Well I've played a lot of games this gen many great if I can say so, games such as mass effect, dead rising, portal, TOV, MGS4, uncharted and many others have given me a lot of memorable gaming experinces. The problem is that non of the games that are out now this gen have had that special magic you can't really explain it's just there and make those games the best. What I'm talking about is different for every person and as for me I'm talking about games like Re2 and REmake, ZeldaOOT and majora's mask, super mario world, super metroid, Half life 1&2(pc), FF 6&7, and many others that defined my enjoyment of this industry with the years. IMO gaming and developers have become too dependant on graphics or better technology in general that forget how to make a memorable game that has it's own unique approach to gameplay. Whenever a game comes out and has a new feature that seems popular then a lot of developers many with great talent such as naughty dog and bioware copy such feature to their games because that's what people are playing. When GeOW came with the now popular cover mechanic then mass effect and uncharted had to implement it too. This is not new to the game's industry but it's more evident this gen more than ever. Also enphasis on graphics and not gameplay inprovements or techniques is another factor that contributes to this as I mentioned before. Every new game has to be the new graphics king as inspired by gamers of today and developers have been affected by this as well that new games now are graphics first then gameplay(I'm looking at games such as heavenly sword, GeOW, far cry 2, the darkness, LO all great looking games that could have been better in the gameplay department). The opposite of that arguement is SOTC and GTA series which are games that are brilliant in the gameplay deparment(not perfect) and not so much about graphics. Then there are games, that I have seen none this gen, such as zelda oot and the jak series and the half life series and some mario platformers that have both brilliant gameplay and awsome graphics. So what do you people think of the games this generation, discuss please... no fanboy crap please too. This has all been in my opinion of course so I'm sorry if this offends anybody lol

It's a great gen, but it's not better than certain previous gens, so many games failed to live up to the hype for me.

There is no way I am reading that wall of text, but I do agree. They don't make games like they used to. It seems everyone is more worried about graphics, than gameplay. There are a few exceptions like the great folks at Valve, and a handfull of others. Don't get me wrong, I am a big sucker for pretty visuals, but not in place of good gameplay, and story. Something else I miss is long endings. I loved watching a 30 minute ending after playing a game. It made everything worth it. I do not like the current trend of 5 second endings at all.

I have to respectfully disagree. I've played a lot of stuff this generation that's hit me just as hard as some of the classics mentioned in this thread. Call of Duty 4 marked my worst shooter addiction since Counter-Strike. Oblivion, BioShock, Gears Of War, Mass Effect, all absolutely great and memorable experiences for me. I understand what you're saying about a lot of different developers taking ideas from what's popular, but I certainly don't feel like it's choked the artistic creativity of this generation. Far from it.

this gen suks, the only games that have truely wowed me so far this gen are UT3 (the PS3 version was a really good direction for Pc to console ports), NMH and Armored Core 4. Street Fighter 4, Gundam Musou 2, King of Fighters 12, and Final Fantasy versus 13 are the only games coming out in the next 2 years (that i know of so far) that I think will truely wow me

I'm not satisfied with your post. No, I understand where you're coming from :P. There are some true gems so far this gen, but they may not be games you like... If MGS4, SMG, and Orange Box haven't swayed your view then I'm not sure what will :(. Hopefully ICO 3 and RE5 make you feel better.

yep everyone says that and then delay delay delay. todays gen you only get a great game like 3 times a year which I think is terrible, old gen satisfied people more often. I mean honestly there were only like 5great games 2008 and half of them aren't the genre I like, but every now and then in this gen you get a game like fallout 3 and believe it was all worth it until that begins to get boring or you complete it, in my case finishing games is usually a matter of days because games now seem a lot shorter.

It's a great gen man. We have all the goodies of current gen, combined with downloadable goodies and backwards compatibility of the past. Personally, I love it.

I don't like shooters that much, so I feel like the industry has totally turned its back on me. There are only like 4 games released per year that even have potential of interesting me. God help me if one of them is a bomb. None of my taste have changed since last gen, but its like the industry has totally forsaken like every genre that I really enjoyed. The only stand out awesome game to me this gen has been Mass Effect. That game holds up with the best of the best of last gen. But i'm a Bio-Ware fanboy (I still hate them for bringing the next KOTOR exclusively to PC despite the series selling better on consoles and PC gamers not caring at all about any non-WoW MMO) so that was expected. Fallout 3 was ok, but its easy to burn out on it imo. The main story is crap so after you get tired of doing missions that a cleverly designed, "go here to solve. You go there and its, 'Im sorry Mario but the princess is actually over there" sidequests, the game is pretty much over for you. Lost Odyssey was ok. I can only play most games about 50% of the way through this gen. The story either doesn't compel me to finish it or there is so gameplay issue that makes me get sick of the title.

Too be honest that's kind of how I felt about the last gen. Nothing on PS2 or XBOX seemed to satisfy me quite as much as some of the games I had for my N64. But maybe that's just beacuse I was getting older and harder to satisfy...

Anyway. I think theres some great titles out this gen, and it looks like theres a few more coming. I guess im pretty satisfied.

First of all organize your post, second of all I agree.

There are many factors that may come into play. Its hard for me to put them into words though.

I think overall there is a lack of creativity and excitement put into game making.

Maybe because its too expensive to try something new. Maybe because the game makers of old were still young and had a lot of ideas to try out, but now they're running out. Maybe because its too expensive for new developers to emerge. Maybe because making games has reached a point where 3D is not new, where developing engaging stories is not revolutionary, etc.

I personally believe that the majority of it surrounds expenses and we might be better off without the level of technology we've achieved. It seems to me that while the tech might get cheaper over time, as games get more sophisticated you have to higher more people and their jobs are more complicated, intense, and specialized.

hakana your maybe right about that and yes we do get a lot of downloads in this day and age but come on I want a real game (Yes I know Im hard to satisfy but still.) all I expect is a single quality game a month nothing more, even if it was one every two months. I am just not satisfied that for the price we pay for games, we really should be getting better service.

N64 which I still have. can you believe that the number 1 game for 10yrs running Ocarina of Time is still the best game in the world. (One of my favorite games) Come on wheres the ambition, wheres the drive to knock it off the charts onto its face with a game thats 3 times longer, has a greater story, more characters, more features. AND ABOVE ALL ELSE DECENT GAMEPLAY THAT I WON'T BE ABLE TO COMPLETE FOR AT LEAST A MONTH!

Im not reading that, no paragarphs. But this gen has been pretty good, although it is seriously lacking original and quirky games. I miss games like Cubivore, Chibi Robo, Katamari. Pyschonauts, etc.

Your not satisfied with the games this gen. I'm not satisfied with GAMERS this gen. Games are made for entertainment...what do you guys want to be GAMERS....or CRITICS? Everyone has an opinion YES....but it seems like the majority of gamers have a weird process with games this gen. The critics get started from the first vids of the game...if not the announcement of games. The critics are looking at every pixel and are quick to point out any flaw in every game. Wheres the fun in that? Too quick to compair one game vs. another so much to where they seem like they are thinking about "other" games while playing whats in their console. Why? I have been gaming since Atari.....I HAD a problem with the games this gen. WHY? Because It seemed like they were Xing out the Single player games in favor for Multiplayer Modes. I just played what was out there and low and behold....Dead Space, MGS4, Mass Effect, Bio Shock, GTA4, Assassins Creed (yes assassins creed), and Fable II came through and gave me what I like. SINGLE PLAYER. Other than that....this Gen has provided so many games in different Genres that I cant see your point. They are all nice games, again I just think everyone wants to be a critic and THEY are ruining their own Gaming experience because of it.

its not that. Games of this gen die to quickly. What makes a great game is nothing other then great gameplay, good story and lastly the game lasts longer then five minutes. games of this gen with all the graphics and physics are supposed to be better then the predecessors. And simply they are not! even pong lasts better most games in this gen, I'm not talking about all games but most at least 70%.

You are stuck with that Nostalgic factor. Once this gen is over and you look back on it you will think it was an amazing gen, I guarantee that. It is hard to really think something is amazing when it is going on. That is because it has become the distant past where you can look back and remember all those great times. 6-10 years from now you will look back at this gen and be saying the same thing about the current gen then.

The games this Gen die to quick? To you? To me...games this gen last longer than other the previous generation of game. The Current Generation of games has longevity as far as Single player, Co-op Campain, Multiplayer , and Download Content. Yeah last gen games had multiple endings etc too, but stuff like achievements/throphies added to game go past just playing split screen etc. Games are supposed to be better than the predecessor but just as soon as someone tries to take a game in a different direction AGAIN the CRITICS will cry, complain, point and deduct points. lol.

For example..I thought Resident Evil 4 was the best...but gamers would complain about the over the shoulder view when you aim etc. Or that its not scary, Or I dont like that they dont have "zombies". You cant please this gens gamer. You see a game like GTA4 that has a great deal of upgrades and gamers will say...."its not San Andreas". Oh my freaking god.....If it WAS like San Andreas they would complain that its shovelware or something. Just Complain....complain....complain. The game is great, I like the additions. Games this Gen are outstanding. I think....to get a game HD...for 60 dollars that you can play for MONTHS like COD4, thats a Bargain. Not all games are like that.....but your saying that EVERY game last gen was noteworthy? C'mon.

achievements and trophies are a nice factor but they do not complete or make a great game, if anything they only make you annoyed that even the consoles in this gen die every year, I'm not talking about my personal experiences, but a lot of gamers buy a ps2 or ps3 one year and before you know it (unreadable disc) Xboxs are made to break and so are half the controllers, I mean who springloads a controller microsoft. You know it will break. My snes, n64, ps1, nes, gameboy have lasted for over a decade in fact a decade and a half, compared to that this gens consoles are a disgrace. I expect faults but ones that will cost me another hundred pounds to fix, when all they do is open the console up undo a screw and say they are done.

Yes, this gen sucks. I've gotten some mild enjoyment out of Gears 1, but that's it. PC has been pretty stale too, and I have yet to see any game on the wii or ps3 that's worth buying.

Now were talking about faulty hardware? Well...okay. With time...it seems like the definition of a hardcore gamer changed. I'm an old school gamer, I consider myself a hardcore gamer because I play games ALOT, plus I play almost every type of game. So...hardcore gamer. Now I make that point to say...Look at Atari, Nintendo, Sega Genesis, whatever. I broke them all. I play so much that I remember PS2's having unreadable disc messages. I remember having to blow in to my nintendo games etc. I broke it all. If you use anything ALOT it will break. The games now are on discs...but the old other consoles had games made to where you could toss them into the wall and they would be okay. You could even throw an atari and it would be okay. I mean...the 360 is overboard, but eh...I play that like I'm losing my mind too. So I just get more than one console to easy the workload on all of them. Again....this Gen. GREAT, the games....GREAT.

The main problem I have with this gen is that there are lots of games that don't live up to the hype and I think there's too many overrated ones. PS3's price, 360's RROD and Wii's shovelware are one thing, but what I just said happens more often, and that's not a good thing.

This generation of gaming has been one of the best I've personally been part of. There is SO much software on the market, especially if you own 3 consoles + PC, its really overwhelming.

[QUOTE="MortalDecay"] Don't get me wrong, I am a big sucker for pretty visuals, but not in place of good gameplay, and story. Something else I miss is long endings. I loved watching a 30 minute ending after playing a game. It made everything worth it. I do not like the current trend of 5 second endings at all.

I agree with this entirely. I really miss the days where gameplay and story were the focus, and those endings were great. The average attention span of a gamer is rather low though, many of them are so hyped up on caffeine and sugar that they can't sit still for a few minutes let alone watch an epic 30 minute cutscene. This generation I have been very disappointed. Some games did surprise me though. Fallout 3 surprised me a bit, as did Timeshift (for not being an entirely mediocre piece of garbage), and of course Mass Effect. That one got me pretty good. A lot of the most hyped games disappointed though. I was let down by Halo 3, the entire CoD series bar 2, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Gears of War 1/2, and a few other more minor titles were disappointing as well. A lot of this was due to the overhyping by the developers. Many times (Bioshock is most memorable for this) they skewed their words so much that it made it sound like I'd be playing a free-roaming action-RPG with several deep, meaningful choices in an underwater city, fully open and explorable. Gears of War 2's story was a decent improvement, but honestly for the "huge emphasis" that they put on storyline and character development (they seemed to go pretty deep for an FPS...with characters that lasted no more than a few chapters) it was a letdown. Of course then there's the online portion...I don't want to get into that. Let's hope this generation improves over the next few years.

you may not believe this but I'm hardcore gamer, I have had all but about three consoles including the rubbish ones, i have played all genre of games from kids, sports, shoot ems, adventures, rpgs and everything else. I have played my N64, my gameboys and my snes and ps1 longer then i've played my x360 and it has Red Light Doom. Come on that would have never been tolerated 2000. I am not saying all games of gen are bad and i'm not puting all the blame on the developers but god come on, everything about old gens is better then todays gens except graphics, physics and in some cases story, the gameplay is not. rather play Goldeneye 64 then gears of war 1 not at first but after a week I would. Mianly because it only took me 14hours to complete Gears.

I really do not AGREE with the last gen of games having better gameplay at all. This gen of game might not have a story that wows an adult the same way it would a teen. I believe that they have a better means of telling the story. I remember the games that told a long story at the end...but after looking back. It was soley to make sense of what they heck you were doing the entire time. With the current gen, the story is being told while playing...during the gameplay. You dont have to wait for cutscenes in most games. Look at Drakes.....yeah it has cutscenes but the story unfolds while your playing. As far as the Gameplay of last gen....C'mon...the current gens gameplay trumps that easy. Gameplay is better in almost EVERY genre.

i think this gen, i thought it would be a wow factor in regards to HD Gaming however after looking at so many games when HD Starting and now i dont think there is a wow factor ANYMORE because good looking games don't equal gameplay.

I use to love fifa soccer and pes, now its just got boring, i think the 1st ever fifa was the best of the days.

Paragraphs are your friends.:) Seriously.:| It might not be your case, but i'm very satisfied with games this gen. There are plenty of great games out there. As for games with that special magic, in my case MGS4 is one of them. It was very special to me and it's a game i will remember for the rest of my life.

I completely agree with this thread. This generation has been by far the worst generation in the history of gaming. I started round that SNES/GENESIS days, I liked every single gen up until this one. I'm not being a tough cookie or hard to please. Developers are simply not catering to me whatsoever. All it is is shooters, shooters, shooters, constant dumbing down of games, milkage, gimmicks, great genres such as survival horror completely dying off and being molded into shooters, games getting insanely easier. It's completely apparent to me what is happening here. I haven't gotten hard to please or grown out of gaming. This generation has indeed been the worst one of the lot.
