IGN: Sony is Aiming to Sell 5 Million PS4s by March 2014

Sony Computer Entertainment President Andrew House has announced Sony aims to sell five million PlayStation 4 consoles in 2013 during his speech at Sony's Tokyo Game Show 2013 keynote conference.

President of Sony's Worldwide Studios for Sony Computer Entertainment Shuhei Yoshida clarified on Twitter that House meant during fiscal 2013, meaning by March 2014.

They likely will, most of the gamers on the internet are going with the PS4. Plus with all the advertising and positive look on Sony (negative on Microsoft) they have all the momentum. 

I would count on it.

It looks to sell more than that.

Why such low expectations? I expect them to sell about 16 million units by March 2014.

Sony should be mostly concerned with software sales and PS+ subscriptions. I remember there was a person who posted in one of these forums about piracy. That hurts the industry more than anything.

This. End of the year seems much mroe realistic.

It took a year and a half last gen to reach 5 million. I think thia gen will do better, but not 4+ times better.

But fails to show one single functioning near retail PS4 yet.

Selling PS4s won't be the problem. The more difficult task will be manufacturing enough units. If they get 5 million units on the shelves, they'll all sell. They could probably double that. Hopeful they don't sacrifice build quality.

Looks like a conservative goal right now

$200 cheaper than launch PS3 (which was not dev friendly) and loved by the media... yeah that number is on lock. I would expect it to surpass that as a matter of fact.

Seems ambitious.....I would be surprised if they hit their targets. Thats a lot of units with comparable alternatives in the market place.

Yeah, Sony... I love your optimism but you better get that stock sorted if you ever want to reach those numbers. Waiting lists are no fun. :P

Sony is a public traded company. It's in their best interest to post forecasts for the sake of the shareholders to not only supply confidence to the current holders, but to also entice potential new investors.  

I keep forgetting this is a gaming site filled with 13 year olds that have no life experience..

Nintendo put out a shit product and expected fools to buy because of the Wii success.  Not really comparable situations, but nothing is guaranteed which is why it is a goal.

PS4 isn't? Considering reports of Killzone Shadow Fall struggling, Driveclub struggling to run 30fps, and Battlefield 4 running on 720p native@30fps, I am a little worried about just how efficient the architecture is.

Don't be shocked if the PS4 ends up flatlining because people realize that the PS4 isn't backward compatible with PS3 games.

It looks to sell more than that.

I think the PS4 is better then the Wii U and I have been gaming since the NES days.
