FPS games just dont even feel like shooters to me. It's really just mostly run n' gun action. Third person shooters like Gears, Uncharted, etc, actually feel like epic shooters because you can actually SEE your character rolling for cover, shooting over corners, get hit, change weapons, and the whole thing feels more complete.

FPS games, no matter how renowned, just feel like arcade games. I played R:FOM and couldn't even finish it. COD4 online is basically shooting for 30-45 seconds (if you're good), dieing, and doing it again.

I dont understand how this genre is so popular.

Does anyone get what I'm saying? Does anyone agree?

I like them both, but I also like being able to see your character like in gears, it just adds something to the game. Makes it seem more actiony or something

Same, I mean I played a few hours of Halo 3 today in coop mode and really didn't get what was so great about it. The thing I came away with the most was how floaty the jumps were.

Yea i totally agree with you on that, they both feel different and play different too.But fps games kinda put you into the game more you know?FPS games are kinda more realistic too when you think about it cuz like,in real life when your looking around all you can see is whats in front of you and out the corner of your eyes,3third person shooters you can see in front of you, behind you,the side of you and all over.Basically they both are different, and they both are fun and i really dont see a problem with any of them.

But to answere your question about first person shooters, they are made to make you feel as if your in the game and in the action and your like really there.

Third person shooters are good but there have been way better FPS games than Third Person games.

Halo Trilogy

Call of Duty

Half Life 1, 2, Episode 1, Episode 2

Deus Ex

System Shock 1,2

Bioshock

Tribes

Unreal 2k4(F U unreal 3)

THe PC Rainbow Six(its overrated but Rainbow Six Vegas is good too)

THere have just been way better shooters

THe story in Gears sucks. THe gameplay is good and exciting but the FPS games play better, faster, have more features to them, have better online,

Uncharted isnt a shooter, but its a good action game. However once again there have been better FPS stories, atmosphere, gameplay, etc

Not that uncharted and gears suck. Its just they arent that good.

I think it comes down to the game itself. Uncharted & GeOW are good examples of games that really immerse the player in the world. Of course I think a lot of FPS like Half-Life, F.E.A.R., and Deus Ex also do an extremely good job of this. While some FPS are definetely "run and gun" (ala CoD 4 MP) others are much more story driven.

I guess it depends on how the game is presented to you, for instance, I feel the same way you do about fps games such as Halo, Far Cry instincts etc...

but then again, there are some FPS games like Return to castle wolfenstein, Cliver barker's undying etc... that make me totally forget that they're FPS games until the subject comes up.

I guess it just depends on what you view is a good quality of the game and what you consider a good presentation.

At least that's how I feel sometimes.

I really wish I could see myself roll and take cover from a 3rd person point of view.

I just don't understand how this guy thinks the way he does.

I feel it to be a lot more epic and immersive in First person, if I'm inside and everything is from my PoV it makes the game much better for me. Complete opposite for me, I hate third person shooters.

because u feel like you the character....thats why....and it usually require more skill, fps then third person, excluding some games, but defiantly not uncharted or gears. dang uncharted is easy and gears...shoot a shot gun anywhere and u kill ppl, thats why i love gears for fun, but serious games for me are usually fps games like halo or CS:Source.

FPS is like airsoft on a flat screen, which sort of killed the 3D immersion IMO; TPS feel more like radio-controlled robot with actions (on screen)... it is just a preference thing I guess.

I was bashing FPS (here FPS refers to the videogame genre), not airsoft.

FPS video games just aint at the same level, they lack the realism (and many other) factor(s) that airsoft got.

Too bad airsoft (can) cost a lot. >_

Althought I disagree with u on the Uncharted not being absoluely awesome.

I find it sad that a "disclaimer" is sad and shows the oh how should i put this, lack of knowledge of most posters that need said disclaimer.

I dont think Uncharted is bad, i dont think its as amazing nor will it be one of the PS3s best. I think part of the love for the game has been the lack of big games on the PS3.

I think when people play MGS 4, when people get a chance to enjoy Infamous, or if people saw some of the work Naughty DOg did with Jak and Daxter they will see Uncharted is one of those really good games. Just not those AAA games, and not one of those contenders for greatest of all time games that certain FPS games like Deus Ex, Half Life, Half Life 2, Halo COmbat Evolved, Call of Duty 1, COunter Strike, Unreal 2k4, etc have accomplished.

No disrespect to the game, i just felt there have been way better FPS games, than Uncharted was a TPS game. Especially when it wasnt even a shooter. It was more of an action game.

MOre along the lines of a tomb raider. Better compared to action games like Tomb Raider if you wanted to go even bigger and simplify the genre to just action max payne and resident evil comparisons in terms of gameplay and single player experience.

Thats just my 2 cents. I dont see Uncharted as a TPS, I see Gears, Socom, Graw as TPS.

Its a not a traditional TPS and I would also call it a action-adventure game from the hand-to-hand and the platforming. But I do feel its a great game like a summer blockbuster that lives up to the hype.

Its not the absolute best game ever. And perhaps as time goes on maybe its just considered a AA game but for me and right now its nothing but AAA I love the game. And even if no sequel ever came out it will be one of my fav games ever.

They are totally diffrent experiences. TPS allows for more thinking and requires more strategy like taking cover, popping out in the right time. FPS is run up, shoot and......again just shoot, but it provides everything, its story, presentation and action throughout the main characters eyes, it feels as is you are the main person and its more immersive. While TPS, provides more refained main character and makes you see his story, characterization and end.

Which is fine, its not like AA games arent some favorites among many gamers. I love the DMC franchise and am hooked to DMC 4. I loved Legend of Dragoon(didnt even get A on some sites).

I love the MGS franchise and we all know how it scores extremely well but wasnt the biggest MGS 3 fan. In fact i felt it was the worst of the 3(still would have given it a 9 though). Thats just how it is. I was giving just my opinion. I think Uncharted is a good game, but there have been better games than it before. Especially in the FPS genre. WHich this topic is about.

Personally when i finally get my PS3 i will be giving Uncharted a quick buy as well. Im a big naughty dog fan. THey to me are Sonys best, not insomniac.

I prefer first person because the movement and vision seems to be more direct. I don't really mind about seeing my character do something as long as I know I'm doing it. Then again, you need to play the right fps for your taste. For example, if you mainly like just aiming your gun and outshooting your enemy, COD4 is the thing for you. If you feel like outsmarting your opponent you should be playing halo or something (It's just true guys, if you don't think in halo games, you're totally doomed against decent opponents).

I totally agree. I really hope 3rd person shooters like gears and uncharted will be the new standard. FPS has gotten very stale and only the cream of the crop manages to catch some serious attention. Like biohsock halo3 and half life2ep2. hopefully more developers will realise this and we will see the dawning of the third person shooter era. imagine if something came along that was better then gears in that category :O

Why is playing through YOUR OWN EYES, arcade like? I dont get it .....

Seeing a character over the shoulder is bloody arcade like, less emmersive, amd judging by gears, little to no variety in gameplay.

I don't play them to understand them, I play them to have fun. And I had a lot more fun with Unreal Tournament 2004 than I did with Gears of War.
