If PS4 had BC would we still be getting that many remasters?

Maybe... but PS1 emulation should have been included since day 1, like the later PS3 units. I'm not sure the PS4's CPU is powerful enough to do PS2 games.

It's kinda hard to swallow the fact that you could have bought a game for PS1, then again on PS3, and then once more on PS4. The sleaze-factor is high.

Remasters are mostly multiplat games. And either way both consoles have their own for quick bucks. Ps4's got Uncharted remastered trilogy, Last of Us Remastered and XBone's got Halo Master Chief Collection and Gears of War Ultimate Edition.

Probably. They might not be as popular, but devs/pubs would definitely still try to monetize their older games.

@Salt_The_Fries: Sony has games this Fall/Holiday season though.. Gravity Rush 2 and The Last Guardian. Thats not including all of the exclusive PSVR games or exclusive 3rd party games.

Why would you pay $60 for a remaster that might even have worse graphics (look at Bioshock Collection) when you can get the game used on eBay or a local games store or flea market for $10 on the last gen systems. Nobody would pay for the remasters.

OP i think MS is also unknowingly at fault here also. Here's my reasoning as to why. When MS created a page on Xbox.com to vote on which games people would like to see become BC, it also gave devs the ability to see which games have a high demand from gamers and thus giving them the idea to create a shitty "remaster" and sell it to cunsumers at a higher rate then what a BC game would make.

As for Uncharted 4 > all games on the XB1, well that's opinion and again not fact. Because imo the Forza games beat everything on PS4, again not fact just opinion. I live in the real world where my personal opinion trumps any and all opinion Gamespot, IGN etc says about a game

Anyhow...

Maybe a good place to look at this is the PS4's PS2 classics library, or lack thereof. They have a working emulator on PS4 and they could have transferred users' PS2 classics acquired through the PS3 to be playable on PS4. When you think of it, BC in this way is just a functioning emulator running in tandem with the game's ISO file which the user has rights to; so if they wanted to, then upgrading the games for the PS4 is just a simple logistical task of getting publishers to sign off on it. They didn't even try. In large part I think they thought the modest $9.99 price point for each PS2 classic was asking too little for their new given success, so they justified the price hike by doing a resolution upping, which really isn't any more work than adjusting emulator settings as many who use the PCSX2 on PC do this. They also added achievements; this I feel killed the PS4's PS2 BC because it added more logistical hoops jump through, publishes couldn't just sign off now they have to go through ancient code and add achievements, and it upped the price making each purchase less of a compulsive buy for consumers and more in the territory of something people have to weigh the economic cost on more modern games that drop to a near comparable price. Really what they should have tried to do was just give everybody the same library, same right privileges for the stuff they bought, same price points on existing content, bring that whole library of goodness over for PS4 users and then build upon it; they didn't. Why they didn't? Maybe they got greedy. Maybe they thought they can make more money off up-rezzed PS2 classics with achievements. Maybe they really wanted to strongarm people into the pricey PS Now services.

Whatever the reason was, I think Sony's arrogance with their lead in the current gen console race was the biggest part. I think they felt they had so much of a market share lead and did so little to get it that they didn't need to do anything the competition was doing. They didn't need to support BC. They didn't need to add external HDD support.

Now, no PS3 BC on PS4 on the other hand, we pretty much knew that the Cell was just too much for any reasonable BC to manage with the big changes in the PS4's hardware design. I don't hold anything against Sony for that, they needed to put the Cell behind them. And really, remasters are really the only way to do last gen BC on PS4, and I really don't mind as they're bringing back some great games, and they actually look better (well, sometimes, there's some lazy ports there too but that's really on the developers/publishers). But, they could really mediate a lot of that lack of last gen BC through other BC support, and they're clearly not doing it. Heck, even with the disaster on the PS Vita side of things, they could have totally bolstered support of the medium through a kind of PSTV functionality with the PS4. Imagine if people with PS4s but no Vita or PSTV were able to play compatible Vita, PSP, and PS1 games on their PS4 through the shared online store. Imagine with the games they'd acquire through PS+ and just getting whatever that interested them, that they amassed a huge library of titles compatible on Vita, maybe at some point they'd be like "jeez, I'd like to play all this on the go", and actually went out and bought one. They could have done that with the right planning. Even if there was no hope for the Vita, Japanese developers still supported it with software, Sony could have looked out for their better interest by making those titles available to their 40+ million install base on PS4, thus creating a digital marketplace that's mutually beneficial to all, gamers, publishers, and Sony. Did they? No!

So, at this point, Sony's arrogance has resulted in them not being proactive enough with PS4 features to have really laid the advantages on thick. They could have had a robust selection of PS1, PS2, PSP & Vita titles to share with the PS4 ecosystem. They were too proud of themselves to think they needed to give users any meaningful value there. Instead they exploited and squandered that goodwill value they accrued to try to force people into a pricey PS Now streaming rental service, to start charging for PS+ and upping costs, replacing quality PS+ titles with indie shovelware, and not supporting BC in any meaningful way, by not focusing on creating a harmonious rights sharing between devices.

So, in summation, no, I don't think that even if full PS3 BC was possible on PS4 that they'd of bothered. They clearly have that ability now with the PS1, PS2, PSP/Vita libraries and can't even give us that on the PS4. Why would they focus on giving us PS3 BC on PS4 even if they had the ability to do so? As long as they were in the lead this gen with their old arrogant selves, that attitude that got them into the sticky situation the PS3 and they had to fight their way out of, I think things would be the same.

Some people are okay with buying improved versions of games they didn't play last gen instead of being stuck with the dated BC versions, we're not all living hand to mouth. As for no games... multiplats are not games anymore now?

PS4 has plenty of exclusives coming anyway, Xbox One has shit versions of games that will look and play much better on PC. PC and PS4 is all you need.
