Judging from the number of games IGN has given a 9 this year, an 8.5 from them says a lot. Or at least I imagine it will. Wonder if it'll get higher here.
I always thought it was too hyped. Could be great though.

Seems perfectly hyped to me, if you're in an ID game for the story then you've come to the wrong place.
Everyone was hyping it as a revolutionary mind blowing game, and I dont think it will be. It looks to be a bit innovative in enemy movement and thats about it. If an FPS is based around singleplayer, it should have one that either has a really good story, or a really good adventure/puzzle element like Metroid Prime. I have not played Rage, so I wouldnt know, but neither of these things seemed to be in Rage.
Okay honestly, besides the tech and weapon upgrades what sets Rage apart from other FPS's? Its a super competitive market this year and its gotta bring some new stuff or innovation to the table in some form.

I wouldnt say that...What did BLOPS bring that was new? Or MW2? Or KZ3? R3? They didnt bring anything "new". The tech is pretty amazing you have to admit. Those visuals running at a constant 60fps is more imperssive to me than anything I did in MW2. Not saying MW2 was bad because I enjoyed it...but just trying to make a point that games dont have to constantly bring something NEW. They can improve upon and build off that.
Edit: Vehicle combat btw...like someone saiid above me. LEGIT vehicle combat too, not some mini game version.

12 hours for an FPS isn't what i would consider short..especially this gen I guess it's not that short for an FPS.....still, for a game with 5-6 years in development it seems kinda absurd to only be 12 hours with barely any story? I just think ID is stuck in their past (based on Doom 3 anyway) and doesn't seem to be trying to innovate like they used to. 8.5 is far from a bad score so I'm sure it's a good game.

It doesn't matter how many games IGN have given scores of 9 or above this year, if RAGE didn't get higher than 8.5, it is because it didn't deserve it.

With your post, you reminded me of alan Wake. In development for so long, the product was very disappointing.

Don't get me wrong, the tech looks VERY impressive (in fact, it's best looking and running engine I've seen on consoles so far) but man after playing shooter after shooter this year you tend to get a bit burnt out on them. That said, the vehicle combat does look fun and feels like a nice change of pace from all the shooting. Maybe I'd look more forward to this game if there weren't so many other FPS's this year, they really need to be spaced out more. Also, the only CoD I bought and enjoyed was MW1. Got sick of MW2, BLOPS looked more of the same except with zombies, not interested in MW3.
I also don't see why R3 gets so much flak and gets called generic alot. What makes the other FPSs any less generic. We need more FPS's that focus on the fun factor of things (like with what Rage is doing) but be more spaced out so we don't get totally burnt out on shooters.

RAGE may not be fps of the year, but I doubt MW3 will even be shooter of the month.
Its actually the atmosphere that draws me in with id software games. Doom3 had a crap story but man was I hooked to that game...I loved the atmosphere all around and had a blast playing it. I love having a good story but it just needs to do ENOUGH to daw you in, it doesnt have to pull an Uncharted or Mass Effect. Look at Dark Souls...ZERO story yet the game is a BLAST to play.

I agree on the doom 3 thing. I kept playing till the end cause the atmosphere was actually well done imo. It was a fun time. Rage hook it looks to me is some good AI which im interested to test out.
I just think that it looks fun as hell to play and looks like it plays great to boot. Not to mention that it is absolutely gorgeous. All I can ask for in a shooter, really. A lot more appealing to me than more modern military crap as well.

Looks great. I'll take this game over MW3 or BF3 any day of the week baby! Dark Souls and Rage, and then back to working overtime to make ends meet.. :(
I think it's kind of a curse for ID, if they put one corridor in their games people will be pissed. While some other shooters have the same campaign seven editions in a row and nobody from the press complains. Perhaps there were not enough set pieces.
Anyone else think the car combat multiplayer looks fun? Looks like it could get nuts while rumbling all over the wasteland blowing each other up. I'll take it over the usual multiplayer that accompanies a FPS, such as team death match and capture the flag. I can only handle so much of that noise.
