One of the reasons people liked the PS1 so much was that it was so much cooler than Nintendo. Sony didn't censor anything and welcomed a huge variety of games. The PS1 was "interesting" and "cool". The PS2 was viewed as the "sequel to cool". But then the coolness runs out and Sony presents the PS3 as a technological machine. What is with those odd PS3 commercials? That's not cool. It's just strange. Most people don't care about power, so long as the machine and the games are interesting.
This is also the problem with the 360. Microsoft is known as a pc software company, so they're fighting an uphill battle from the start. But also, they're presenting the 360 as a technological machine. The commercials are better than Sony's, but upon seeing the games, people wonder "Okay...what's different about it?" ...then forget about it shortly later.
Then there is the Wii which is presenting the system as a purely fun experience. It's got an "interesting" new controller and the commercials show people gathered together having fun. It's a smooth looking system. "Gimmick" or not, it's cool and fresh in the eyes of the public.
The truth is people care about games and not how much power a system has. If the PS3 had been $300 with inferior graphics to the 360 yet had THE BEST, FRESHEST GAMES EVER SEEN, wouldn't you get excited over it? I sure as hell would.
It's all about the games. Always has been, always will be. GAMES make or break any system.
