IGN sources detail, confirm disappointing PS4 specs

"The PlayStation 4,reportedly codenamed Orbis, may utilize custom chips based on AMD's A8-3850 APU and Radeon HD 7670 GPU, sources have told IGN, offering the combined performance of both integrated and discrete graphics processors.

According to theofficial product specs, the A8-3850 packs a quad-core 2.9GHz processor with an integrated graphics chip. The APU will work in tandem with the system's dedicated GPU, the HD 7670, a DirectX 11-enabled card clocked to 1GHz with up to 1GB of dedicated VRAM.

By current standards, the HD 6670 is an entry-level processor with a price of about $74.99. Benchmark tests place framerate performance for taxing titles games like Metro 2033 and Crysis 2 set to high settings at a resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p) with average framerates of just over 30 frames-per-second. The chip also supports HDMI1.4a output, which is necessary for thesystem's rumored 4k output. Naturally, a comparably lightweight operating system and console-optimized games will likely improve performance, but the PS4's real edge could come from the secondary GPU provided by the APU.

Onboard the A8-3850 is an HD 6550D, which makes the APU capable of running games at baseline specs and lower resolutions without the help of a discrete GPU. When the APU is paired with the HD 7670, however, Sony will be able to utilize an asymmetrical CrossFire configuration to share the load of realtime graphics processing.

Our sources caution that while current plans for the device make use of the the chipsets mentioned, it is possible that changes could be made prior to the system's launch.

With publishers rumored to havealready begun developmentfor the system and the system slated for a 2013 release, additional details are sure to emerge over the next few months."

How disappointing. IGN have accurately predicted specs of many systems, and now have the ps4's specs are in. Garbage hardware.

Has 7670 Gpu (a 6670 rebranded) and amd apu. This is a huge blow to the PS4. People expected a lot more and Sony pulled a Wii U. Did people honestly expect a powerhorse with the financial situation they are in???? LEaves only one system left to be there for the hardcore and that the 720.

I hope Sony will change their mind, but looks like ps4 will be a huge disappointment for hardcore fans to flock to 720 once again.

It could be the next Wii for all I care, show me some good games and Ill pony up the dough.

considering the Wii is in first place and it's the weakest console, and the PS3 is in last place and is arguably the strongest console I'd say the xbox 360 had too much horse power under it's hood

I know that keeping the costs down is sometimes a good move also, but what about user experience? Suppose if you cut the costs down, it hampers the user's experience. You don't want to keep swapping discs all the time, having exclusives on 1 disc which means smaller games and no HD movies.

That's the target audience of Sony's. I'm one of their audience who are looking for a decent hardware for good games and experience on it.

God Of War Ascension and The Last Of Us are running in an Nvidia 7800 which is leagues and leagues below today's entry-level PC gaming rigs. but Sony devs optimize it so they are getting everything out of the graphics card.

the 720 can be more powerful than the PS4 for all i care. you can keep your Gears, Halo, and Forza for the next 8 years while i get new IPs.
