[QUOTE="osan0"]well if sony released a wiimote and nunchuck like device for the PS2 (without infringing on nintendos patents) on its own or with only the odd game that supports it then it would have absolutely no effect what so ever.
If they released one with many games that supported it, they advertised the snot out of it and supported it for the life of the wii then maybe itll have some effect (though it certainly wouldnt kill off the wii). however doing that could also eat into PS3 sales so it wouldnt be a very goo idea on sonys part...unless they abandon the PS3 soon......which they wont.

Well the Wii is keeping the PS2 alive because the hardware isn't that much better than last gen. So that's why we continue to see the Wii get PS2 ports. As long as that goes on then this idea would work. If Sony released a controller like that then the devs would just have to develop for it.
 @ Nintendo groupies gettin' all bent out of shape by this thread. It's just an idea.
they wouldnt have to develop for it though unless sony put it in as a requirement as part of the developement licence for the PS2 (doing that would upset alot of devs). when developing for PS2, its still better to develop for 120+million ppl who have a DS2 controller rather than develop for a few million who have the newer controller.
if they did it right and supported it properly (like having a newly packaged PS2 with the new controller for a lower price as someone above me said) then it could knock some wind out of the wiis sales. but they would really need the 3rd parties devs support and thars very hard when they can just develop a game on PS2 that uses the DS2 and reaches a customer base of 120+million ppl.
the advantage the wii has is that devs know that everyone has at least one wiimote and one nunchuck. devs are free to develop games on wii that use a GC or classic controller but they have no gurantee that the player will have them. this means that they limit their potential customer base if they develope exclusively for a traditional controller on the wii. this means that the vast majority of games on wii use the wiimote and nunchuck. PS2 is in the oposite situation. 120+million ppl have at least 1 DS2 controller. very few of them would have the new controller until some time had pass. this makes the new controller not very tempting for a dev from a gbusiness standpoint.
so at the mo it just wouldnt be a very goo idea for sony. they would have to move their first party devs away from PS3 stuff and put them on PS2+ new controller stuff. thats the last thing they need right now.
the idea is pretty sound though. essentially the wii is just 2XGC in terms of power and a new controller (though it does have a load of extras too).
