[QUOTE="lordreaven"]10 on any score means perfect, and as much i like some games, i will never give one a 10 (no game is perfetc). But i also believe we should use the full 1-10 scale, so most games that score a 9.0 on GS wouldbe a 7.5-8.5, 9 should be EXTREMLY hard to get. but then again GS would never use a feature.lordreaven
Kevin Van-Ord explained what a 10 on GameSpot means in the sticky.
Well that is silly. Just because a skyscraper is now the world's tallest doesn't mean that skyscrapers will no longer be built, and that no skyscraper will ever be taller. You can also refer to our description of what a 10 means on this site: "This exceedingly rare score refers to a game that is as perfect as a game can aspire to be at its time of release. Obviously, the constantly changing standards for technology and gameplay will probably make this game obsolete some day, but at its time of release, a game earning this score could not have been improved upon in any meaningful way." We acknowledge that a game may be bested one day, but based on everything that has existed to this point in time, we do not believe that Super Mario Galaxy 2 could have been meaningfully improved.
But gaming will not die because SMG2 is as close to perfect as it could have been reasonably expected to be. If I eat the most delicious meal I have ever eaten for dinner this evening, I will not stop eating, nor does that make it impossible for a meal to be made that is even more delicious one day.
The great thing about games is that developers will always be creating fresh ideas. For that, we should be grateful, because it means that there will be more amazing games to play in the future. But that doesn't detract from what SMG2 is right now. Check out the last three sentence of the review. They would seem to speak directly to you: "Super Mario Galaxy 2 is so phenomenal that it's difficult to imagine where Mario could possibly go in the future. But that's hardly your concern now. Mario proves that he is still the king of fun."Kevin-V
Enjoy.
I see that, i disagree with Kevin on that merit, for if a game is close to perfect, why give it a 10 instead of the Fitting 9.5?Because that would mean there where flaws & faults the player could find that would warrant the .5 point deduction. Gamespot didn't give anything in the 'cons' section because they found no faults. The game is at the pinnacle of perfection of what critics expect from a platformer. If it was a superb platformer with an average camera or a poor finale etc, a 9.5 might be warranted.
