to fans who have waited patiently for a price drop. Drop the price on Halo 3 launch day to get the system selling just before the holiday season. With all the new games coming out in Sept, Oct & Nov, M$ could easily ride the wave of sales into 2008.

Sony needs to drop their price as well, but their main concern is if we drop $50-$100, how much more money will we be losing on every PS3 sold? They want to sell more systems, but they don't want to lose more billions like they've already have.

We can only dream that could happen. I'd be surprise if the system drops to $300. Most likely it'll drop $50. This way M$ can still make some kind of profit off the system's sales. It's definitely going to happen this year. It won't happen next Spring. No one buys game consoles in the Spring. They buy them during the holidays, so that's the best time to drop the price.

because they can generate more profit during the halo 3 release from the people who can't wait to get their hands on the game. dropping the price in spring will scoop up all the rest who didn't want to spend $400 on a console. plus the fiscal year or whatever its called doesn't end until the end of march i believe, so if they released a price drop in late jan or in feb, they'ed still pick up some extra people. it's basic economics, not rocket science.

No one even knew the release date of Halo 3 until about a month ago. So no one predicted a price drop on the same day Halo 3 was released. I mentioned it a couple days after the release date was announced. There are still people thinking the price won't drop until next year. lol!! Get your facts straight.

No. You drop the price during the time when most people are actual at the retail stores willing and able to spend their hard earn dollar. No one is going to buy game consoles in Jan & Feb. Why you ask? Because they are ALL BROKE from the holidays. Kind of makes sense, doesn't it. You may want to retake that economics course.

This is fairly obvious, most people saw this coming.

The 360 has been out over a year-and-a-half without a price drop, its sales are declining, and Wii hastaken the gaming market by storm. It's the natural thing to do, but it's too late now.

ugh whatever. dropping the price while halo 3 gets release is a great idea for us, the consumers. but companies hardly ever work like that. ms will try to milk the sales and profits for as long as they can. why sell a million units at $200 a piece when you can sell 750,000 units at $300 a piece and pick up the other 250k during a price drop later on after the buzz has died down? not only will you pick up most of the people who didn't want to buy the console at $300, but it also keeps your product in the media months after the halo/gta4/media craze is over. and since we've not heard much about the 360 line up for '08, they may need that media attention.

believe what you want to believe and i'll believe what i want to believe. if it happens in september, then bravo for you being correct.
