does that mean the next Xbox might not come with a disc drive and you buy games from live?

it seems like the logical step to me for them since they have been talking up digital distribution for a while now and games cant be much bigger then HD movies which are already on XBL

they have even gone as far as to say "shiny Discs" will be old news when it comes to movies in 12-18 months

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=34141

could it happen and MS go with Downloads only for the 720 ?

Lol it was all talk. Damage control. I'd rather take up shelf space than HDD space, as someone mentioned in a different thread.

yeah I know.. with hd dvd dead they had to move on to the next format to kill.... i mean develope and with all the big talk comeing from them I just think they should go with a fully DLC system. it just looks like the way they are going (not that I think its a good idea, it isnt)

It is the future. But you won't see downloadable Xbox 720 games. At the current time, it'd be next to impossible. They've never said such a thing, so it's being taken out of context.

Not yet. Technology to protect consumer rights who purchase DL content is not there yet to be mass adopatable, or they come up with a cheap way to back up/make your own physical media to compensate.

I think that microsoft will focus on download service and improve the marketplace. That doesn't mean that next xbox won't have some kind of disc drive.

Original xbox had dvd drive but MS didn't really focus on it.

i wouldnt mind seeing digital game downloads for the next xbox.

but they are gonna have to have some kind of super new HDD that can hold at least 10 TB of data and it'll have to be cheap to build.

thats the only way movie and gamedownloads can move forward. if i cant have a hard copy i at least want a copy stored safley on a HDD for as long as i want it there.

Downloads are the future, specially for small developers. If you can transfer data fast through the internet, why the need for physical media?

O man would Gamestop be pissed if that happened. That would be getting rid of the middle man. I see it very unrealistic because within the next 10-20 years games will become bigger and bigger while our government(well at least the US) refuses to update the internet system.

Once they figure out a way not to piss off the retail outlets, you can bet your ass everybody is going DD. It's the perfect way to stop Gamestop and other second hand stores from making money off of their property without them getting a cut.

Trust me, THEY ALL want to do it.

Me and my buddy talked about this. We think the future IS downloadable games, movies, EVERYTHING. 1000gigs is not going to be expensive come 5 years. Heck, it's not even that expensive at the moment. The "disk" era is nearing it's end..

Gaming companies might love it... The lack of the need of publishers = EA becomes nothing for the companies that it doesn't own, but publishes for. The will also be cost effective, give decent rates to the consumer, and also make more profits because of the lack of the need to create hard copies.

Hell yes.. It is the future.. ITs a huge hit on the pc.. And countries are already increasing their internet infastructure to run even faster then ever.. Take into a ccount of preloads.. And you could have been playing Halo 3 at 12:01 am of its opening day by not waiting in line..

Not to mention we have things in the terabytes, and flash cards are becoming amazingly immense in size...

Have you not used it in awhile or something because now it kicks ass. Yeah the unlocking for HL2 or whatever was stupid and I hated it at first too. But now it's an easy convienent way to buy tons of games and have them run under a unified friends list and such.

how is it impossible? game on steam will be done if you leave it overnight.

your talking as if hdd space is scare, 500gb of hdd space and you don't care about 10 gig games, anyway steam has a great way of keeping sizes down, hl2 ep1 and 2 use only around 300mb if you have the original hl2. game on hdd is much more conventet than dozens of cases wasting shelf space

steam has it all sorted, but other ones aren't that great yet, linking game to your account works much better than activations

steam owns the dd world, and retail sales can't match it anymore. its awesome keeps all your games up to date, lets you easily jump straight into the game with a single click as well as having friends and servers lists

why do you care, you get next to nothing for old games anyway
