Just think about that.

The Wii costs 249 for slightly better visuals than last gen.  If Sony were to release a Wiimote type controller for the PS2... not PS3, but PS2 then Nintendo would be as good as gone.  PS2 still sales like crazy and that would even boost sales more.  They could just make cheesy party games and something like, "Playstation Sports" and grab a lot of potential Wii buyers.

PS2 >>> Wii in terms of games and multimedia.  Can you play CDs on Wii?  How bout DVDs?

PS2 is on the way out.  It's too late to make a primary motion sensing controller for it.

Mr. Goldenglove, what you've just said is one of the most insanely "unsmart" things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

It would do aboslutly nothing.  In fact it wouldn't even sell.  Third party companies don't make games for controllers that are not bundled with the system.

Nope, Sony would have to continue to support PS2 then, and even then it'll still be roughly the same cost for a ps2 with limited to no support or a Wii that has full support and continues to improve.  Not to mention that most people would just consider it a bad attempt by Sony to "steal" ideas.

well if sony released a wiimote and nunchuck like device for the PS2 (without infringing on nintendos patents) on its own or with only the odd game that supports it then it would have absolutely no effect what so ever.

If they released one with many games that supported it, they advertised the snot out of it and supported it for the life of the wii then maybe itll have some effect (though it certainly wouldnt kill off the wii). however doing that could also eat into PS3 sales so it wouldnt be a very goo idea on sonys part...unless they abandon the PS3 soon......which they wont.

Well, a Wiimote controller for the PS2 wouldn't be standard. Everyone would just make games meant to be played with the Dual Shock. That, and Sony would find themselves in lawsuit hell rather quickly. (Oh, and I love the Billy Madison quotage used in response to the OP.)

Then they could just rebundle it in the PS2 with the controller and a game for 150 bucks.

That actually could work really well if they did it right. Relaunch a redesigned PS2 as PSInteractive or something and include the Eyetoy and a motion sensing Wii-mote like controller. Backwards compatable with all PS2 games and costs $199. Would probably do really really well if they had a few key titles to show off whatever motion system combined with Eyetoy. I mean redesigned Gamecube worked for Nintendo... Sony might as well give it a shot.

Well the Wii is keeping the PS2 alive because the hardware isn't that much better than last gen.  So that's why we continue to see the Wii get PS2 ports.  As long as that goes on then this idea would work.  If Sony released a controller like that then the devs would just have to develop for it.

 @ Nintendo groupies gettin' all bent out of shape by this thread.  It's just an idea.

How...

It's not as if the current games could be played with waggle and point control... or atleast work WELL... they would have to start with brand new games. Why would devlopers make new games for that when there is already the Wii. And why would you want a copycat if you could have the original? PS2 Sports. That would be AMAZING!

PS2 owners would just continue to play the current PS2 games with the Dual Shock 2.  Then devs would make new games using the new controller.  It's as simple as that.  Devs wouldn't mind making new games for the PS2 with a new controller because the Wii is proof that it will sell.  The can make some corny minigames for the PS2 to use the controller just like Nintendo has.

It's really not that hard to understand.

But that would, in no way, kill the Wii. The Wii was the first console to do this... a console without it standard won't beat out Nintendo. And not to mention Sony would be completely copying Nintendo (kinda like they already did with sixaxis). And by the time Sony was to do this, it would be too late. Lame. No, I'm sorry, I don't see that working well.

Not a FANBOY statement. I was a manticore last round and have Wii/360 right now. Have been waiting on a good enough game to drop 600. FAct is the sixaxis is a joke. It doesn't have the sensitivety of the wii and not one game has utilized effectively. It was Sony's replacement for rumble when they lost to immersion.

what's stopping them from doing that now? or years ago with the eyetoy

it cost me under 15$ and it came with a game

plus it doubles as a pc webcam with a mic...

Assuming Sony could even avoid infringing patents, such a move would likely hurt the PS3 more than the Wii if it were to have any real effect whatsoever.

they wouldnt have to develop for it though unless sony put it in as a requirement as part of the developement licence for the PS2 (doing that would upset alot of devs). when developing for PS2, its still better to develop for 120+million ppl who have a DS2 controller rather than develop for a few million who have the newer controller.

if they did it right and supported it properly (like having a newly packaged PS2 with the new controller for a lower price as someone above me said) then it could knock some wind out of the wiis sales. but they would really need the 3rd parties devs support and thars very hard when they can just develop a game on PS2 that uses the DS2 and reaches a customer base of 120+million ppl.

the advantage the wii has is that devs know that everyone has at least one wiimote and one nunchuck. devs are free to develop games on wii that use a GC or classic controller but they have no gurantee that the player will have them. this means that they limit their potential customer base if they develope exclusively for a traditional controller on the wii. this means that the vast majority of games on wii use the wiimote and nunchuck. PS2 is in the oposite situation. 120+million ppl have at least 1 DS2 controller. very few of them would have the new controller until some time had pass. this makes the new controller not very tempting for a dev from a gbusiness standpoint.

so at the mo it just wouldnt be a very goo idea for sony. they would have to move their first party devs away from PS3 stuff and put them on PS2+ new controller stuff. thats the last thing they need right now.

the idea is pretty sound though. essentially the wii is just 2XGC in terms of power and a new controller (though it does have a load of extras too).

Thats perfect logic. Make an add-on, with no games developed for it, and release it with no incentive to use it. I suppose thats why the EyeToy turned the PS2 into a powerhouse.  Yes. Makes perfect sense.

If you want to look at it that way, then the same can be said about the Wiimote.  Devs haven't really taken full advantage of that yet either.  Rumble doesn't effect actual gameplay IMO, but Sony will prolly bring it back anyway.

GoldenGlove

patents ftw? Also, everyone would notice the blatant ripoff, and it wouldnt halt wii sales, how would it grab potential wii buyers if its the same thing? Also, PS2 has been out for 6 years, so right now it has better game selection, doesnt take a genius to figure that out. And, i have a DVD player and an Ipod, i have no need for multimedia on my GAMING console.

PS2 >>> Wii in terms of games and multimedia. Can you play CDs on Wii? How bout DVDs?

patents ftw? Also, everyone would notice the blatant ripoff, and it wouldnt halt wii sales, how would it grab potential wii buyers if its the same thing? Also, PS2 has been out for 6 years, so right now it has better game selection, doesnt take a genius to figure that out. And, i have a DVD player and an Ipod, i have no need for multimedia on my GAMING console.

I'm sure Sony can make something to resemble it without breaking the law.  Some of you people are so naive.

If they bundle it with an AAA addictive game, then maybe.

You do realize that it would also hurt the PS3, right?

Again, at best it would be something of a kamikaze move for Sony - sacrificing the PS3 to possibly put a dent in the Wii's dominance (assuming Sony could somehow miraculously get it beyond just being an unused peripheral - and then even just compete with the Wii).  I don't much see how drawing more developer support away from the HD consoles (especially the PS3) toward a Wii/PS2 combo would really help Sony out at all.

Actually, releasing a successful addon like that would hurt Sony far more than it would help.

The PS2 is holding back the PS3 and supporting the Wii more than anything else. If Sony could make its own successful controler, I think you'd find more 3rd party developers making Wii games, since it will be an easy port to the PS2.

If the PS2 were killed off, then if a developer wanted to make a Wii game...then it becomes riskier since it's harder to port, which would reduce the number of Wii games.

Sony's best bet is to support the PS2 until this holiday when its major games come out for the PS3, then pull the plug for support. Then the PS3 will have more compelling reasons to purchase it over another console.

dont liston to these guys, this woldnt hurt ps3 sales, wii is not in direct competion with the ps3

think, if you bought a wii for 249 were you really considering buying a ps3 for 600, NO!
