Why doesn't anyone notice games are sub HD before someone "confirms" a game may be sub HD? Surely we should notice straight away a game is sub 720p, as it is such an important issue?

May aswell quit console gaming and get a gaming rig for some true, true HD.

BTW, Alan Wake is confirmed 720p.

I completely agree. Resolution is such a stupid thing to argue over. Oh and people will just say your link means nothing, as it was just the community manager who said that.

if you sit far away enough from the display then you may not notice subtle changes. But really the reason you dont notice is because unless you own a PC then you have nothing to compare the game to. The game would look better, but without a basis of comparison you wouldnt notice anyway.

The way people noticed in the first place is because the HUD was being displayed in a different resolution then the rest of the game.

in the case of the Alan Wake screenshot, upon seeing it people immediately reacted with "that looks blurry"

resolution adds a lot of sharpness, i play all of my PC games in high resolutions so when i play something that's not in those high resolutions you see it immediately

it's just a matter of being used to something, you notice it more, if you're used to see sharper games then when you see a sub-HD game you notice it immediately, if you're used to sub-HD then you don't notice anything out of the ordinary

Screenshots are downsized, and are rarely released at 1280×720 dimensions. Once you've downsized and compressed into a JPEG, you lose a bit of image quality.

yeah pretty much for console only gamers 720p is what there used to so it looks great couldn't possibly be anything better. Being a pc gamer this gen when i played some ps3 at my friends house the only game that looked good visually to me was fat princess because it ran in 1080p the other games re5,street fighter IV, and mw2 and they all looked blurry due to lower resolution. PC games just plain look better visually then the console games.

For the most part, the only ones who care are the fanboys on each side trying to claim some sort of ownage. If you guys didn't pay so much attention to them then it wouldn't be big.

But you feed them, and they keep coming back.

This of course is a generalized post.

Wait, so the point of the thread was to point out resolution isn't a big deal yet you felt it necessary to point out what the Remedy CM said.

That image was far blurrier than the resolution it was at. The reason it was so blurry was because it was a bad shot.

I don't get why it's such a big deal to console owners.

If you want all your games at 1080p you should own a PC, but since you don't you shouldn't complain.

It'd be like me complaining that the DS doesn't have good graphics. I mean if that's all I cared about I wouldn't have gotten the DS!

Like Chutebox said, it's all about the ownage. People will find new ways to spin things to favor them too if certain games are/aren't HD.

If game resolution wasn't a big deal then people would be loving the Wii and would have accepted the iPod/Phone/Pad as a gaming device.

I notice, and to be honest, resolution has always been somewhat of a big deal for me. I remember playing Modern Warfare 2 on PS3 and wondering how it could possibly run at such a low res. Am I a snob? Sure. :P

I think the most important thing for console games is that the game runs at the native res. Playing a 540p game on a 720p TV is irksome to me, while playing a 720p native game on a 720p TV looks good, because it is running at the TV's native res.

Yeah, I have a PS3 and the only game I have on it is Demon's Souls. And it really does look pretty bad at such a low res. It runs at 720p and it's hard to really appreciate the textures, 3D models and animations when the whole screen is just a jagged mess. I really am disappointed.

Really, the consoles are only good for Blu-Ray, and the few decent exclusives you can't get on PC. GT5, I'm looking at you!

A lot of people do overplay its importance. Resolution that is. Personally, I'm more concerned about framerate than resolution.

Well yeah, you want to aim for 60 fps. I'll tone down eye candy to make sure I hit 60 fps.

I like high framerate as well especially so for multiplayer first person shooters but the last thing i will turn down is my resolution i always play at my native resolution anything below that just doesn't look good and waste all the graphical detail.

Consoles are very limited compared to PC though, on PC the gamer sets his own resolution to suit him. :P

Yes, by eye candy I meant in game settings. If I can't hit 60fps at 1080p on lowest settings, then it's time for an upgrade, imo.

True... :P It's definitely not as big a deal on consoles, especially considering most TVs run at 720p native. As long as it's running at the native res, it looks good.

I notice a big difference, I rebought GTA4 because of it. Sub HD games just look blurrier and uglier, period. I dunno if some gamers are using component or what, but on my TV with HDMI it stands out. Games like Halo, Ghostbusters PS3, GTA4 PS3, are noticeably blurry. I'm glad AW is 720p.

res is VERY important to anybody who plays on a PC

the difference in resolution isn't as noticeable on tv's, but on a monitor it's unforgiving, especially when high res just looks sooooooooooooooo good

It's only a big deal because it's a number. Usually when you argue about graphics all you can do is post pictures and say "I think this looks better than that", and anyone is free to disagree with you. But nobody can argue that 720 isn't bigger than 640p, or whatever. So people latch onto it and make it a big deal.

I call BS. If you are used to "high resolutions", then 720p would look blurry to you. You would not be an expert as to the levels of blurriness that separate 720p and 540p.

The truth is, you would not notice any difference at all, same as no one else noticed anything until someone brought it up.

The same as no one noticed it with MGS4 even when it won best graphics of the year and it didn't even run at 720p.

In my opinion with these consoles right now and all the game coming out at or closer to 720p it is better to have a 720p TV if gaming is your main thing.

People tend to forget that no matter what you input into these tv's that the tv will scale the game or program to its (the TV's) native resolution. So yes if you do have a 1080p TV anything below that is scaled up to 1080p by whatever scaler chip is in the set. So it is best to not buy a cheap 1080p set because chances are the TV's scaler chip might be crap. Now I know if your watching a 1080p source like blu-ray you would be fine of course but these are games we are talking about here.

So really to go against a game which may be a little lower rez than 720p is silly because really lets not forget that for many console gamers a game that is at 720p has got to get scaled up quite a bit more on a 1080p set leaving you at the mercy of how good your TV set can scale that picture.

I agree...most games that are sub-HD I wouldn't even notice if someone didn't point it out :?. I mean, only a few days ago did I find out MGS 4 was sub-HD. Doesn't exactly mean the game isn't a graphical powerhouse, because all those supposedly "not high definition" were some sweet looking games :D.

The funny part is most guys on here dont realise how over 90% of their games are being scaled up by their TV sets scaler chip! So why start caring about just below 720p anyhow!

I almost feel sorry for you console kiddies always creating topics about graphics king, resolution, fps, the Cell processor, and a bunch of BS. If resolution isnt such a big deal, then why buy an HDTV? Why buy a 1920x1200 monitor when you can buy a 1280x1024 monitor?

As much as I love HD to death, in this case in what I've seen of AW, Resolution isn't a big deal. It does bother me when games are lower resoltion, but it depends on the game. I'm sure Alan Wake will NOT be one of those games that bothers me whether it's 540p or 720p. It's not like 720p is the pinnacle anyways.

That being said, after 1000 Alan Wake threads, this thread is just one giant thread of Damage Control, just in case it doesn't pan out, like ownage insurance.

I don't care what resolution AW is, I just want to play it and enjoy it, but just for the record, this thing has a chance at going either way.

It's 50/50. You flip a coin, and that's that. A "Community Manager" isnt' a reliable quote...but he said what he needed to say, and we all have to wait for AW to come out in the meantime. I would guess this thread will be long gone by the time AW comes out.

Back to waiting to actually play AW now.

How can you possibly know that, when it's clear you don't know about 1080p native games on consoles.(NOT UPSCALED)

There isn't many native console 1080p games, but they do indeed exist.

For the record, PS3 has more of them, but it's a small list for both consoles. I still can't believe you declared that.

I meant hardware intensive games. Not some PSN/sports games lol.
