Let's say Nintendo took a break and didn't make any games or systems until now.  So the SNES is released today and the same games that were released then are going to come within the next 5 years.  Would the SNES library beat the 360 and PS3 on gameplay alone?  Would the launch of Super Mario World for the very first time beat Resistance?

That is a tough question... as yes those games are classic, however does Metal Gear stand up the the current line up of Metal Gears... same with Final Fantasy's.

I will say Super Mario World is still the best Mario game Nintendo has ever done, in my opinion. Hands down.

But I wouldn't buy it over the XB2 or PS3.

I would buy it to compliment them... as the games just aren't as full filing.

They were good... yes... but apart from 6, I don't think any of them compared to the ones you find today. Especially with the greatness of FFXII

It wouldn't have the rep. to make it in todays market. What makes it so great today is what it was in the past and the fond memories that were built upon it.

I personally like the old school FF's just as much if not more than the old ones. FFV and FFVI were both amazing games and lead right up to FF's pinnacle, FFVII.

Still, if it was a totally new console with Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, SMW, and all that other great stuff, I would definitely consider buying it. I'm no graphics wh**e, but the HUGE difference in graphics would definitely make me think about it.

Absolutely not. Snes games are great and all but if you play old games and then play recent ones it's a no brainer. You'd have to be a total fanboy to pick Snes over 360/PS3.

SNES would DECIMATE the pretty boy new consoles nowadays, you're talking schoolboys (ps3,xbox360,wii) Vs a hardcore thug man. SNES games and their gameplay is the most fun S.h!.t EVER. WoW can't even match that.

The video game world would be a VERY different place had Nintendo never released the SNES and thus any subsequent systems that have been on the market. So there really is no determinable way to answer this question. Its like asking "If cars didn't exist until today would you still buy one? Would they be better than trains?"

For 42 dollars, and an awesome library, not to mention the ability to increase specs by integrating extra Ram and graphic accelerators, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
( that price is on amazon. They actually do sell those)

Seeing as I bought one for myself when I barely made any money, I can't see why I wouldn't buy one now that I do have money. And, the old Final Fantasies don't just stand up to the new ones, the old ones blow the new ones completely out of the water.Jandurin

No. If Nintendo was only now comming out with SNES technology and games, it would flop harder and quicker than the Virtual Boy. Same goes if Sony was only now comming out with PS1 technology, or Nintendo was only now comming out with N64 technology. It just doesn't work when there are systems that are light-years beyond them to compete with.

Well... without the SNES, SEGA would have been utterly dominant. That means we'd be playing with controllers that don't have shoulder buttons or analog sticks (at least not as early as we did), and we'd be playing completely different sorts of games. Also, odds are, we may have seen a greater lifespan for the Saturn (or whatever the SEGA console would have been called) since there would not have been any competition from SONY. We may have seen Shenmue way back in 1997 on the Saturn! Also, Sonic Xtreme would have come out. Man... everything would be completely different!

As much as I like the Playstation 3 I would have to say YES I would buy the SNES over the PS3 if it was never released until today. I had way too much fun with Super Mario World and the many, many, many great titles for the system.

No, if the SNES was coming out now or starting its lifespan now why would I buy it. People are thinking about all the old and great games that were on SNES, but they wouldnt be out at the beginning of the consoles lifecycle. And if it got more popular then 360 and PS3 then they could easily have made those games on them as on SNES, or should I say even easier. If you mean, would I buy a SNES instead of 360/PS3 and knowing that all those great games were comming that did come for SNES, then I do have that option now, I could easily buy a SNES and games on e-bay. Just because it was released a long time ago dosent mean the option isnt there anymore.

I guess if it was $150 for the system and every game but not just the system. Besides, the PS4 and Xbox720 will be out before any of the really good games launched. (FFIII, Chrono Trigger)
