I am disappointed with Halo3's gameplay (Halo2 was better!) but I don't regret buying it, because of its smooth online features (well, 4 player coop was kinda fun, too I guess).
Matchmaking and in-game levels are the foundation of Halo3 ranked multiplayer. You get matched up against people of similar skill level and you don't have total control over which maps and gametypes you play. In-game levels make you want your team to win. There aren't as many people hiding behind walls with sniper rifles trying to get a good kill/death ratio (ghaa PC shooters).
I really don't know how you could say you don't like the system, because you can still set up and play any gametype you want. It just won't be ranked. I think it's good that people can't play on their favorite map against newbies every match to rank up.
I'm not trying to say that Halo2/3 are the only games that have these sort of systems. I'm sure they've been done before.
What do you think about Halo-style matchmaking and levels?
