I have owned and enjoyed my Xbox 360 since I first got it in September 2006. I currently have 5 games for the system (along with several Live Arcade games) and I've escaped these last 7 months with nothing more than a couple of very minor freeze-ups.

Yet still, I can't seem to shake the notion that my Xbox 360 is something of a time-bomb; a failure waiting to happen. With the numerous reports of hardware failures, it's been a bit difficult to come by a 360 owner who isn't on their 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th system. My system has worked almost flawlessly since I first got it, but all of these reports of hardware failures have me at unease. I feel like my 360 will inevitably show me the "3 red lights of death", it's just a matter of when. Because of this fear in my system's failure, I have become reluctant to spend any time/money on the system. I don't want to waste either time or money on a system that will end up failing me.

So, should I be so concerned about the health of my 360? Am I worrying too much? Sure, I may be able to send the unit back for repair (assuming it is still under warrently if it fails) but after hearing all of the horror stories, I would just like to own one console and have it work for me.

Between this, the newly announced Elite, the PS3 included Wi-Fi, and the string of awsome-looking PS3 exclusives coming later this year (Lair, Rachet & Clank, Warhawk, etc.) I'm starting to wonder if I should just sell my 360+games while it's still working, wait a year, then buy a PS3 when it's cheaper.

Am I worrying too much? Is anyone else in the same boat as me?

Dude. Even I'm in fear of my 360 going into eternal sleep. It already has hardware problems, but minor ones.

I believe the failure rate is pegged somewhere around 6%. Nothing to get "frightened" about. As long as you are still on warranty you will be fine.

This whole deal is being blown severely out of proportion.

Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.

luckily the representives are or were very helpful for me at least.

My warranty expired and I calmly explained to them the rings of death making it clear that the issue was hardware failure.

I also made it clear that I won't pay to repair something that Microsoft screwed up. She asked for the serial number and I sent it to Texas and got it back in 6 days. It was pretty simple and I get another year warranty for this new one.

The 360 is kinda like life, you never know when it's going to end so just enjoy EVER SINGLE SECOND.

Cheers.

I have a premium white xbox 360. I bought it in June 2006 and I got like 12 games. I have never gotten a warrenty for a console and I didn't get one for my 360. It still works pretty good and if it does break down on me than I will buy the black elite 360.

So you were actually able to get it replaced under implied warranty? Nice.

Best bet would be to put it vertical, keep the brick/system was far away as possible. And just play it and enjoy! That's what I'm doing. If it breaks down and your warrenty expires, call microsoft and tell them they screwed up..just beat them down.

You read about that implied warranty thing too? It seems if you get the right representive and make it clear that it is hardware failure. (explain the symptoms of the rings, the screen glitching up when it loads, color distortion, ect.) It worked for me and I got mine in December 2006. No warranty, it broke in March 07 so I basically was three months past the announced warranty but I still got it reparied or flat out replaced for free. I dunno if the one I have now is my old one or a new one.

I'm guessing almost all 360's built prior to the planned 65nm chip will have fried themselves at some point in the next 5 years. Excessive heat causese circuit degredation that destroys chips over time.... that's why PC overclockers always warn to keep it under a certain temp and that it will shorten the life. 360 runs hot enough to cook eggs on the heatsink in seconds (there's a video on youtube) so it can't be good.

Have you seen the video for the temporary fix? It involves wrapping the 360 in towels for 10-15 minutes and preventing it from breathing.

That is a misconception fueled by fakeboys who report having a bricked console when they do not even own one.

well... there's a survey on the net pointing out that the 360 has more than 50% of failure rate. that's serious, just check it out at google.

My friend has a launch 360 (AU launch) and it's worked really well, no problems whatsoever.

Don't worry so much about it. As long as you have the warranty you're OK.
