...while the 360 and PS3 and their successors (if any) will languish in their fifteen minutes of lime light before being forgotten forever.

Before you say it, YES, the 360 and PS3 and every single video game console that has been made and will ever be made are all toys, as much as insecure fanboys what to claim otherwise.

I like you much better when you weren't a rabid Nintendo fanboy and were leaning to getting a 360. What a difference a year makes.

It's in Rochester, New York. Most of the toys that were inducted are classics that pretty much everyone has used or played with (e.g. Lego blocks, Monopoly, Checkers, etc.).

Yes, one of the toys is the cardboard box. Yes, as in a simple cardboard box. The Wii will have some great company.

Well, I already have a 360, and it has the Big Daddy figurine standing next to it right now. :D But I can also recognize the makings of a paradigm shift. The haters, on the other hand, are all short-sighted and cemented in their ways.

Other notable Hall of Fame toys

Jacks, Checkers, Jump Rope, Play-Doh, Silly Putty, and Marbles. As I spend this weekend playing Bioshock and NCAA Football on a 56" 1080p HDTV I will try to contain my excitement knowing that the experience will never rank up there with such amazing and exciting toys.

When I was 10 I tried to make the Millenium Falcon cockpit out of a box our new refridgerator came in. I was cutting out the windows with a steak-knife and it left a 4" gash in my arm that needed multiple stitches.

**** the cardboard box.

Belittling the classics now? The basic instruments of home entertainment?

That's what PS360 fanboys are filled with: disrespect.

I'm not a fanboy of anything. Depending on whatever game I'm playing that week my preference in systems can change. And yes that Wii sometimes is at the top of my list.

Not really. Games similar to those made 10 years ago, even 15 years ago, are still being made now. The only thing that's changed about consoles is that they've tried to incorporate multimedia, but the core console experience and the main reason for playing games is still the same as it ever was.

So anything that provides entertainment is a toy? A DVD player is a toy? A collection of works by Shakespeare is a toy?

According to the ESA, the average age of the most frequent game buyer is38 years old. In 2007, 92 percent of computer game buyers and 80 percent of console game buyers were over the age of 18.

Does it matter? My definition still encompasses all home consoles AND all toys. Until you can successfully identify a set of qualities about home consoles that make them mutually exclusive from all other toys, I'm still right.

Video game consoles = toys.

Edit: Fine, the games are toys, the consoles are the interface. That means toys > consoles.

Actually, neither of us would be right as each definition is merely our quantitative opinion of an abstract idea.

Wrong again. Also according to the ESA the average game player is 33 years old and has been playing games for12 years.

Actually:

For Console Gamers...

* Forty percent of most frequent game players are under eighteen years old.
* Thirty-five percent of most frequent game players are between 18 and 35 years old.
* Twenty-five percent of most frequent game players are over 35 years old.

As much as the adult audience has grown, the young audience still dominates.

The simple meaning of a toy according to Webster is "something for a child to play with". When I was 9 my dad bought me a pump action 410 gauge shotgun and I could use it whenever I wanted to kill nutrea in some of our stock tanks. According to marajntilla a shotgun is toy.

I think he meant you to use it to kill nutrea, and not to "play" with it.

Later on in the future, I think videogames will be accepted as a leisure form of entertainment. Probrably that won't happen for another 20-30 years.

They're not toys- they are consoles. :|

Keep telling yourself that as you shop in the "PS3/360 Games" aisles of Best Buy or EBGames and see yourself picking up the same games as the 12 year old kid standing next to you.

According to the ESA, the average age of the most frequent game buyer is38 years old. In 2007, 92 percent of computer game buyers and 80 percent of console game buyers were over the age of 18.

Game buyers. Not game players. I can bet you that those 38 year old buyers often have a 10-15 year old player standing next to them salivating.

So 60% of the most frequent gamers are over the age of 18. Thank you for helping my arguement.

Sure, why not? If that's the definition you want to use for "toy," then video games are still definitely toys. And it's not "according to me" if you pulled that definition out of the dictionary.
