So apparently many people are saying MGS4 and GTA4 don't deserve a 10.

If that's so, what games that have come out this generation DOES deserve a 10?

I highly suspect most of these people will say "no games this gen deserves a 10."

If that's so, WHY USE A 10-POINT SCALE? We might as well grade games out of 9.5 if we're never going to use 10.

A 10 does not mean the game is perfect. It simply means that (in the reviewer's OPINION) the game is among the best games, out of all the games being graded out of 10.

Are MGS4 and GTA4 among the best games this gen? I think most sensible people would agree.

Conclusion, stop complaining and cluttering up the boards.

Super Mario Galaxy.

I think Alex Navarro wanted to give it a 10, but as they said in one of the Reviewer's Blogs, everyone has to agree with the score when giving something a 10. It must have not flied/flown(?) by everyone.

No game really deserves a 10.

A 10 is a game with is PERFECT, and everyone will love. It should also be a game with NO bugs. It should be flawless while offering an amazing/epic experience.

GTA IV was probably a 9.3 or so. I dont know about MGSIV, i've never played it. I played snake eater though, and I enjoyed that game. But from what i've heard, people say MGSIV was not a 10.

GTA4 doesn't seem better than every game since whatever the last 10 game was. How many times do you have to do a car chase before it gets like "...yay........"? And the whole "lock on" system just leaves you tapping the lock-on button and firing for 2 seconds before locking onto the next enemy right after to kill him near instantly too. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was a great game, but a 10? I just can't see how it got that.

None of them to be honest.

a 10 should be flawless or leagues ahead of the competition.

THere should be a massive difference between MGS 4 and the rest of the games in its genre

same with GTA 4

Which isn't the case, as there are games in each of there genres that do certain things better. Thief and Splintercell do stealth gameplay better overall than MGS 4(which does action better though)

and GTA 4 lacked some of the variety of previous versions.

Well, since both MGS4 and GTA4 both have terrible multiplayer it brings them down to Bioshock's level and in that case it's better than both. No multiplayer, -.5 (i.e. Bioshock), bad multiplayer -.5 (GTA4, MGS4). It' debatable but I think games like COD4, Halo3 and Gears of War are some of the only games you could give a 10 to because they are the complete package.

I still don't understand the whole MGS4 and GTA4 not deserving 10 thing.

Those 2 are easily better than just about every game to have come out since the release of the ps3/360/wii. The only game that even comes close to what those 2 games did is Super Mario Galaxy, which is the only other game I could honestly see it get a 10.

MGS4 had a lot of glaring flaws the GS review didn't take into account:

-Broken online

-Needlessly convoluted storytelling

-Excessive load times

-No broad appeal

-Some cutscenes that are almost to the point of being lectures on abstract concepts.

-Mission briefings repeated the same thing 40 times and were just excruciatingly dull

-Just way too many cutscenes in general that come in at the wrong time, when you are getting into the gameplay and a cutscenes is triggered it really takes you out of the game and this happens far too often

Because it actually was for its time leagues better than anything out there.

Look at the game today and it has aged pretty well.

Not saying they have to do 1 thing better, and poof said game isn't a 10

But the gap between Metal Gear Solid 4 and every game in its genre isn't that big. Coming from somebody who loves MGS 4.

Same with GTA 4. There are many reasons to say it did a bunch of things worse than previous GTA games.

One of MGSs biggest selling point (the story) has its flaws as well. The writing is kind of redundant, and then there is that whole ending after the credits feeling tacked on.

GTA 4 and MGS 4 are easily the best games this gen, but they aren't perfect. They have flaws. Considerable flaws. Flaws that should hold the game back from the RARE score of a 10.

There are games in the past that were as big as MGS 4 and GTA 4 in previous years, but never got 10s either because there flaws were taken into consideration.

IMO Gamespot and IGN were soft on these 2 games.

No game and I mean no game ever deserves a 10. 10 means perfect. A game carries absolutely no flaws whatsoever by the time of release and it not only exceeds in each attribute, but also redefines the genre it's specifies in.

No game has done this. Symphony of the Night is the best game I've ever played and I don't consider it to be a 10. But it comes awfully close (9.9).

All high scoring games this gen: MGS4, GTA4, Crysis, SMG, Halo 3, Gears, and Oblivion. They all got the scores they deserve IMO. But that's MY opinion. Not everyone will agree with me since most people here are fanboys :(.

EDIT: SMG deserves a 10 as well IMO.

SMG does, I have a Wii and gave this game a rent and it was really good. Very easy to play, fun, and has replay value just like all the other Super Mario games. IMO games that deserve a 10 are games that have good game play, appeal to casual and hardcore gamers. I guess it has to have some decent graphics.

MGS 4- Does not appeal to everyone only real fans of the series.

GTA 4- Looks great, everything else we've done before it's stale and old gameplay, yes there are a little tweeks and ajustments in the game play but still, we done all these missions before. Oh and the online is horrible, stand across from someone and shoot and wait for someone to run out of life first. The online could be soooooo much better if there were one shot kills.

For its time OOT was a *real* 10. It was just so much better than the other games at the time. 10 are all opinions anyways , Gears was a 10 for me, I played that game for almost a year. Others hated it. I dont care about reviews anymore, other than to see if the game is trash or not.

That's why GS no longer goes by "Perfect" anymore. It's now "Prime".

To review game: GS first compares the game to others in the same genre and on the same platform. Lastly, they do an overall comparison to other games. If the game they are reviewing holds up to or exceeds the standard in terms of playability, fun, and quality, they score accordingly. (at least that's how I think they do :)).

No game is perfect since everyone has opinions.

How many times do i have to read: 10 isn't Perfect its Prime?.

Whats the point of getting the maximum score if its not perfect?

In my opinion changing Perfect to Prime was a total cop out.

Even if SC and Thief had better stealth gameplay, that doesn't mean that MGS4 wasn't remarkable. You can always find certain flaws or aspects of a game that aren't that good, but as a whole, MGS 4 is much better than Thief and SC. If anything, the standards should be based on what that particular game did and why most games haven't come close to it.

Calling it "Prime" then it would seem more suitable to give games a 10 I guess.

I honestly go by using GS' old rating system with 10 being a perfect to me instead of prime. While no game may be a 10, I have no reason to downplay the games that recieved a 10 on this site with the exception of THPS3.

Me too. I like GS's old review system better. THPS3. I forgot about that.

Or maybe they just don't share your opinion.

KEYWORD : Opinion

I don't know about them but I know I don't

How is the online broken? I really enjoy playing MGO. And theres NO loading past the installs. I also enjoyed the story.
