If sony just dropped the Price of the PS3 by $100.00 and i do mean both the 20 gig and 60 gig, then they would definitly win this.  Think about it.. If that where to happen, that would put the 20 gig at only $399.99, the same price as the 360.. That would definatly mean that the PS3 would be the better buy because it would be the same exact price as the 360 only it would come with a built in blu ray player, HDMI, still free online, same size Harddrive as 360. And the 60 gig version would only be $100.00 more at $499.99 and for just a extra $100.00 more than the 360 it would come with still a blu ray player, built in wireless, 60 GIG harddrive 3 times the size of the 360s and built in camera card readers.

Come on sony, your already losing $200.00 on each console, whats another $100.00 and besides, you make it up with software sales. They already have the great games that are coming out this year that will sell really well.. Lair,Heavenly Sword,WarHawk,Eight Days, Killzone etc not including Motorstorm and resistance which are already out and also not including the great multiplats such as the EA games, Oblivion etc. Honestly the PS3 itself is a great console and sony makes amazing games, the only thing thats holding gamers back is the price and I Really think that a $100.00 price cut would do the trick.

Hypothetical situations are useless. That's the same as me saying "Sony would win if an army of flying bears swooped down from the sky, destroyed Microsoft and Nintendo, and ate all of  the honeys." Unless your hypothetical situation has some factual basis, seeing as there has been no indication or sign of a price drop in the forseeable future, it doesn't make sense.

Exactly. Honestly I actually own the 20 gig version, had it since launch and works like a dream to this day. I do have wireless in my house but i choose to go wired because you just cant beat the reliablity of a wired connection. But yea, I love my 20 gig. Infact if sony was smart, they would drop the price by $100.00 and try to push the 20 gig more for the same price as the 360 it would definitly sell like hotcakes, I also think the 60 gig would sell really well with a $100.00 price cut. Heck id spend $100.00 extra just for wireless alone if i used it

Im just saying hypothetically speaking. It would make sense that they do drop the price by 100 come holiday season, By that time production costs would have lowered and they would have sold plenty at the price point they have now where it wouldnt hurt them as bad, I actually see a $100.00 price cut happening this holiday season

What's another $100? Well, say Sony sells 250k units worldwide a month, a reasonable estimate given NA and Japanese sales. 250k units x $100 = $25 million. $25 million/month x 12 month/year = $300 million/year This is $1 million in $100 bills. You're asking Sony to throw away about 25 of these per month, about 300 per year, all for the sake of making more money. Doesn't make much sense economic, does it? Then again, neither does anything with the PS3.

I think it will happen in September before GTAIV and right around Halo3. They are going to reduce the manufacturing costs quite a bit I presume and they will take on further losses to stay competitive with the 360. Hopefully , Sony can add $50 to early adopters' PSN store wallets as a sign of good will.

I don't think we will see any 20 gigs this year at all , but I think they should start releasing them at the beginning of 2008 and see how it goes.

No i Disagree. Whats 100 bucks? a game is like 64 dollars so really 100 dollars more or less isnt really anything at all. you buy the PS3 at the original price and then you dont drive your truck for 2 weeks. thats it 100 bucks.

The funny thing is, the 360 and especially the Wii are in a much better position to drop the price right now but they aren't too willing either.

Only way this could work is if MS doesnt drop the 360's price by 100$ this fall. With GTA and HALO out soon and a potential price cut Sony would do good to not take them head on.

If Sony were to have a $100 price drop its very likely MS would soon follow with a price-cut of their own. Thus keeping the price difference between the two platforms basiclly the same as before.

Would never work because:

  • Sony is already losing an estimated $200-300 on each PS3 manufactured. Sony is already in major financial trouble, they can't afford to lose any more on each console, especially when there aren't enough good games/good BR movies for them to make their money back on licensing yet.
  • As soon as Sony drops the PS3's price MS will drop the 360's price by as much if not more, and a $199 core 360 is going to be very attractive, especially when compared to a $400/$500 PS3.

"making money" would have to take a backseat for just a little while. Sony didn't have to give away all of those Bravias for the European launch did they ? No they give back , and in turn the customers will give back (blu-ray movies and in this case downloadble items in the future when they get people hooked in)

most people don't care about all the ps3's futuristic features (for the millionth time), they want it to play games. besides, all anyone hears of ps3 is bad news, meanwhile 360 is still remembered as that console that started the madness this gen. besides, sony can't do it or else they would have already, they do put a little thought into this contrary to popular belief.

Sony "giving back"+Consumers in turn "giving back"= Sony making money. Simple corporate logic. Sony is already loosing too much on the system manufacturing to be generous in any way. Any of these percieved magnanimous acts are more publicity stunts than anything else. Lets take my original equation and state it as an algebraic law. X+Y=Corporation attempting to/actually making money. They end result will always be some sort of an attempt at capital. It's a bit naiive to think that ANY corporation acts out of service or generosity.

Sony will have no choice but to drop the price, and they will do so sooner than later, cause they are losing their fans to Wii and 360.  People are tired of the crap sony feeds it's "fans" and even die hard fanboys will eventually leave.

I myself have not figured out where the fury and fire is about this free HDTV crap they gave away in London.

I waited 38 hours, I didn't get squat but the system I should have never been there to buy anyway.

Actually assuming the ps3 does 400k a month, at a 340 USD loss (isuppli), thats 6 million a year (holiday sales). 6 million X 340 - 2 billion. thats their profits of 5/4 a year for their ENTIRE CORPORATION. GREAT LOGIC>

Not really. The Xbox 360 (and most likely the Wii as well) would have a price drop if Sony lower the price for the PS3. It would just make the Wii more attractive for casual gamers

dont count on it happening any time soon. and Microsoft could easily match that price drop. as a matter of a fact i think the 360 is due for one real soon, and when it happens the PS3 will look that much more expensive.

You cannot find the 20 gig PS3 anywhere. Sony is either making that console in extremely limited quantities, or they have stopped making it altogether.

Even if you go to Sony's online store and try to purchase a 20 gig PS3 you are given a message saying "This item is not currently available" blah blah. Point is, you can't even buy it directly from Sony.

RagingBull2584

Well honestly I don't agree.

First off the 20GB version is going to be or already is being discontinued. It already is just about everywhere I look here in Toronto.

And hte PS3 would need to be cut by $200 for me not $100. $100 would make it $599.99 Canadian or so and still with no games. I got my 360 with four games and a $50 price cut.  If it was $499.99 here in canada. same as the 360 premium with some games then yeah.

But also the 360 will then drop it's price maybe $50 or $75 or whatever and we'll be back as it was before with the difference.
And the Wii could probably shave some dollars off too so no the PS3 price cut hasgot to be more then just $100 for them to make a huge huge difference enough to say it will lead them to "win"

Indeed, if anything, I think it'll be Microsoft who drops price first.

  1. Compared to Sony, they can more easily weather the drop. Their financial situation is much more stable, and the 360 itself is at a much better margin compared to the PS3 (slight loss if not slight profit).
  2. Putting the 360 (especially the Core) closer to the Wii's popular price could help it draw at least some support from the budget-conscious.
  3. Doing it when Sony isn't ready could put it in the situation Microsoft itself faced last generation: a price chase that could keep the PS3 from ever becoming profitable in any reasonable timetable.

Hypothetical situations are useless. That's the same as me saying "Sony would win if an army of flying bears swooped down from the sky, destroyed Microsoft and Nintendo, and ate all of  the honeys." Unless your hypothetical situation has some factual basis, seeing as there has been no indication or sign of a price drop in the forseeable future, it doesn't make sense.bman784
Didn't Winnine the Pooh try that in one of the episodes ;) :P

360 would still blow the PS3 out of the water in terms of its library of titles and online play at that price. At least the PS3 has a little edge in hardware. :)

IF PS3 Price DROPS by just $100.00.. THEY Would lose $100.00 more on every console sold... Now I lost my crystal ball a few months back but Im pretty damn sure my prediction is a lot more reliable than yours :P price drop = feel free to hold your breath...

Any price drop of the PS3 will mean a price drop from both the Xbox 360 & Wii.

$299 looks a lot better than $499.

No,but it would help.

You see a game consoles kinda needs games to win,and that's what is ps3 is lacking in.

over here in the UK the thing has a prce tag of $1000 when you add a hdmi cable and a game, give or take ten or twenty. £500 is a world of pain for someone buying a console. I saw a guy walk out of the supermarket today in a bad mood, his credit card could not take the hit and he was declined. It needs to be down to £300 to take off, thats about $600. Until then it is in the twilight zone in europe. If it drops to that price I will buy one right now.

They'd hve to drop the price by $200 to convince me, the 360 was a tough sell at $400, and wasn't even a consideration for me until they had the games to back up the price point.

Only way this could work is if MS doesnt drop the 360's price by 100$ this fall. With GTA and HALO out soon and a potential price cut Sony would do good to not take them head on.Pro_wrestler
