It seems that Milo bit interaction with the blonde British chick wasn't staged according to IGN.

IGN.com : I Have Met Milo : full article

fellow IGN'er Tal Blevins stepped up to the TV and was quickly scanned by the Natal camera in a matter of seconds. Once scanned, Molyneux asked Tal to try and peek around the world as if it were real (which was the same familiar country setting that had Milo sitting in a tree swing next to a pond).

Sure enough, the onscreen perspective moved in unison with Tal's head turns -- he looked left and then right and then left again, and each time he did, the screen reacted accordingly, giving Tal a better look at the serene locale.

...

Now it was finally my turn, and luckily I got a chance to experience the best part -- direct speech with Milo. Molyneux asked me to say my name clearly in front of the screen and then take a step back.

I did both and then when Peter asked me to take a step forward and I did, Milo immediately recognized me -- "Oh, Hello Jeremy!" Milo said before hopping out of his swing and walking up to greet me. Next he quipped, "I see you're wearing blue today," in reaction to the blue shirt that I had on.

I could hear the sound of impressed acknowledgments from the people standing behind me right afterwards

IGN

what was your personal first impression when you first saw the milo demo?

P.S. as usual, apologies if old.

I was shocked haha. In a good way though. I've just seen something similar not long a go on Discovery channel, something about being able to talk to this AI onscreen and do stuff that Microsoft showed us during their E3 conference. The funny thing is that the Discovery program was part of a what would come in the future, I'm guessing the future is coming sooner than expected d:

I dont know but how are they expecting to create an AI that wont become canned in an hour or twos time? This could either be quite amazing, or total crap.

Do you know what would be really cool...

This in an RPG....

Wow. I just realised how good natal could be if it's used properly. Can you imagine that. Talking to NPC's! You could be given a list of command choices to ask it. Or it could recognise key words. I don't trust the AI to do anything other than heavily scripited stuff. ("Go to the lake milo" - Why should I go to the lake milo? - We should do some more go to the lake milo). Wow....They need to make an RPG like this.... FUND IT!

Very true, too bad nobody would try it, i mean even if its limited and 'canned' it could still be quite fun

For some reason this reminds me a lot of HAL from A Space Odyssey. I don't trust Milo.

But seriously I think it's pretty cool. Although I'm sure if you were really trying to push Milo's limit you could.

The options will be limited, but imagine how interesting it could be with years of programming to its "recognition database".

Yes, the glaring flaw is that you can only talk to Milo when the talk icon appears, so basically when HE wants you to, and only about a very specific subject, that is what peter M said, and the problems with Milo, also Milo was being manipulated by a programmer in the back when people went to see it, so thats kind of a problem too. Peter M said most of Milo is also trickery so far, but I'll give him time to at least make it medicore.

yeah it could definitely be cool. even really simple things like the npcs looking at you instead of straight ahead will be cool. but talking to them would be even cooler, but teh development time for an rpg like that would be massive. i'm sure they could add some little functions in games though.

Eventually it would. Its pretty easy to trip up Chatbots. For example its very easy to see that Elbot is an AI when he gives you random answers. Unless Milo is lot more advanced, it should be pretty easy to fool

As posted in another topic - Its got to be scripted!!!

I don't understand how this is going to be released as a game. It has to be scripted, if it isn't then it would most likely pass the 'Turing Test'. And, at the same time is generating a computer image which supposedly can show emotion whilst also being capable of reading emotion.

No robot has ever passed the Turing Test, which requires the robot to fool 30% of its human interrogators (They believe they are communicating with a real person via text).

The Technology obviuosly has massive ramifications for the entertainment industry. However, what i've just been told is surely decades away from being a reality.

I'll stick with EyePet (have any of you seen this years E3 trailer for it?), it seems much more normal playing with a little pet using motion control (and drawing pics for it to copy) than playing with a young boy :D.

I don't see why some guys feel the need to point out it's scritped. It's fairly obvious it's not an intelligent self aware A.I, It's not called Skynet it's called Milo.

What your doing is bashing it for no reason over seeing the possiblities. Someone suggested an RPG, having RPG characters recognize you and make comments towards you, being able to walk about and look around this world like you would in real life. Actually interacting directly with the NPC over having a list of stupid lines you can say.

The next fable done like this would be awesome.

Perhaps it's because all of these "great" ideas are already being done or could be done with the standard equipment that comes with the 360. NPC's already look at your character and respond. You can already look around the world with a controller. The system and games know who you are when you log on with your gamertag. And there's no reason why games couldn't use voice recognition with the standard microphone. What new thing could this actually bring besides mapping your real world movements to in-game (for which there are at least two alternatives)?

It doesn't pass the Turing test, it was demonstrated during the Eurogamer preview. Molyneux said that's the most important problem for them.

The game is an adventure/sim hybrid. Obviously, you won't talk out of context for too long, just like you don't try to don't shoot anyone in COD. It's only natural that you will follow the rules of the game. So, the illusion will be perfect.

Molyneux is a visionary. Remember The Room? That thing was science-fiction just a few years ago, now it's standard...

I like the eye pet in conjunction with the motion controller more. It has more capabilities to be used in real games and, as seen with the eye pet trailers, the eye pet is pretty similar to Natal (except for the voice recognition part).

True, and it wouldn't take much for the voice recognition to be added as well.

I'm sorry.... but tech demos are neat. I want to see an actual game before I think this is a good idea. Just because a little demo like this is neat, doesn't mean it's actually scalable to a full fledged game.

I fear Milo may come out of my TV at night and touch me

dommeus

i lol'ed

Like someone said before, it would be amazing if Natal was to be properly imlemented into an RPG, IMO.

Imagine the possibilities, actually being able to interact with NPCs without the use of a controller and being able to swing a weapon and actually physically hold up your shield.

It has me frothing at the mouth

No, no, no.

The npc idea would have to be on its own. It would trigger when entering a conversation like in most RPGs. A RPG based entirely on natal would be to much, I doubt anybody would want that much physical interaction, accuracy problems and the time it would take to do things would increase to much. I appreciate the idea of keeping healthy in a game, but leave that for wiifit, there is nothing wrong with wanting to sit down while I play. Having natal for chatting with Npc's only would be massively engaging, you don't need the entire game to run with natal.

Also not all Rpgs are oblivion style, but nearly all have NPC interaction.

I don't see it being that difficult if you keep it to just Npc's. With games like old republic having such a giant voice cast, I don't see why a slightly smaller game couldn't do it.

My god. I love this idea so much.....

I agree that he has made some great innovative games. Dungeon Keeper and Black & White spring to mind, but unfortunately, Molyneux is known for building up tremendous hype and setting impossibly high standards for his projects as well. I remember the first time I heard him talk about Fable, he made it sound like it would revolutionize the way people play games and, while it turned out to be an entertaining title, I don't think it came anywhere close to the grand aspirations Molyneux had for it. Reading the IGN article written by the journalist that had a chance to try Milo only solidified my opinion that this is simply a "Seaman" game for this generation, which, while I think could be interesting, I think could also get pretty boring after you've experienced all the possible responses that Milo is programmed to give.

Now they just need to make a interactive video game with some jailbait-looking japanime girl to do 'things' to and they got Japan in the bag.

I'll stick with EyePet (have any of you seen this years E3 trailer for it?), it seems much more normal playing with a little pet using motion control (and drawing pics for it to copy) than playing with a young boy :D.Stoner-Pimp

that sounded wrong, the young boy part.

It's not like they're trying to get you to buy a game based on Milo. It's a tech demo. People go around calling Crysis an over-glorified tech demo all the time, but they can't see a real one when it's beating them on the head with a stick :?

I think all the 14 year olds and adults with the brain of a14 year old saw Milo as some weird Nintendogs/Little boy sim. When I looked at it, I saw the future of rpg NPCs and what's easily the best rpg dialog system ever. I'm sure it's scripted and that everything is probably very contextual, but I don't care. I don't know why anyone cares. It's not Nintendogs or a Little Boy/Friend Simulator. It's for a game. Do you get mad that you can't ask Final Fantasy characters about what happened on Lost last night? Were you mad that you couldn't ask Sheva in RE5 what she thought about the Laker's game last week?

It's a game, it's called Milo and Kate. Kate is his dog.
