Hell no. $399 is $399, the vast majority of people are not going to be so pursuaded by another 40 gigs of hard-drive space. If the 40 GB PS3 went down to $299 that would have a far bigger impact.

When the starting price of a PS3 is less than a 360 or a Wii, then come back to me.

But I know you won't be coming back anytime soon.

Then they would move lots and lots of consoles, that's for sure. Who knows just how much though. If they had ample supply, they might be able to move 3-4 million in December alone, and that's just in North America.

It's all conjecture really.

At this point, I think most people are holding off on getting a ps3 due to it's lack of software, not price.

I'm thinking the '08 release schedule will do more for ps3 sales than any price drop could...

Im honestly predicting 80gb going down to $399 and the 40gb going down to either $350 or $299 next year. That be prettty awesome. That with games like KZ2, MGS 4, White Knight story, GT 5, and exc. would be killer if it got down to that price.

By the time the 80GB model goes down to $399, the Wii will be $199 and the Xbox 360 Premium will be $299. The PS3 still won't have a sizable quantity of good games at that point either. Sony still has not been able to amortise the cost of the hardware yet.

Yeah I agree. 40gb or 80gb is less important number to the average consumer than the price tag.

PS3 is actually affordable now. that coupled with the fact they have the better 08 lineup means tehres going to be mroe PS3s sold. I really dont think MS can do Price Drop after Pice drop.

The PS3 is already at $399. Sure people in the know wouldn't buy the gimped version, but people in the know have probably already bought their next gen system of choice, or systems for that matter.

It needs to hit $299. Any version of the PS3. That would boost sales. But if the 360 drops to $199 while the PS3 is at $299 it will still be a hard sell. Money matters.

It would be great if the price dropped, but I doubt it will anytime soon. I'm getting one soon anyway, and it's gonna be the 80 gig. I get twice as much for only $100 dollars more

It wont happen for a long time.

Sony are losing far too much money on hardware as it is, and they aren't recouping losses with software as games sell so atrociously on the PS3.

You underestimate PS2's role in all of this.As long as PS2 sales remain this strong, Sony can weather bumps in the road, should there be any. This means next year they can probably cut prices again too.

Consider this:

If you decrease the price on a new product you're losing money on every one you sell, but you still sell an older product you're finally making money on, you're still losing money. If it costs $80 to produce a PS2 Sony is making $20-$30 on each one sold. The PS3 costs $580 to produce and you only sell it for $499. They're losing $80 on every console sold, meaning the gaming division is still losing $50-$60 for every PS2 and PS3 sold.

This is a very basic example not taking into account several factors including rate of consoles being sold. These numbers are also just for example because I don't know how much the system costs to produce.

yeah i think taht sony is losing a lot in video game sales, but that the ps2 is still outselling the 360 and ps3 in some places.

$400 is still too expensive when you consider the fact that 95% of PS2 sales came at $200 & below.

Plus people want to be able to play at least a few of their PS2 games on their PS3. For $400 that's not possible. That's a big reason people are shunning it.

Everytime I read that I wonder, "Then why are they in such a rush to get rid of their PS2?" Why don't they just keep it and buy a PS3. Its killing two birds with two stones, but you're not losing money or anything. Its not like Gamestop will give anything over an insult in trade-in credit.

You must factor in software sells to which they get money from. That could very easily eliminate losses.

Makes 3 of us. If I ever get one, it'd be the 80 Gig one, despite the 100 extra, it's well worth it. The only thing holding me back is, yeah... the lack of a lot of games. There are a few, don't get me wrong, but I'd like to know that there's a continuous stream of good games coming my way. And not just 3 or 4 that once I get through, that my ps3's just gonna sit there and gather dust.

And the fact that they sell more ps2s than they do ps3s. (sad.. I know)
