If Microsoft did not buy Rare Nintendo would have a monopoly on the console industry!

Forget Halo, most people bought Xbox to play Rare's excellent new titles like Viva Pinata, Kameo, etc. The only reason Kinect sold was due to their kinect games.

Without Rare the N64 might have sunk. Xbox came out of nowhere with 20 million units sold as opposed to Nintendo's 20ish million GCs. Meaning with Rare's help they tied a giant of the industry. Rare has always been cutting edge in their presentation.

Nah, Nintendo's fate was sealed the moment they pushed forward with cartridges on N64, while everyone else was moving to CD.

Even after supposedly "learning" from their mistake, they proceed to again pick a wonky standard with the gamecube, and it's mini discs.

This lost them so much of their 3rd party support, they never really recovered.

I wouldn't say Kinect sold because it had a high influx of good games, the idea was what sold.

Regardless, Rare would likely have left Nintendo eventually, as Nintendo was quite domineering back then, especially over the IPs they owned. Rare makes good/great games, but I think they are overstated nowadays. No doubt their games were huge back when they came out, but games like GoldenEye don't hold up well today.

It's hard to know if they would have continued their legacy with Nintendo, but I would guess over time they would have fallen into a situation similar to Yooka-Laylee.

THIS IS NOT TRUE! Everyone loves Nintendo. Microsoft are the jerks that threw big money and bought Rare. They barely let Rare do what Rare wants to do.

Everyone of Rare's N64 games is a classic that holds up well today. I beg to disagree with you. Rare still makes excellent software and basically sold the Kinect. Without Rare the Kinect would be nowhere.

They're just not as important as you're making them out to be.

Imagine the SNES, but without the support of Capcom, Squaresoft, and Konami. That's the picture you're painting here with Rare.

There were a lot of reasons to own a 360. Viva Pinata and Kameo being among them, but not a huge deal, and not console defining games.

Aside from that, Nintendo has been repeatedly kicking themselves in the nuts since the N64. Doesn't have much of anything to do with Rare.

I'm not denying that Rare had some great games back in the day.

The N64 was only moderately successful because of all the hype, and the immense success of the big N's previous 2 consoles. Imagine if they hadn't been so stupid, and had just used CD as their main format. Final fantasy 7 would have been on N64, not playstation.

Do you know how many people (myself included) bought a PSX JUST for that game? Nevermind all the PSX exclusives that were only exclusive because the PSX used CDs, and N64 used cartridges.

Once 3rd party support started waning, that was the beginning of the end for the big N.

If any of the big three console makers had Capcom, Squaresoft, or Konami as a 2nd party developer that would be a dealbreaker.

People bought the original Xbox for Rare I am pretty sure and the 360's killer app was Perfect Dark Zero.

It was a tactical choice. From what I read they did not think Zelda was possible on CD. The carts did make load times nonexistant though which was cool.

Who else thinks Perfect Dark Zero is better than Halo 3 and 4? Honestly I am surprised Microsoft never made a sequel to it with how well it sold. I know it would seem like shooter overload but some people genuinely have different tastes in their FPS games.

I disagree, they have made some pretty great games post buyout. Their biggest wtf game though was Nuts and Bolts. Despite being a genuinely pleasant experience and phenomenal game in its own right. It felt like a huge FU to fans. In the first part they literally make fun of platformers in a dialogue box. >_> yeah way to appreciate the fans.

Lets be honest.. A ton of people bought the Xbox to play Halo 3, myself included, and also a large amount of kids at my school.

Plus, until RARE replay came out, I had never heard of the company Rare...

I've seen a lot of people saying this, acting as if the 'magic' from Rare left to do bigger and better things, and what was the result of that?

Yooka-Laylee, a near carbon copy of what they were doing in the mid-90's with absolutely zero forward progression.

Not enough people bought Kameo or Viva Pinata 1/2 which is why they didn't make Kameo 2 or VP3. Shame really since they were excellent.

You act like yooka laylee was made by all the people, even kojima can't spurn gold with shitty underlings.

Also yes, they left to do better things than at least the current rare has done, they divided into tons of other devs that have done good things.

Not really the stampler brothers were looking for an out they weren't interested in making games anymore and oddly decided their employees weren't either it's why there was such an Exodus of employees.

Microsoft buying them out was their chance but they took the opportunity to screw with the remaining staff before they left.

People can argue all they want but there is only one reason rare had so many issues.... And that's the srampler brothers.

I thought Nintendo was nuts for discontinuing their relationship with Rare at the time. But in hindsight, they weren't as crazy as I thought. Most of the talented folks had left to form Free Radical.

I doubt it. Nintendo has lost touch with most of the gaming market.

Rare has done very little of interest in almost 20 years. It's all speculation at this point. Greater developers who have actually been active in the last two decades have withered away because they were unable to adapt - or even just release a good game. Shit happens. There's nothing magical about Rare.

Nintendo has been out of touch for years.

Nintendo sold Rare to MS

MS did not kill Rare, Kameo, N&B, Viva Pinata, all critically acclaimed games.

The reason Rare went Kinect is because that's the game Rare made that sold the most.

MS is letting Rare make a brand new IP, Sea of Thieves.

All this has been iterated over and over. Cows continue to ignore the facts, just to keep up their anti MS BS, and continue to show how they're the worst fanboys,

Just to clarify things here, Rare ruin Rare. Rare had poor management during there run with Nintendo, Rare made good quality games on Nintendo yes but they had poor management, it hurt themselves more so, Nintendo saw this problem and when Rare ask Nintendo to buyout Rare, they turn there backs on them. So you can actually blame Nintendo for not helping out Rare, MS just step in and buy them out. I never really understood why everyone keeps blaming MS for hurting Rare when they did it to themselves and so with that, blame Nintendo, not MS.

Rare would've done better under Nintendo, but not enough to change Nintendo's fortunes. Nintendo would've still struggled with the GameCube, and then the Wii U, regardless of what Rare did.
