If there is one game that deserves all of the praise it gets...

IMO, it is Portal. Amazing soundtrack, it is lol funny, fun and original.

It's like a mix of Halo, Half-life, STALKER, with Crysis-level gfx. It's got it all.

And Lair...don't even get me started.

Super Mario Galaxy, and a ton of other games.

But yeah, Portal was a great game while it lasted. I beat it twice in one day. If it was longer, I think I probably would've liked it more than Half-Life 2.

It takes skill to hate most games that come out.

Besides the obviously broken games (Vampire Rain, I am looking at you! ), most games are at least entertaining in some way, and there have been only a handful of games I have played (that were not broken, as in they played like intended) in the couple of decades I have been gaming that didn't merit some kind of praise, if for nothing else than being entertaining.

People who claim that great games are average or trash may want to set the bar a little lower, IMO, as I can guarantee its more fun finding the good and fun in games than seeking out the bad.
