If I get a $1000 gaming PC(without monitor) and upgrades it every 2 years to it's equivalent 2 years ago, how much money do you think I would spend?

I don't know much about computers but I'm guessing CPU+RAM+others after 2 years then GPU after another 2 years then CPU after another 2 years then GPU so on...That means new CPU+others every 4 years and new GPU every 4 years. Or maybe you would do it differently?

How much money do you think I would spend to get the equivalent powered PC every 2 years?

Ummm, another $1,000...

PC hardware prices are pretty stagnant in terms of what to expect.

Why would you do that? Only thing worth upgrading every 2 years would be the graphics card and even then.

Many are still going strong with their 2600K and it's 5 years old now.

It would be completely unnecessary to upgrade your RAM or motherboard every two years. You most likely won't see any benefit.

You really don't need to upgrade 2 years other then GPU, even a card like a 970 will last you for a long time and Ram/Motherboards are unnecessary to upgrade every 2 years. Also what's your specs?

Or maybe I should upgrade GPU every 3 years and CPU every 6 years, that sounds right? How much would that cost?

It really depends on what you're shooting for, but a few hundred bucks ON CPU/RAM + smaller components, and probably $300-$800 on a new GPU.

Buy a solid CPU/RAM out of the gate, and you'll be fine for a while.

You don't always have to buy new parts, you can turn down graphical settings for better frame rates or vice versa. That's what's great about it.

That would make a lot more sense. You'd have to upgrade the motherboard as well. The newer CPU sockets usually don't fit in 6 years old motherboards.

Why do you have to upgrade every 2 years? Many people sit on hardware for 5+ years without issue.

Seriously, if you buy a good gpu, you wont have to upgrade every three years.

My 2600K and 780Ti were doing alright at 1080p. I decided I wanted more so I dumped a boat load of cash on a new PC.

My system was built in 2011. The only thing I upgraded last year was the GPU which you really don't need unless you want maximum graphics. You will actually save money due to steam sales, etc etc.

you don't just upgrade for the sake of upgrading unless you want to stay at the max settings. I build my computer in 2012 and I haven't upgraded a single thing. Still playing games at 1080p and 60fps at console equivalent settings or greater depending on the game.

@me2002: You don't need to buy a new computer/upgrade every 2 years. Its not like new cpu/gpu gens are a 50% or more improvement to the previous gen anymore like they used to be.

You will get a 10% perf increase, maybe 20% at best between gens these days. I have several friends still rocking Sandy Bridge chips or Phenom II's that are several years old, have DDR2/3 memory, and as long as they keep a fairly modern graphics card, they still game just fine.

PC gaming is expensive, I was going to upgrade my PC for VR, but the cost just keeps adding up

GTX970 €380

Intel i5-4590 €228

Motherboard and another 4 gigs for ram €100

If you get a good motherboard and CPU, you wont have to upgrade the CPU, RAM or the motherboard for maybe 4 - 6 years.

The only thing you'll need to upgrade is the graphics card and how often depends on what you get in the first place. If you get a GTX 950, your good for 1 - 2 years. If you get a 970, then your good for longer.

If you build the computer with that a £1000 budget, than that's a pretty big budget, you're PC will last, I don't know if it's the same for dollars. But if you buy prebuilt, your paying for labour too.

You can upgrade every 2 years if you want. There is always new PC hardware around every 6 months it seems, especially GPUs. But you also can use your existing computer past 2 years without upgrading. It really depends how much performance you want out of the box.
