If Wii is only for young and old folk, why is Brawl its fastest selling game?

A quick look at some of the best selling Wii titles goes to show that that this myth that the Wii is primarily purchased for old people and children is busted

Galaxy, Brawl, RE4 Wii edition, RE UC, Red Steel, Guitar Hero

I'd say the cold harsh truth is that the Wii is primarily being purchased by the 120 million ex playstation fans who jumped overboard after PS3 tanked

you are quite annoying at times with your 'wii rulz' topics

but anyway, its not. 20 million is far byold 'young and old folks' 20 mil. sold and it still sells out in a day

wii is for everyone

more than the ps2 was

the wii is the king

You're out of your mind if you think that all the PS2 userbase will "migrate" to the Wii.

Maybe not all, but a significant amount will and has. The PS2 was the casual system last gen and the Wii is the casual system this gen.

I agree with your final assessment. The "120 million" PS2 fans are not Sony fans like Cows think. I sold MANY ps2's as a DVD player personally. When the ps2 came out, DVD players were just starting to take off and they were almost the same price as a PS2. In fact Sony's main DVD player was the same price as a ps2.

That said, I do not believe Galaxy and Brawl are doing anything to help you seperate the Wii from it's kiddy image.

The idea that new users make up any significant part of the Wii's userbase is a myth and I feel sorry for the people who were fooled into thinking it.

I agree but games like No More Heroes and Fatal Frame IV will atleast help to lose that image if they sell well, No More Heroes did sell kind've good even with know marketing in North America. Fatal Frame IV is published by Nintendo and they are lending Developer support and marketing the game.

First of all, I haven't heard that the Wii was for young people and old people only. Some people may claim that, but as far as a respectable news source I've never heard that.

Nintendo did make an effort, from a Nintendo exec interview I read, to bring in non-traditional gamers with the Wii. But that doesn't mean traditional gamers don't like it.

HOWEVER, the reason I'm responding here is your comment that "the PS3 tanked".

I just bought a PS3 and a Wii a couple of weeks ago. They are two very different gaming systems; they each deliver a different gaming experience and have different features...in a way, I don't see them directly competing...it's almost as if this generation of consoles has fragmented the console market...it's more developed...

We have the HD camp, who own either 360s/PS3s, and then the Non HD camp, that would most likely buy a Wii...

The Wii has a huge novelty appeal...I've met people who would never have bought a console in the past who bought the Wii just because it is so unique. These people would never consider a PS3 or 360, most likely.

At any rate, for the past two months at least, the PS3 is GAINING momentum, if anything.

http://blogs.pcworld.com/gameon/archives/006638.html

The victory of Blu Ray over the HD DVD format will probably only help PS3 sales going forward.

Nobody knows the future...obviously...so anything could happen. I just have a hard time believing any of the big 3 consoles...360/Wii/PS3 have "tanked".

A console can only be compared to its predeccessor when determining its success or failure, and thus far, in every regard, the PS3 is a complete and utter failure when considering its the follow up to the PS2

Get your facts straight. Brawl isn't a kids game, but neither is it specificly aimed towards adults. Its for everyone, same as Mario Galaxy.

RE4 is a game I've experienced last-generation allready. RE UC is average at best. Red Steel is extremely bad game and you shouldn't even include that in your list.

Those elderly people and soccer moms never played games in the previous generations in the first place. Ex PS2 owners have most probably either bought a 360, or havent jumped ship yet to the next-generation.

Myself included. I'm a PS2 owner, and decided to jump ship to the 360 this generation. over 80% of my friends did the same.

The core audience of the Wii are mostly folks who love Mario and Zelda. Nintendo enthousiasts/supporters.

And PS3 userbase will grow once FF and GT hit the stores.

Nah, I wouldn't say its a faillure. Sony has very tough competition this generation. That wasn't the case last-gen. MS and Sony are pretty much struggling for the 2nd place. Fighting for exclusives etc etc.

From a business perspective, they were - Nintendo has stated as much. The only good thing about them (from a business perspective) were that they were profitable. However, those consoles lost Nintendo market share and industry influence.

The Gamecube was amazing last gen; it may not have had the sales but games like Metroid Prime, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Super Smash Bros Melee made it what it was, which was a success.

Maybe the console wasn't a success to Nintendo or to you because of the thought which is that sales make a console successful (i understand nintendo's view easily, but somebody else caring about sales to call it a failure?), but I'm sure many others that owned the console will agree with me that the Gamecube was a success.

enjoying or liking a console is completely different than a console being a business success. A point that is lost on most fanboys when they want and excuse to fall back on.

Wait wait wait...so am I a fanboy or are you just making the general comment?

I am just amazed by how many people on this board actual care about business successes and sales and all that to deem something that was great a failure. As long as the games were given to me, and the games I listed before were some of the best I played last gen, then I feel the console I played it on was a success. Sales mean nothing to me.

So yeah, the games go to where the sales are. Then you know what I do? I follow the games.

I'm not saying that Nintendo doesn't consider the GC and N64 failures. What I would really like to know is if you, as a gamer, do deem those consoles failures?

 at those who literally think a great majority of PS2 fanbased jumped on the Wii bandwagon.

You're either DELUSIONAL or DESPERATE to give the Wii some full credit.....for simply SELLING to many.

Here's a lethal dosage of reality........PS2 >>>>> Wii.......in games library and more DISTURBINGLY, in GRAPHICS

(perfect example: GT3 >>> Crusin' & GT Pro Series..........a 2001 game obliterating a 2006 & 2007 game. Now that's sad and they're all 3RD Party games)

When Wii surpasses the 120million + mark in this generation & garners good 3rd Party support, which I highly doubt and not by a billion light year long shot, I'll shut up.

Stepping into this thread is like going back 6 years...I thought we were past this. Nintendo's (sucessful) marketing has certainly put it all in the past. Newsflash, no one gives a crap anymore because people buy systems depending on how they are marketed to THEM, not to other people. If you buy a system (or anything for that mattter) based on how it is marketed to other people you should immediately hand over your wallets to someone who knows what they are doing...and coincidentally I'm taking donations.

Wow, that is some pretty pathetic spin right there, comparing a flagship title on one machine (with some of the best graphics that machine has ever produced) to a quick cash-in on another (with some of the worst graphics that machine has ever produced) and applying the result across the board.

Because of the same Nintendo fanbase that supported the Gamecube. Remember for awhile there the Gamecube and games were selling very well from the fan base alone. Just didn't appeal to other gamers or many casuals.

Plus from what I've played of Brawl (bought it 2 days ago) it's highly overrated.

We could apply the same criteria to the XBOX360 or the PS3...surely matching up to the PS2 numerically will be a sign of sucess, right? By that token the PS3 and 360 are already doomed :s

Yes it does, if you look at the current Wii games versus PS2 games. Give me 3rd Party games that actually BLOW some PS2 games out the water. I'm talking about games, not what the machines are capable of. Yes, on paper, Wii is powerful. But what does it say about its current crop of 3rd party shovelware?

A quick look at some of the best selling Wii titles goes to show that that this myth that the Wii is primarily purchased for old people and children is busted

Galaxy, Brawl, RE4 Wii edition, RE UC, Red Steel, Guitar Hero

I'd say the cold harsh truth is that the Wii is primarily being purchased by the 120 million ex playstation fans who jumped overboard after PS3 tanked

TBoogy

I agree with your final assessment. The "120 million" PS2 fans are not Sony fans like Cows think. I sold MANY ps2's as a DVD player personally. When the ps2 came out, DVD players were just starting to take off and they were almost the same price as a PS2. In fact Sony's main DVD player was the same price as a ps2.

That said, I do not believe Galaxy and Brawl are doing anything to help you seperate the Wii from it's kiddy image.

Yeah, I don't understand why Sony fans claim that most people that bought PS2 are hardcore... I know a few kids who bought it just for EA Sports and Star Wars games.

At the same time, I don't see why Wii haters claim that only "soccer moms and casual kids" buy the Wii.

There's a lot more diversity than most would think.

Why does it have to be 3rd party? Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros Brawl all look incredible.

PS2 had its fair share of shovelware (holy crap that rhymes extremely well...) too that looked absolutely terrible.

Wii is aimed at casual gamers and/or non-gamers.

If you're looking for third party graphics that beat most PS2 games, look at RE4 Wii - a game that had to be downgraded in order to be played on the PS2.

Just like the GC and N64 were both failures right?

From a business perspective, they were - Nintendo has stated as much. The only good thing about them (from a business perspective) were that they were profitable. However, those consoles lost Nintendo market share and industry influence.

I'm not talking in terms of business.
