The 41-year-old designer is now set to work on the much-delayed PS3 exclusive The Last Guardian in a freelance capacity, before moving on to personal projects, Eurogamer claims.
It's reported that Ueda' shock departure from the Sony development studio is one of the reasons Last Guardian has gone missing in action this year.
Although not a major blip on the mainstream radar, The Last Guardian is perhaps one of the most anticipated games among PlayStation 3 fans.
The title was originally scheduled for release in "late 2011", before being delayed into an unspecified time in 2012.
The last we heard of the project was that Ueda was "hard at work," according to Sony's associate product marketing manager, Brian Dunn, who said in September:
"We wanted to confirm that The Last Guardian is not on the schedule for this year's Tokyo Game Show. However we can assure you that Ueda-san and the rest of the development team are hard at work to bring his lofty vision to life and deliver the very best gaming experience possible."
Sony said it does not comment on rumour and speculation.
