There was an article and the writer was comparing the differences between the PS3 and XBOX 360, and when he came to the online section, he talked about things he liked and disliked about both PSN and XBOX LIVE. But there was a part where he was trying to explain his frustrations about not being able to find stuff he wants in the PSN store, in this case, he was refering to add on game content, such as DLC. Here's what he said...

On PS3 you can search for terms but navigating around the PS Store is not nearly as logical and uncomplicated as you would like.

For example, if you're looking for add-on content for a certain game there's no easy way to bring up only the items related to that game. Instead, expect to get dozens of search results for whatever keyword you search for. On the 360 Marketplace you can at least bring up whatever content relates to the game in question, although they've recently removed this from the 'My Xbox' row and put it somewhere else.

I had this exact same discussion with someone a couple of days ago, but I gotta tell you, if you can't find the add on DLC you want, you are clearly doing something wrong.

As I'm looking in the store, it's labled to where a 7 year old can find it. It reads, on the left hand side:

PLAYSTATION PLUS

NEW RELEASES

GAMES

VIEW ALL BY TITLE

DEMOS

ADD-ONS

MEDIA

THEMES & AVATARS

From there, If you want "Add-Ons", everything by the specific game in alphabetical order. How is that rocket science? Why would you even waste your time hitting a search button?

Clearly some people are doing something wrong....for real.

that's blog material

unless you want to scrap the whole thread and just use the article for a PSN vs. XBL thread.

I personally find that the playstation store is more organized and easier to navigate than the xbox marketplace.

It's much more organized in PSN, you can sort stuff by most recent, genre, type (demo, DLc, PS3 game, PSP game), and alphabetically... How could he possibly not be able to find something?

Wow. If navigating the PSN store is hard, I can only imagine what tying one's shoes must be like.

I didn't even know the PS Store had a Search Bar..

Seems completely useless as you said, everything is neatly organized on the left that makes everything very simple.

Why would you even use the search function? It would be like 20 button presses vs 3...

There are still some serious UI flaws in the PS store, mostly having to do with excessive confirmations. I understand asking "are you sure" before doing something, but does there have to be a modal confirm afterwards? Just put a non-modal message on screen saying if it was successful, and let me continue on instead of waiting for me to hit circle. This mistake seems to be all over the PS3's UI. Then there's the pain in the ass of re-downloading. Suppose you haven't played something in a while and want to re-download your content for it (I'm assuming you haven't thrown a 500GB drive in your PS3 here; even the 320GB in mine is filling alarmingly fast). The easiest way to do it is to go to the game's add-ons page, select each item individually, select download, and then back out and select another item. Why not just have a tree with everything and let me queue all DLC under a particular tree node with one button? And then there's the question of automation. Answer me two questions: why would I ever NOT want to background download something? The same bits end up on my hard drive, and I don't have to sit around waiting. And why would I ever NOT want to install something? What else am I going to do with it? Given the answers to those two questions, why not just automatically download and install any item I select without bothering me further? There's nothing that the user can do to meaningfully contribute to the process at that point anyway, so don't waste their time. Sony has cleaned up a lot of UI issues with the PS3, but they still have a lot more work to do.

I had problems with it myself when I first tried using it. There were labels that allowed you to sort, but it still wasn't pull up the game or information I was looking for. The other bad thing about it was it didn't include a demo for all of the games. So you couldn't always try before you buy like with XBLA. PSN navigation is not as easy as XBox Live. As long as you know the first letter of the game or demo, you can pull it up pretty quickly.

If anything, the search function is the worst part of the PS Store.

This guy clearly didn't know how to use the alphabet.

The PSN layout is great, there is no problem with it...I have literally no idea what that writer must have experienced, as it's all easily readable. Strange. I don't think I've ever used the PSN search bar ever, and I have probably $1000+ dollars of DLC content/games/RB songs.

Same goes for 360, although I liked the old XBLA store better, it's still fine in it's current form. I probably have $1000+ in XBL content as well. On Wii, I've spent around $500+ (VC, Wiiware).

The Alphabetizing on the PS3 demo's are as follows: A-C, D-G, H-M, N, O-R, S, T-Z, and 0-9.

I color coded it so it would be easy for you and others who don't understand how PS3 works.

I don't like the layout and they could do a better job of putting the new stuff up front. Other than that, it isn't any harder than XBL to navigate.

Why?

Is the American Alphabet a bit difficult to understand?

Is it your second language?

I think he's saying that on XBL the demos list is all on one big list. To me the small sections on PSN make more sense. The more demos you get over time, the longer that list is gonna take to populate. It's the same reason that by default threads on GS only hold a small number of posts per page.

That is exactly what I meant. I can be bored on XBL and just feel like browsing all of the games in a big list - choosing to download any demo that catches my eye. With PSN I have to go through the alphabet and then wait for that list to populate, whereas XBL is more a case of holding down the analogue stick and browsing :P It's mainly convenience so not that big an issue, but one that PSN lacks.

One important difference is that, last time I looked, the 360's list was text-based - the PS3's is large icon-based, with an option for a small icon and text. A purely text list is going to load a lot faster than a grid of images for the same number of items.

You can find what you want but that doesn't make it great, that's just meeting the basic requirements. And that's pretty much how I feel about the whole service, it's just ordinary. With the amount of users PSN has they could make a killing with a touch of creativity, but for some reason they don't want to put in the effort.
