Sounds very good so far, here's hoping the new dev pulls it off. :D

Assassinating Batman in Arkham Origins

See the videos in the link.5c5f992e3c7014420aceeda2bf4ebb0c.jpg?ito

It's not Year One, but it's close.

Whether in movies, television, comics or video games, when Batman needs a change of pace, creative teams tend to lean towards the iconic hero's formative years. That's precisely the case with Batman: Arkham Origins, just announced this morning for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC. Since the game's reveal, Game Informer's cover story has gone live, providing us with some critical new details in the next Batman adventure, due out October 25.

As previously noted, the Dark Knight will face eight assassins, including fan favorite Deathstroke, who have journeyed to Arkham City to kill him. We now know that Black Mask is responsible for putting a bounty on Batman's head, though exactly why will be a key mystery in the game's story. Also playing into the plot - Gotham City's acclimation to its rookie protector. Players will not only see a much more skeptical and potentially hostile Gotham City Police Department (aka the 'GCPD', which happens to feature a young Captain Jim Gordon), but younger and healthier versions of big bad guys like the Penguin - who apparently didn't always have the tail end of a glass bottle shoved in one eye.

Arkham Origins will feature similar gameplay to its predecessors, as new developer WB Montreal is very much intent on picking up where Rocksteady left off. That means perch-to-perch movement, gliding kicks and 'free-form combat' are all back. While the Montreal studio was free to develop its plot and new feature (like a 'Remote Claw', which allows you to target and pull two objects together), it leaned on Rocksteady for advice on technical and mechanical elements of the game.

Another new feature - quick travel via the airborne Batwing. Though not a controllable vehicle, Arkham Origins will finally eliminate one of the more tedious elements from Asylum and City, allowing Batman to move from point to point much faster than before - - provided he dismantles towers that jam his ability to call in his plane. (Unlike, say, Far Cry 3, these tower sequences will require a wide variety of skills and powers, including some that will have to be unlocked first.) It's a good thing Montreal is providing the Dark Knight with a quick method of transport - WB Montreal contends that Origins is nearly twice the size of Arkham City, adding an entirely new island, called 'New Gotham', to build upon the more familiar 'Old Gotham', which will still feature familiar locations like Amusement Mile and The Bowery.

The Montreal team intends to maintain the same world "density" despite doubling its size, adding ideas like 'Crime in Progress' (assist the GCPD and build your reputation) and 'Most Wanted' (track down non-assassin villains). In many cases these side quests will provide the upgrades to Batman's arsenal. These upgrades, combined with the game's existing XP system, funnel into the larger concept of the 'Dark Knight' system, which is basically the team's way of progressively adding more complexity and difficulty to Origins.

Origins will also put more emphasis on Batman's detective skills. Cases large and small will serve as a slower change of pace from action, allowing players to investigate crime scenes, gather evidence, analyze data and even return to those scenes with more information later in the game. Over time, as each case is solved, a full video narrative of the case will unlock, piecing together the crime.

Rich's most anticipated comic book storyline is 'Year Zero' in Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's 'Batman' series. Will there be any similarities to Arkham Origins? He hopes so. Talk about comic books, comic book movies and comic book video games with Rich on Twitter @RichIGN.

I don't get how anyone can say they will pass when all we have is a name and a picture of Batman and Deathstroke, and a different developer. The Wii U port of Arkham City was pretty good so I have faith in the dev.

Some people pass judgement way too fast it's like wtf bro.

"Arkham Origins will feature similar gameplay to its predecessors, as new developer WB Montreal is very much intent on picking up where Rocksteady left off."

I love both Arkham games but I don't want to tarnish the series by playing something thats just more of the same.

Would it kill other gamers to buy something different instead of what is safe and familiar?

If lots of people buy this, which they very well might, we could end up with a Batman game every year or two.

One thing Call of Duty has taught us is that gamers become very complacent about trying new experiences.

Its the reason why the new Thief game is being "tweaked" to appeal to the masses.

Dude, of course it's going to be similar in gameplay. What did you expect? You want an Angry Birds revision of Batman?

Please don't affiliate Assassins Creed with Arkham. Assassins Creed is not worthy of Arkham's god tier status.

That would be Rocksteady's Batman game.

Don't see how that stops them from making this for the next consoles.

Going back to the game, I hope they work on the combat, it's too shallow.

Being Batman's first array into next gen I don't think anyone else besides Rocksteady has the privelage to do so.

And the combat is the best part of those games, all it needs is a little more polish and more fight animations.

They just need to make it harder. Faster enemy reaction times, implement a cooldown on the cloak so you can't spam it.

Was wondering the same too. As far as I remember Arkham City was made after the events of the Asylum.

I think they're just getting confused because Arkham City is basically just part of Gotham that got walled off. So the areas in Arkham City will still be there, but then there will be new areas too since it's set in the entirety of Gotham now.

I'm a huge Batman fan but I think I'm going to pass on this. Two Batman games of a very high quality were more than enough. There's nothing more to add without it becoming derivative.

One thing that confuses me is that they're treating it like an earlier Batman from his Arkham incarnations, yet Arkham City exists?

I mean, are they already rebooting the continuity of the games, or just retconning the fact that Arkham City is a new development in later Batman's life? It just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Either way, I'm loving the concept and will very much buy it if it's anywhere near the quality level of Rocksteady's Batman games.

Could be the very beginning stages of Arkham City, I think part of Gotham before it was separated.

I think this game is in good hands though, in a couple interviews they state that they are under close supervision by Rocksteady and willing to help them with whatever they need. Let's not forget they handled the Wii U port of Arkham City pretty well.

Reproducing the same stuff doesn't mean that its a) necessary b) good for the industry if people still buy it c) that I must have it.

I'm not expecting anything because I don't want to buy it. You asked me why and I told you because I don't want to play the same thing for the third time with some tweaks.

Is that okay with you?

Won't get it if it's not on PS4.

I'll probably just play it on PC later if I have to, but sucks. I'd get it day one but if you're not on PS4 this fall, with the possible exception of GTAV, you are being booted to my maybe later on PC list for $10 or even cheaper through other means.

Late port isn't as bad but its laughable considering how it seems like WB didn't learn from the Arkham City Armored Edition bullshit.

This has so much win written all over it. Too bad Batman Beyond has no memorable villains besides The Joker himself and second rate meh baddies. Either way, would be a fantastic concept.

Either that, or Rocksteady work on something else besides Batman. I believe these WB Montreal guys will pull it off. My hometown hardly ever disappoints regarding talent. :D

All that sounds quite good and gives me hope for a solid continuation of what is the best actiona adventure game I have ever played.

P.S. that Arkham City bit was obviously a typo. If this is a prequrl to both Batman Arkham Games, Arkham City shouldn't exist yet. They probably ment to say Gotham City there.

How do you infer that the game is going to be rehash because they said the gameplay will be similar to previous Arkham games? That's literally the most basic thing the developers could have said about the game and what we all were expecting; if it didn't have the great combat and stealth mechanics of the previous games in the series it wouldn't be an Arkham game.

Yeah, I enjoyed it. And it's not like AC was a huge sprawling mess of a city. You could get from one end to the other in like 4 minutes flat.#

OT; I;m still a little skeptical that Rocksteady don't have a huge involvement in this so it's very much wait and see.

Sounds like it has potential. Hope it's a good bridge between Arkham Asylum and City's strengths. Openness of the second, but with the focus and consistency in storytelling of the first. That and a bit more flair, instead of treading on the identical ground of the first and second. That'd be cool. Either way, just don't stick ****y DRM on your retail PC version guys, please.

I really hope that they dont start pulling a COD with this crap. 2 studios working on the same franchise with yearly releases. Sure, im jumping way ahead cause so far the time between Arkham games is pretty long but why else would they introduce another studio into the Arkham development cycle, if not to double their output?

Here is an image of Black Mask in Batman Arkham Origins; I also included information from Eurogamer.

UPDATE 2: Further details have emerged about Batman: Arkham Origins. Notably that its main antagonist is Black Mask, who orchestrates a city-wide manhunt for Batman among Gotham's outlaw population.

3

The game world will be approximately twice as big as it was in Arkham City. The north half of Origins' map will be similar to the setting of Arkham City, although it won't have giant prison walls surrounding it and Amusement Mile won't be flooded. There will also be more Christmas decorations, giving it a sort of Batman Returns vibe.

The south half of the map will be New Gotham, which is described as a classier part of town with more skyscrapers. Given the larger setting, players will be able to move about faster thanks to the Batwing offering a mode of fast travel. Players will need to dismantle hacked towers that emit jamming signals though before they can fly to certain regions.

While most of Batman's combat and stealth techniques will be familiar to those who played earlier games in the series, one of his new toys is the "remote claw," which allows players to shoot two targets, then pull them towards one another. This will be useful for stringing foes up, bounding two of them together at once, or making large object crash into thugs. You can also use the remote claw to set up slick traps, like dangling an explosive barrel from a perch, then luring guards under it with a sonic batarang.

Arkham Origins will feature plenty of detective work including side missions where Batman has to solve cases. These can involve watching security footage where you'll have to view the same events from different angles and slow down the playbacks until you can gather some clues.
