Because I hear a lot of people here saying how Sony is in financial trouble and it would be the end of them if they took this approach.

The PS3 has been successful, and if they just followed a good business plan (don't overprice it, don't put it out a year after the 720, don't put in so much tech they lose money on it for every one sold, etc.) then they'd be dumb not to do that. They have a good following and a ton of first party titles, plus its pretty much been confirmed they're working on it along with Microsoft.

Besides, if Microsoft gave up after the first Xbox was such a massive bomb, they wouldn't have had the success they got with the 360. Same with Nintendo and the Gamecube not doing great, and in both those cases their console did significantly worse then Sony's, so I doubt Sony would quit gaming when its the thing they're doing the best at.

It'll be powerful enough, what do you mean by really powerful?

I think Sony will do it it, but they wont make it overly complicated like they did with the PS3, that was really it's downfall. It would have won from the outset, if it wasn't as complicated, because all the developers from the PS2 era would have naturally moved on to the PS3.

And they need to stop using the console to Trojan horse technology, they can't afford that now.

It will be powerful in comparison to what exactly? Kettle, Toaster? Will it be more powerful than a PC?

I think power won't be the determining factor in the next-gen consoles.

A lesson from the PS3 is that many people are not going to buy a console costing more than £400. Sony should be smart enough to price the PS4 lower than that. £300 - £350 is fine but not over £400! PS4 will of course be getting tons of games unlike the Xbox.

As a PC gamer, I'm not going to spend too much for a console as I feel upgrading the graphics card and stuff in my PC are more worthwhile investment.

The PS3 lost sony most of their profits from the PS1 and 2 they can't afford to release another overpriced console.

I imagine that it'll be fairly powerful but definately not cutting edge. If they release in 2014 with tech comparible to a desktop PC costing around $800 to $900 today. It'll be a meaty beastie and should still be reasonably priced. Maybe $400 (depending on how much money they plan on making of each unit sold). Still there's a lot of problems with heat to overcome before they can put that kind of tech in a PS sized box. There are of course decent laptop chip sets available but they are generally much less powerful than desktops in the same price bracket.

Absolutely no point in anybody dreaming that it'll be top of the range cutting edge hardware, firstly it would be way too expensive and secondly it will not fit under your TV, there's a reason PC desktop cases are generally quite large.

Anybody with half a brain can see Sony needs money badly. They released a fugly, cheap ps3 and raised the price!!!! That sounds like a money issue to me. So releasing a powerful, expensive ps4 isn't going to happen. It will be a middle of the road when it comes to power and price. The whole industry has learned a lesson from Sonys pricing disaster. I don't see MS releasing a expensive console either, and obviously Nintendo stayed away from a high price point as well.

I honestly dont know what any of these companies should do... predicting the next gen is not easy... i vote for making adequately improved consoles with new ip and not raking people over the coals in price... pretty much the opposite of the ps3 launch is what they should do.

A powerful system means that it will cost more to develop, which will in turn mean that the price of the console will go up and possibly be over the $400 benchmark so that they can see a profit. So to put it short with Sony's financial situation at the current time, if Sony releases a powerful console, Sony Gaming Division will die.

Sony cannot afford to bring out a landmark console that is more risk than reward, there company as a whole is down across the board so money cannot be thrown around as easily as Microsoft may be able to do it. Hate to say it but if Sony want to bring out the most powerful system than they better have a ace up there sleeve or Microsoft and Nintendo are going to take them to the cleaners.

I think I will stick to my prediction that Sony will put alot of their eggs in the basket that is the PS4, basicly like it is going now, Sony will go away (as we know it) and end up selling life ensurance or something like that.

So in a bid to attract alot of people to the next PS, they will (and likely can) not settle for something that is not fairly powerful.

But saying that it will not be powerful, and saying that it will be what some people on these boards think it will be capable of, are two videly different things.

In alot of ways I think that the PS4 will make or break Sony, or atleast alot of sections in Sony, if it sells well, it gives Sony a much needed foot in the door for alot of their branches, it might give them a steady flow of cash, if it fails to live up to expectations however, if it is less powerful then the competition (by a natocible margin) has a worse UI, or have too many technical glitches, then the money invested in the PS4, even now miniscule, will hurt Sony ALOT.

Basicly they can not afford to fail at this point, and it is not even a joke. They litteraly can't.

How do you know the PS4 is getting tons of games while the next Xbox is getting none? Can you deduce this from PS3's incredible holiday lineup of PS All-Stars and LBP Karting and the 360's measly lineup of Halo 4 and Forza Horizon?

Sony needs to abandon this "premium product" crap, and go back to their PS2 mentality: making a console that's more affordable but more than decent for its price range.

From what i have been reading on GA the xbox 720 will probably have a 68XX GPU or a 7XXX with 68XX performance. The PS4 is rumored to have a 79XX or a 8XXX with 79XX performance,in both cases if they use the newer model with similar performance to the older one,it wold be done to keep the heat down and power consumption as well, the 720 is say to have more ram but slower, the PS4 to have less but faster... The Durango kit flying around the net has already been confirm to have a 68XX GPU. There is no case in using a 68XX GPU on a dev kit if you will have a 79XX or better performance, because the 79XX is already out for a while now,so if they are using a 68XX on those kits is probably because that would be the final silicon or close.

Lets see you just compare 2 new PS3 franchises vs 2 old last gen MS franchises, you just make his point even more valid dude.. Also he wasn't talking about quality it was very clear he was talking about quantity, but hey the PS3 already got twisted metal and starhawk, and Ratchet is also do for release this year. So you see is 5 PS3 games this years vs 2 from MS,i guess his point was make very clear by your post.

I hope theyy realize that they'll never be able to create a system that isn't outdated affter 3 years. So instead of focussing on useless power they should focuss on stuff that matters. Nintendo did a good job with the WiiU

Twisted Metal and Starhawk are both mediocre. Ratchet will be great as always (although I wish they'd make another mainline game like ACIT) PS Allstars has a very dissapointing roster so I'm pretty skeptical of the game, LBP has a great community so I'll probably pick up LBP Karting, which isn't a new franchise, it's a spin off. Even your pod looks the same as LBP2.

The point is, the PS3 doesn't have this massive lineup of high quality games this year. It has a few good retail games like PS Allstars and LBP Karting, along with a few great PSN titles like Journey and Ratchet. But to say that the quality of the lineup is miles better than the 360 is very ignorant, especially if you're saying the 360 is getting none.

As I've said before; if Sony fill it with a lot of "useless" junk it should be possible to make a powerful console to a reasonable price. A lot of what the PS3 offered back in 2006 is now standard components.I mean, a big HDD, built in wifi and a bluray player. They can then proceed to release sequals to games made popular in this gen and have them as launch titles. One of the big issues with the PS3 at launch were it's "mediocre" launch titles compared to the Xbxo 360, which had Gears of War followed by Mass Effect and other good games.

Oh i don't care if you think the games are mediocre or not,you people think Uncharted is mediocre to and is the highest rated game between the xbox and PS3 this gen on gamerankings. Hes post was about quantity not quality,so 5 games vs 2....Hes point still stand.

Look. FACT

PS1 generation was good sold nicely, Nintendo 64 was off its game and did not sell as well, Sega was crazy with Saturn was a mess. But sales this gen were good still.

After that PS2 generation was GREAT. Sales for PS2 were very high as more people played Hardcore and casual. Increased sales was great for the whole games industry.

This gen sales are down, across the board. The games that do sale are standard not bringing anything new. Other games and game developers are closing faster than ever.

Next gen will be a disapointment. This gen will continue on for a while. Longer than Last gen. PS2 outsold Xbox in 2005 and did very well in 2006. After that sales droped. Games were made for both generations in the begining. For next gen this will also happen. But if the differences are not great then I do not see high sales like last gen or this gen.

By next year when next gen consoles go on sale this gen prices will drop to 200.00 with a huge libriary and if sales of the console continue the games will continue to be made at the very least for the first 2 years. But if sales are high then they will stay with this gen games for many non HardCore people.

Thus, unlike this gen the first to market will not be the leader unless they have huge leap in tech, which will cost a lot for the few Hardcore gamers still out there.

I don't think Uncharted is mediocre. In fact, Uncharted 2 is my second favorite game this generation. Because I think Starhawk and Twisted Metal, two games the media also believe are mediocre, are mediocre, that makes me think the same about Uncharted? Man, you're delusional.

Remember when Sony said they wont release PS4 until there is a "signicicant leap"?

Well my question is if they do release a really powerful console do you think that would be bad for Sony?

Because I hear a lot of people here saying how Sony is in financial trouble and it would be the end of them if they took this approach.

ShoTTyMcNaDeS

I wont believe it just like I didnt believe in all the BS Sony said the PS3 was capable of. Lets see, 4D gaming?? NOPE! ALL games run at native 1080p?? NOPE!!

TRUE Sony was in such a HURRY to launch their turd that it fell WELL short of expectations!!! The PS3 IS GIMPED!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sony should have WAITED!!! why ....

  1. bettter bluray (when launched they had a hard time with materials, parts so it cost More) 2X is crap 4X or higher would have been a lot better and very low or no LOAD TIMES!!!!
  2. CPU was gimped 7 spus at 3.2 Ghz?!!! should have waited and gotten a better Cell. All 8 cells working at 4.2+ GHz
  3. and WORST of all was the tacked on GPU!!! Nvidia?!!! Give me a break. MS did not dump them because they were great!!!! Sony could have gotten a BETTER ATI chip than Xbox if they waited.
  4. 512MB of memory?!! sad joke again more memory for less $$$ 1GB at least if Sony waited.

IF Sony did not just try to worry about compeating with Xbox 360 PS3 would have launched when ready in 2007 or 2008 at the latest. With a MUCH better console at the same price or LESS!!!

PS3 did not crap out due to 1 year after!!!!! look at the sales numbers for Xbox 360 not good at all. So if Sony had waited and had the better console LIKE THEY CLAIMED then they could hve made up the sames in NO TIME at all. BUT NO they launched with a GIMPED TURD and look what happned!!!

Games better be running at 1080p native... I'm tired of all these ultra low native resolution games on consoles, I tried played MOHW on X360 just to get an idea of what the game is like and I could barely see anything because the image is upscaled from what could easily be mistaken for a native resolution of 240p. Arcade games, fighting games, etc. don't seem to suffer from this however but I'd like if visibility was less of an issue for 3D games on consoles, I think a reasonable native resolution for games would fix a lot of that.

why'd they even do that when the PS3 has centuries worth of potential left under its hood, 'cause you know that PS3 is comprised of artifacts from the ancient but advance civilization of Atlantis and parts recovered from the Roswell UFO crash, developers just haven't tapped its hidden secrets and powers that'll put the discovery of the Higgs boson to shame

Yeah sony should have waited until now to release the PS3 like Nintendo did, what about the xbox 360 super RROD problems thanks to be ultra rush, the CPU on the xbox 360 is even crappier. But i am curious what CPU was better than Cell on 2006 that could have go into the PS3 without breaking the bank even more.? Hell by that time dual core CPU were starting to catch on,the PS3 one was 1 core 7 working SPE,it was so great that it actually help the PS3 beat a console graphically that has a way stronger GPU,how many times you see that on PC.? Actually MS dumped Nvidia because of pricing not because of weak GPU we all know Nvidia make some very capable GPU,they are just to damn expensive. In fact the PS3 launch date was 2005,early 2006 it was delay do to blu-ray not been ready,if it was ready on 2005 it would have go on sale that time, sony release a PS console every 5 years or little more, not every 7 or 8 in fact this gen is the one that will last the longer without a new console, the PS1 release on december 1994,and the PS2 in March 2000 just 5 years and 4 months, the PS3 release on November 2006 because of a delay 6 years and 8 months after the PS2.

The GPU inside the next 2 consoles should be able to hold 1080p 60 FPS without problems,is when developers start to push the consoles that they run into problems, they can't get decent speed at ultra good looking games, they just lower res drop AA and cut frames.

[QUOTE="Heil68"]I'm buying it no matter the price, day fuking 1. It will be my first ever launch console. It's gonna be SICK. TheDidact
I'm guessing you didn't buy the PS3 at launch because you were 5 at the time.

Naw, I didn't know just how big a juggernaut the PS3 was going to be. In hindsight, i should of bought it day 1 too. Lesson learned.
