...What do you think it would score?

Personally I'd say a solid AAAE - it really is one of the best games I've ever played. The pure simplicity of the gameplay, combined with how potentially deep the game is (in terms of crafting, exploration, mod support and what you can build) is the prime example of a game which is easy to learn, but hard to master.

For a game that cost me £12, I've spent more time with it than a lot of full priced retail games (any platform). Currently playing on a little server set up by some real-life friends, and even though the beta doesn't feature a fully featured MP (no server browser - although some people could argue that is a very good thing to stop griefing) I find myself spending hours on building a simple house.

To make this SW worthy.... I'm guessing there is absolutely no way this could run on consoles, given the massive worlds which stream, which I guess require a lot of RAM?

I would love to try it, but I just don't have time. You really have to have many, many hours to really enjoy this game.

I honestly can't think of that many things wrong with it - granted it's in beta and I'm only playing it on a vanilla server with friends, but for what it aims to do - it succeeds.

It's an addictive game, once you start a project it goes from there really. Once I've built one thing it's onto the next the next and so on...... In the state its in now I could see it with an 8 or an 8.5 it a great game.

The game from what I have seen is too unique and too vast in the amount of time people have played into it.. For the price, it would probably get a AAA..

There is nowhere to go but down in the nerd kingdom once you've posted on a video game forum...

Probably a really low score. But when it comes to MineCraft the score/review means nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Tell that to the 1,000,000+ million who have paid for it on word of mouth alone.

And what makes all other games not "nerd toys?"

I think it might get a mediocre score, due to the annoyance of creepers, and that it can take quite a powerful machine due to rendering HUGE environments in Java.

What we're doing in the server is building lots of massive bases to protect ourselves, then turning off peaceful mode. As for powerful machine, very true - but because the graphics aren't exactly ultra detailed - you really don't lose anything by just playing it in a small window.

Java isn't exactly the best engine for large 3-dimensional worlds (I watched my brother play it on a Radeon HD 5770, and there's still the occasional stutter). I personally believe that this is due to Minecraft trying to render environments larger than Crysis' Lingshan Island.

Yeah, I play on a laptop with: 3GB Ram AMD P320 dual core (2.1GHZ) and an ATI 4250 (on board graphics so not that good) So whilst it's not the best machine out there by a long shot! there are still brief stutters when loading massive objects/when it turns to night - especially when exploring. Also....are they still doing it where if you've brought the beta then you get the final product free?

No idea. Clearly there are reviewers that both like and play the game, but who knows what kind of number score it would get.

ZeroPunctuation definitely likes it, and he doesn't like much at all, really.

Me, I love it. I run a whitelisted vanilla SMP server for me and 17(!) other friends. Best $20 I've spent on a game in a long, long while. No, I'm not posting the domain name.

Beta 1.4 comes out next week btw.

Dont know, on one hand it looks really ugly and lacks a story and handholding. But at the same time, Gamespot seems to think well of Minecraft. Minecraft got Indie Goty last year on IndieDB.

How different is the free version of Minecraft compared to the current release? I want to buy the game, but I'm unsure of how much I"ll like it. Figured I use the free version as a measure tool

Kickinurass

VERY different. In fact they are even considered to be different modes. Creative and Survival. (had to reword your quote somewhat, sorry about that). A lets Play might answer this better than me.

Creative
You have infinite blocks
There is no crafting
No mining either
No Nether
No enemies or mobs
No tools,
Limited world
No moddability from my knowledge
Lava is infinite
Saving is only for people who bought the game

Beta
Blocks are not infinite but new ones can be obtained and created
There is crafting, plenty of objects to create
Mining is in, obtain iron, diamond, gold and redstone
Nether is an alternate more hostile world that is accessible through portals
Enemies and mobs are in, but enemies can be turned off via peaceful difficulty
Minecarts,****c lacks doors, compasses, redstone, buttons, pickaxes, furnaces, TNTs (exist in ****c but cant blow up)
World is infinite, or rather 8 times the size of earth
Game can be modded to add new mobs, blocks, tools and other cool stuff
Lava is not infinite
Since you have already bought the game, you can save

Can a game like Minecraft even be reviewed reliable? specially in its current state? I would say one would have to wait till its in its final release even then its a mishmash sandbox game, design your own stuff game so there really isn't a reliable way to review such a thing...though I will say I cannot get why people are so over on it...I played it, it was unique but its like people are treating it likes its god in the pc arena...

You can get extremely unlucky and spawn in a room filled with creepers. Add to that the game literally just drops you into a world and lets you figure out what to do from there. In other words, reviews would slam it.

It would have to be critiqued fairly, and to be honest--as much as I like it for its ambition, as a product: it's flawed. It just doesn't do a good of a job to introduce you to its concepts, in a way it works to the games' emergent take on games, yet on the other hand, it's a giant utopia without a welcome mat or any form of guidance.

Do you have any friends with a credit card? If so you could ask them to gift it to you via gift codes and then you can give them money later on. I am also certain Paypal does not require a credit card as well, but I could be wrong.

But true, for some games reviews dont matter, a Minecraft review wont change anyone's mind.

Had to comment on this, Minecraft is by no means finished - even the developers admit that. But it is far from shovelware. It's as good a game as you want it to be.

It is far from perfect, but I have already had moments in it where I was more scared, excited, amazed, and so on than many other games this gen (not to say this gen doesnt have awsome games).

it would get a 1 b/c it doesnt have awesome 1337 grafffixxxs. it doesnt have regenerating health where your screen gets all bloody when you take damage. it doesnt have 5000 person online multiplayer. it doesnt have a story with explosions, guns, hot chicks, explosions, russians, explosions. it gives you too much freedom and not enough corridors.
