I know, I know. This topic has been beaten to death. But, now that I have the console sales in my sig, I noticed that Wii took a huge jump recently. Xbox 360 was beating it like 8 days ago, but now Wii all of a sudden is that far ahead of 360? I know that vgchartz just estimates a lot of the time, then re-adjusts the numbers when the actual numbers come in. But even for just an estimation, it seems like they are overestimating Wii numbers some. Also, Vgchartz didn't put Xbox 360 over 10 million sales until like 4 months AFTER Microsoft said 10 million were sold...
The best thing to do is take all the charts and compare them to the NASDAQ numbers (the numbers that investors pay attention to). Because the HASDAQ numbers showed the PS3 at over 5 million a while back, where the charts are showing a lower number most of the time.
When the wii has 50 million and the xbox360 is on 20 million, fanboys will still deny it, and call vg charts off by 30 million.
Vg charts uses npd results to calculate it's scores. Thats why its so slow to update, they have to wait every months for the npd results.

Actually, it uses data it retrieves from sample retailers, then extrapolates. They then later adjust for numbers released by other groups with more accurate numbers, although I'm not 100% sure whether they adjust to NPD numbers as NPD actually does the exact same thing (takes numbers from retailers and extrapolates, only assumedly on a much larger scale). I'd say at best it's within 3% at worst as far off as 10% at a given point.

i think they adjust their estimates after npd comes out... so it is a good source for estimates and total sales but not a good source for estimated monthly sales before npd...

Not to be rude but get over it. The Wii is now the best selling "next-gen" console. Even if the Wii was still behind the 360 in sales, it'll pass it up sooner or later. There's no stopping the Xbox with the motion controller.
I have yet to see a shred of real evidence to support any claim that VGcharts is off aside from "NPD said so." Ive heard every argument that NPD is more accurate but still havent seen any shred of proof that they really are any more accurate themselves. At the very least VGCarts is consistent and gives us weekly updates while NPD only does it once a month and has children running the show (as seen from the letter sent to VGCharts by some irrate manager who insulted them for not matching their numbers which is actually very alarming if youre into conspiracy theories). Long story short, NPD and VGCharts are the best sources for numbers since they both use real scientific methods to collect data however both are equally likely to be off. They are a much better source for data than the companies themselves who will never tell us the real truth when they are failing hard.

Ooh my missinformed friend. No one will go to jail if you spin the numbers differently. For example, I can say the PS is outselling the Wii worldwide and you couldnt touch me. Why? Because it is. The combined totals for the PS2, PS3 & PSP are outselling the Wii. All companies pull crap like that all the time which is how we end up with all these outrageous claims. Heres another. HD is dead since BR is outselling it 2 to 1. Since both combined only make up 1% of the market how could either be dead when there is still 99% of the market left?
Disinformation, not telling the whole truth, & cooking the books is a very common practice in business and no one goes to jail for it because they will just claim ignorance or error if they are ever caught.
nope...its not reliable, but its a good estimator.

Best there is for sales numbers right now. They have improved massively since the start, and after the beta period was over they have beenexellent and are still getting better.
For those that still doubt them, follow them for a month or so and you will find that they are more than good enough.
Remember that they get numbers from all regions, not just North America (NPD)

qft, they get closer than other websites but overall they still can be off by a lot(like last month when the said ps3 outsold 360) thats why we cant really trust their Europe sales numbers.
