I agree they should just release a finished product the first time. However they won't change practices because 1 person says to.

If companies could prevent overheating, I'm sure they would've already done so ages ago.

Slim versions come with better technology and lower costs that are only feasible later on.

This. Cost efficient. And no one ain't forcing you to buy one. Replacing your phat PS3 with another much later, might actually be more expensive.

The redesigned, slimmer version of the PlayStation 3 (commonly referred to as the "PS3 Slim" and officially branded "PS3") is currently the only model in production. It features an upgradeable 120 GB, 160 GB,[46][47] 250 GB or 320 GB[46][47] hard drive and is 33% smaller, 36% lighter and consumes 34% (CECH-20xx) or 45% (CECH-21xx) less power than the previous model,[38][84][85] or one third of the original PS3 model. The Cell microprocessor has moved to a 45 nm manufacturing process, which lets it run cooler and quieter than previous models, and the cooling system has been redesigned.[86] The RSX moved to a 40 nm process [87] in the latest revision. The PS3 slim also includes support for CEC (more commonly referred to by its manufacturer brandings of BraviaSync, VIERA Link, EasyLink etc.) which allows control of the console over HDMI by using the TV's remote control. The PS3 Slim no longer has the "main power" switch like the previous PS3 models, similar to redesigned PlayStation 2 slim. Support for emulation to play PS2 titles is not present in the Slim version.[38][84]

In that case you would be begging for the consoles to be released about 3-4 years later in order for them to be perfected.

Anyway, if your warranty has expired, fix them yourself.

Great that you feel that way. Microsoft and Sony's strategy ( and it has worked) is to continue to make their consoles "fresh" a.k.a sell more units. In theory it's stupid, but A. You don't have to buy it, so why complain? They aren't forcing you to buy a new console.

i kind of agree. yes its to make the hardware better and prevent overheating and adding new features and stuff, but i think the main reason they do it is because they get the materials cheaper and it also breathes new life into the console. its almost like a re-launch of sorts

It's the crappy lead-free solder that they use to attach the GPUs to the motherboards. It is too brittle, and if the motherboard flexes when it gets hot, the solder connections can break.

simple as this, companies would rather offer a more energy efficient, cost effective model for their consoles then to not, the whole "slim" redesign thing is just a marketing ploy, they could easily have released the lower cost, more energy efficient models that looked the exact same

Um, the product IS a finished product when it is released. There's always going to be issues with electronics. People spend 5000 dollars on tvs and there still tends to be issues. It's the way of life. The only console that I would consider to be unfinished is the 360--it was made with a BUILT IN error letting you know your console was dead. That is pretty bogus.

Often times, companies don't have the ability to shrink things like die sizes instnataneously, and perform redesigns until later on in the products life.

I don't agree I like slim versions they offer us cheaper prices and a better more refined product. No company can go into the future and get all the refinement of their systems design and cheaper technologies. If you really want to me pissed off at unfinished products look at the ps3 they told us it would contain 2 hdmi, 2 ethernet, 5 or so usb..etc..etc and it came out with pretty much none of those extra ports.

Lol, do you really think they make slim versions because their products are unfinished? They're finished with their first ideration of consoles (well, Microsoft's xbox 360 wasn't so, but that was only one mistake, I'm sure they learned from their mistakes) it's just that as time goes on and better technology comes; so does cheaper, and more elegant solutions for consoles. PS3 slim is more eco-friendly, power-efficient, space-efficient, and heat-efficient than the PS3 fat. It's also cheaper to produce for Sony (hence the $100 price drop when they announced the PS3 Slim. It's better for the consumer and manufacturer when they make these. Though tbh I much prefer my PS3 fat because it's seck-sey ;) PS3 slim just doesn't have the shinies and dem fats that make the PS3 fat so much nicer (or seck-sey-er).

I prefer my 80G Phat Trey to how the Slim looks, but the fact it consumes much less power entices me. Some of us have bills to pay.

Then you never had an NES. Everyone who owned one could tell you about having to make sure the cartridges were put in just far enough to get them to run, the blowing in the cartridges, etc. Any electronic item is susceptible to failure. Next gen Microsoft's console will probably be stable and another one of the consoles will get the rep for being shoddy.

What do trophies have to do with anything? They're tied to your PSN ID, not your console.

It's slimmer than the original PS3, meaning it's a PS3 slim.
