If you have a 360, you don't need a PS3, or visa versa.

As much as I complain about the PS3 not having enough RPGs, I can't justify getting a 360 for one good reason: Opportunity cost.

The PS3 plays most of the games the 360 plays. There is only about a 30 game difference between the two consoles (Regarding only decently reviewed ones) and unless you like at least 10 of those exclusives yourself, it simply isn't worth it.

$200 can be, if you shop right, 10 games - or 8 games and DLC for several games you already own. In the case of buying a PS3 when you have a 360, it's only about $100 to put a bluray player on your laptop, so you're losing $300 in the exchange that you could spend on games, or bluray movies, even if all you want the PS3 for is a to play Bluray discs.

I just thought I'd make this clear to everyone who might be tempted by the new bundles that are available for the PS3 this week. Ask yourself if MGS4 and KZ2 are REALLY worth $300 to play before you buy them.

You don't "need" too have anything. Videogames are wants, not needs.

Heh, you guys are so caught up in the logistics. Of course I understand this, but my point is that with EITHER system there's plenty to do without the other.

I see your points. A great deal of the games you can play on both consoles, but I couldnt imagine NOT being able to play MGS4, Uncharted, Gears 2, Mass Effect 1, LBP, Killzone 2, Left 4 Dead, Lost and the Damned, inFamous, Forza Motorsport etc. It's those games that I enjoy that I would not want to do without so having both makes it totally worth it for me.

Almost everything can be addicting. You can get addicted to smelling glue or wet paint.

If someone gets addicted to videogames, it's their own fault for not having any self control.

You would be addicted to something you already have, hence not needing a PS3 because you're addicted to your 360.

The fact is, you're still $300 behind though. Sure, you could say, collectively, are these games worth (Cost of games) + $300/ (Number of Games) each. Even if matching the cost of the system is enough for you to justify it, If you pay $30 for each game for 5 games (Which you can, for all those titles you mentioned) That's only $150. Now, it's pretty easy to do the match the price of the system justification when you don't own one or the other, since you can include multiplats, but once you have one or the other, unless you have enough time to blow out all the games available to you that you're interested in really easily, you likely don't need the other platform.

TheElfChild

I dont understand your logic because different people have different opportunity costs, it depends on a variety of things.

People withabove average incomedo not have to make descions of scarcity over small things like this.

Just to remind you: Opportunity cost or economic opportunity loss is the value of the next best alternative forgone as the result of making a decision

Your title raises a good point. What needs to be drilled home however is you don't NEED a 360 and a gaming PC and a PS3. The 360 gets the best of all worlds.

You DO NEED a gaming PC if your going exclusive PS3.

So the 360s always got the edge, it's always got twice the punch the PS3 will ever have.

Not for someone with five figures worth of annual disposable income. Just shows how things can be relative. But the point is made. Someone not yet in the current generation will wonder how much it'll cost to get in one way over the other.

Even when you're making five figures of annual disposable income, $200 is a large amount to have in your savings to go toward other ventures, like your kid's college or a family vacation. Granted that $200 would represent a fraction of such costs, but the old cliche "A penny saved is a penny earned" applies. Only a fool would throw $200 away without good reason. Now, I have said, or insinuated, that there may be individuals with enough time to own both systems and have time to play all the exclusives from both systems, but chances are you're really not one of those people - especially if you're making any decent amount of money.

Don't try to make economic decisions for others.

That's like telling people to not eat at any restaurants/fast food places for 1 month....so they could save up $200 and get both.

Other factors may apply to restaurant going - you may be spending $200 a month on such food, but if your time is more valuable than the cost saved by not making the food yourself, then restaurant going can actually be saving you money. If your time isn't that valuable, then I would say you should probably avoid restaurants; you'll want that money for other things.

I would say if you're a PS3 owner then there really is every reason to pick up a 360.I mean not only is the 360 cheaper but it has a lot more quality and variety in its software library.

On the other hand if you're a 360 owner then teh PS3 is just to expensive and has too weak a library to justify purchasing one, especially considering the quality advantage the 360 has over it.

Basically if you're a 360 owner then you're good to go.Sadly the same cannot be said for people who have only a PS3.

And as for the BluRay player issue, with standalone players getting to the $200 threshold, it may be preferable in the long run to have them separate if there's more than one person at home, allowing people to game and watch movies simultaneously in separate rooms.

You don't "need" too have anything. Videogames are wants, not needs.

I'm sure you have wanted people to assume things at one point in your life too. I agree, the PS3 and 360 are too similar to own both. I do, but I can afford to have the few exclusives the other system offers.

Ps3= MGS4(enough to warrant a ps3 purchase for me imo) 360=halo 3(not enough to warrrant 360 purchase, but for some people it is)
