I should mention that this isnt my final decison.

But based on this statment, i really wonder

"Wow alot of you people are missing the whole point of games on blu-ray disk.  Why not just put games on regular CDs? The'eve made some really great games on the CD format  (PS1 games were on CDs)  As you all know, that would be lame...reason why games have moved to Blu-Ray is simple cause of storage issues...People want big levels, longer games, high def graphics, uncompressed audio...ALL THAT CANNOT FIT ON A 9GB DVD WITHOUT BEING COMPRESSED,THIS IS WHY GEARS OF WAR IS ONLY 7 LEVELS LONG. THIS IS ALSO WHY OBLIVION IS 4 DISKS LONG!!  High Def takes up lots of space! ""

                                                                                                                                                                   Shu

Who doesnt want big levels, longer games?  And at some point, everybody will have an HDTV.      Did DVD9 limit Gears and Oblivion?

San Andreas really set the bar of a Big World and just as many others said, I WANT BIGGER.  I wonder if this game had a realistic look, how much space of  DVD9 will it fill up.

Thats why i'm glad that a game like God of War will be exclusive to PS3.  The 1st 2 look breathtaking for a nearing 7 yr old system.  Now going back to that Big levels, hi def graphics and longer games, will a 30 HR massive level/world god of war fit on DVD9?

If devil may cry stay mutiplatform, the games will most likey will have the same detail and size like the upcoming 1st one.

While we at it, Nintendo really hurted the advancement of its games.   Zelda will always have the same look and feel as the Wii game.  Big Set back.  And even more realistic Link, Donkey Kong, Mario and Luigi would of been nice.

Oblivion is on one disk.  You fail.  Besides bigger levels, longer games, and the such cost time and money.  Game length isn't determined by the size of the disk but by the budget and deadline of the game maker.  They are not going to make the game twice as long for another $10 mil when they are selling the game at 60 regardless of the length.

There will come a time when a larger format than DVD will make sense, but honestly Sony jumped the gun.  The new disc formats were too new, expensive and untested to just go throwing it in the PS3 the way they did.  It made sense for the PS2 to use DVD considering it was on the rise anyway and everyone wanted DVD.  But the jump from VHS to DVD was pretty amazing and didn't require any new hardware.

This is true too and I find it hilarious when folks are saying "GTA IV coulda been 5x as big!" without considering that such a game would have to have 5x the budget and way longer development time, developers don't have money trees growing in their gardens...

i think there are slightly greater issues that might kill off gaming....such as too much realism, some people already find it hard to distinquish between whats right on gta and whats right in real life. dvd9 / blueray will make no difference.except blueray might sell a few more ps3s until the blueray players become cheaper.

Call me when Sony fills up a blu-ray with something other than high def video, lossless audio, and duplicating stuff on the disc so it can read faster. Look at Motorstorm Blu-ray exclusive design and it has 8 tracks. Sure you might get more tracks to download but that goes to the harddrive not the blu-ray.

lol yep a larger format will make for larger games all right.
Let alone the fact typical rpg game lenght of 40-60 hours hasn't changed from...the nes days.

Typical FPS lenght 7-10 hours hasn't changed since...the nes days.

Platformer 10-20 hours hasn't changed from the...nes days.
face it Blu ray is not needed, Oblivion didn't come on 4 discs, the only reason blue dragon is comming on 3, is because of the 30+ hours of High def CGI cinematcs on it, and Gears of war can range from 8-12 hours of play if you ramp it up to the highest difficulty  and most fps dont even surpass 10 hours....

its only a few months in the ps3 era, nost of its games are PS2 games and some came from 360.  DVD games they are now.

PS2 had CD based games, but as the yrs went on games got bigger.  Then sony had a slide stat sheet to prove this?

Just in case you didnt notice, consoles are becoming more like PCs nowadays. Larger dvd capacities will not be needed when consoles have a standard hard drive. The PS3 could hve easily eschewed the Blu Ray player and made the hard disk much larger.

It is MUCH faster to read info off a hard drive than an optical drive. Install the games to a hard drive, let it be 12 damn disks long. Doesnt matter. You would still only need one to play.

Actually, the overwhelming amount of space that Oblivion took up was for voice acting. And they had that much voice acting in that large an area with that much to do and it looked that good... and they still fit it onto a DVD9 on the Xbox 360 without problem.

DVD 9 will do just fine for this generation.

Uhh, no. Resistance eats up like 17 gigs, motorstorm 13 gigs, enchanted arms 14 gig, armored core 14 gig, genji 13 gig, Formula 1 12 gig.

sure its uncompressed but that's how big they are when you don't use compression techniques.

I think HD format will be standard in the next generation of console. I remeber once upon a time reading an article on how the 586CPU was the end because anything higher would get too hot for PC use.

Oblivion was like a 200+ hour game and Mass Effect is supposively going to be even bigger than Oblivion so you = wrong. By way, the only people complaining about DVD9 are the Japanese who love to use CGI, cutscenes, etc more than they should IMO.

I'm guessing he meant "biggest" as in "most to do", or "bigger gameworld", in which case, Oblivion is  > all those games... put together. Not to mention, Enchanted Arms is on the 360, too.

The problem is that the stuff is uncompressed because devs have the space... and then ask you to install stuff to the hard drive in order to keep load times decent. Compression does NOT necessarily mean reduced quality. Only morons argue otherwise. For proof, get a zip or rar file.

Oblivion doesnt appeal to everybody.   Thank god for DVD9  because cutscenes in games is a waste of time, money and space.

I didn't say Oblivion did. I'm just using that game as an example as to why DVD9 won't kill gaming. It is huge and was a great game. Mass Effect is going to be huge and should be a great game.

Thanks for proving they filling the Blu-ray disks up with garbage. How is it that the 360 version of Armored Core 4 and Enchanted Arms both fit on DVD 9 disks and look almost exactly the same? Motorstorm is pretty much barebones and Resistance doesn't look better than GEOW?

People like space, If they didn't then people wouldn't  buy Mansions. Did Elvis need a house the size of Graceland for 3-5 people to live in? Of course not!  But you use all that space cause it's there... it's like buying popcorn and candy for $45 when you go to the movies so you can munch in peoples ears...cause it's there!

Do you think DVD9 will last 5 years ahead in time? I think not. In a few years, there will probably be a new Elder Scrolls game which takes advantage of the new technology.

yes... DVD is going to kill the future of gaming. It's over, gaming as we know it will grind to a hault, NES cartridges will catch fire, PS1 games will explode into a hailstorm of melted plastic, Xboxs will grow arms and strangle their unsuspecting owners in their sleep.

oh wait... hmm... games still seem to be coming. Long games like Oblivion... Bethesda seems to be saying that they can get Oblivion and Shimmering Isles onto one disc just fine, and they plan to release it in stores at a later date... huh... how could they get 130 hours of gameplay onto a DVD9? Witchcraft?

Wait... Gears of War released two bonus levels free on LIVE? And four more on the way for purchase, to be made free in the future? Wait... no you're kidding, Halo 2, a two year old game, is getting more levels? Insanity!

What's that? Developers invented this thing called disc swapping? Impossible! Blue Dragon just uses 3 DVDs so that I can get a Blue Dragon game instead of pouring my money into Blu-Ray? Brilliant!

So will PS3 games - it has nothing to do with developers running out of space, and everything to do with the high cost of creating HD content. Bethesda has already stated that the Shimmering Isles expansion could have fit on the Oblivion disc, however it didn't come out until a year later - kind of hard to add it back in at that point - who's going to buy the same game again for an expansion?

Most games on the shelf right now aren't even using half of a DVD9 - DLC comes later to add more to a game, but the developer doesn't have to wait until the sequel to add new content. It has nothing to do with disc space limitations.

That doesn't make any sense. Games like Resistance, Motorstorm, etc are going to have downloadable extras as well. Does that mean they ran out of BR space?

The real reason there will be a lot of downloadables is because of the on-line factor. This is really the first gen we will see a ton of it.

Agreed. As Martha Stewart (wait... am I a hardcore gamer or my mom... well she did serve some hard time) would say "it's a good thing."

I like the idea that I can get a favorite game and just keep playing it for a year or two. I've never felt the need to put down the Halo CE controller, so hey, if Microsoft wants to keep putting Halo 3 and GeoW content out there for a couple years, I'm all for it.

I haven't seen a game yet on ps3 that couldn't have fit on a dvd9 with uncompression techniques, yes even resistance which if made better would have only taken up 12gigs and not 17gigs of which 1.4gigs of that is padding.

You want a more realistic monkey wearing a tie who throws wooden barrels and hits homeruns with a boxing glove?

dvd is just fine for gaming this gen. the only thing that takes up alot of space on a disk is cgi cutscene and voice work (though this is no where near as bad as cgi). i certainly dont see dvd holding back multiplat games like gta since that hasnt used cgi in ages and the voice work is only slightly above normal games.

using oblivion against dvd is a bit puzzling since that game looked great graphically, had excellent draw distance, a huge world and alot of people were able to get round 200 hours of play out of it. not to mention it only took up roughly 4.5gb.

another game, mass effect. again very nice graphically, cant say about draw distance since i havnt screens to back either good or bad up, the game is said to be massive and is confirmed to fit on 1 disk.

as time goes by technology for storage improves in ways such as giving you more (blu ray, hd dvd) and ways to make a game fit onto what you have already. sometime last year microsoft showed off a programme (cant remember if they actually made it or just advertised it) that reduces texture size memory wise. one of the games used to show this off was a game called roboblitz which can be found on xbla. roboblitz is game running off the unreal engine 3 and has a very good physics system. the game was pretty nice graphically and the games size was pretty decent. this game weighed in at 50mb the maximum file size allowed on live arcade at a time.

in the future it is possible that dvd wont be sufficient for gaming but for the next few years im very confident that it will hold its own just fine.

Funny how games on Xbox 360 can fit on a DVD9 AND look better than PS3's Blu-Ray disc games

Oblivion is on one disk. You fail. Besides bigger levels, longer games, and the such cost time and money. Game length isn't determined by the size of the disk but by the budget and deadline of the game maker. They are not going to make the game twice as long for another $10 mil when they are selling the game at 60 regardless of the length.billbradsky

you are like givin excuses for the devlopers not to make the games bigger and longer because it cost money.most likely the  next gen after this it will  cost  them even more money to make the game...lucky for the 360 being here, the devlopers can now offically slack off..

exactly. i'd rather have the option of more space than run the risk of running out of space on a game. plus if blu-ray movies are any indication, the image quality of games to come will just be stunning on blu-ray

When are you going to realise that Sony is BS you into thinking that blu-ray is needed because they want to have dominance over the movie industry?

So why does motorstorm contain only 8 tracks? Why is resistance only 1-2 hours longer than Gears when it uses up over twice the amount of space? Why is it that this generation's most ambitious and large game so far fits on HALF of a DVD? Why is it that the almighty Blu-Ray needs help from the hard drive?

DVD is mostly enough for this generation. If it happens not to be, swapping a second disk should most definitely not be a problem.

Oh, and money IS an issue. A big one. Content is not generated out of thin air, everything you see had a team of people working long and hard on it. That texture? took an artist (or two!) several hours to get right. That level? Artists, programmers, designers, even architects in some cases took several days to make and polish, not to mention the poor folks testing it. All this costs money, and a truckload of it. a 50GB game of pure gameplay (all 50Gb full of textures, levels, characters, weapons, etc.) The cost might jump into the 10 digits. At around $40 per game (taking out the wholesale price and Sony commision), that's a LOT of required purchases.
