I definitely agree with the top three, but in a series like Metal Gear, there are bound to be some disagreements over the overall ranking.

Peace Walker over 2, & 4. Stop ranking games IGN.

For me its ground zeroes < mgs4 < mgs3 < mgs < mgs2. Haven't played the rest so cant comment. And I expect mgsv will slip in between 4 and 3.

@charizard1605: why not? Peace Walker isn't a good game and doesn't play nearly as well as 4, and 1 has zero gameplay elements that are good today. Maybe Twin Snakes but I've never played it.

4 has a travesty of a story but it has plenty of good gameplay moments.

I don't mind the ranking of the rest of it, believe me. Like I said, Metal gear is divisive, and outside of some constants (3 usually coalesces as the best game in the series by popular opinion), but the ranking of 4 kills me. it was just so... bad.

2 should be lower. It was the equivalent of 4 minus good gameplay. The less sneaking I've ever done in a mgs game.

imo 3>4>TTS>2>PW>1

MGS 3 is amazing. Was refreshing to play it, the storyline was also straightforward and easy to grasp.

Am sorry but coming from beating PW HD I'm gonna call that list bullsh*t. In no way in hell is PW a better game than MGS 2 or 4. Dont get me wrong, it was a fantastic game for a portable device but was it on a full fledged console from the start and it would be ranked among the worst in the series.

Personaly I would rank them:

3 > 4 > 1 > 2 > PW > GZ

GZ had the best gameplay but the lack of content puts it in last position. Oh, and it doesnt have any bosses either so that is in itself a big no

Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake is extremely underrated by the fans (that or most just haven't played it). It's nearly Metal Gear perfection outside of the swamp area.

MGS2 > MG2 > MGS3 > MGS1 > Ground Zeroes > 4 > Metal Gear

No, it was not. I think the fact the game was (severely) overrated by critics (wich I agree it was) put it on the line of fire from many gamers but the game was very good. It definitely had the best gameplay of the series at the time being, had memorable boss fights that cleverly were reference of MGS 1 bosses and still being quite different, gave us the most options to approach each scenario, etc, etc. Yes, the story was all over the place (and the marriage between johnny and Meryl was just... ergh) but when it comes to gameplay alone no one in their right mind can say it was bad.

Perfect! The only difference is I wouldn't rank GZ because to me its part of TPP, I think of it as the tanker level of TPP. :P

IGN nailed the top 3. The original MGS is still such a classic.

2 > 1 > 3 > PW > GZ > 4

MGS2 was great but so much backtracking and playing as raiden, plus the sniper mission prevents it from reaching that godly status MGS3 acquired. It's still a great game of course.

MGS4 polished that gameplay to almost perfection but Act 3 was terrible and act 4 was okay and act 5 was great especially the last parts. That Meryl and johnny half hour cutscene sucked ass though.

Thats definitely the right reason. No one has the patiente nowadays to play an old MSX game. As big of a MGS fan I am, I just cant be bothered to play it. I would love a remake of the 1st two games though but now that Kojima has left that probably wont ever happen

And yes, MG2 Solid Snake is definitely underrated. Many overlook it simply because of its 8-bit graphics, but its gameplay is excellent and the story is arguably just as good as MGS. It's the best 2D stealth game ever made, and still holds up very well compared to its 3D sequels.

Pretty good list - haven't played Peace Walker, but MGS3 is definitely the best, with MGS1 and MGS2 not far behind.

I'd rate MGS4 last from the ones I've played, still haven't managed to get into GZ its pretty boring so far.

MGS 4 gets way too much hate. I'm actually playing right now and it still stands its ground.

Its better than all the other MGS games not named MGS3. But lets hate it for interrupting with so many cut-scenes, while conveniently ignoring how intrusive MGS2 is, & that one had less gameplay than 4. Its the crazy world we live in.

Okay fair enough but he was also shadowing that game despite Platinum Games was in charge. I know, it's a spin-off but I would like to hear from Kojima if he like that game.

Don't get me wrong. Not trying to argue the legitimacy of the game. IGN list consists of games he was directly involved with.

If I'm not mistaken, Kojima was happy with Rising, he even wanted to see them work on a Gray Fox game.

MG2 is excellent, first time I played it was only about 2 years ago and had fun it's aged really good.

For me it would be something like. 4>3>1>PW>2

MGS2 will forever be my favorite. Followed closely by 3, then 1. 4 was good too but fell off completely after Act 2.

All I can say is MGS3 in the right spot. Sounds like a good thing I didnt play Peacewalker.

MGS1 will always be number 1 to me. With MGS4 number 2.

MGS3 > MGS4 > MGS2 > MGS1 > PW > MG1 > MG2

In the past I would of put MGS1 much higher but it hasn't aged well.

The calling out of MGS4 for cutscenes was mostly Xbox 360 fanboys bitter about not being able to play the game. When it was getting 10/10 yeah they were very very mad. That's where the whole "cutscene" shit came from. MGS2 had a lot... but it wasn't complained about... what was complained about 2 was playing as Raiden.. I remember some sites making fun of him having no shirt at one parts... the stupid xplay review for that game was so bad..

MGS has always had cutscenes, its part of what makes MGS. Xbox gamers last gen used it as a backlash.. Real fans loved MGS4. To me it goes right after 3, as 3 was incredible.

You will never have everyone agree to an OPINION but that's expected.

1. MGS2 (Was my first and after over 12 playthroughs, still my fave)
2. MGS3 (I cried at the end. It takes a lot for a game to do that)
3. MGS4 (Ties in most of the plot and had a satisfying conclusion)

The rest are all good but those 3 have a special place.
