Poll In general, how long into a game do you realize it's not for you? (45 votes)

Instantly - I'm just that good. 38%
A few hours 42%
More than a few but less than several 4%
After several hours 7%
I finish games regardless. 9%

I usually don't give up on a game in most cases. I try to play all the way through even if I'm not enjoying it that much. I know, sounds a little crazy, but I try to be fair and open minded until the end. As far as long how it takes for me to realize it's not for me, I have a hunch early on and I try to keep playing to see if I'm wrong. And by then I just want to finish it since I put in the time lol. How about you, SW?

I Play the game for few hours. If I don't get any kind of fun then it's not for me.

For example: I know that games like Thief and Deus Ex are great. But I never could get into them because I kinda don't like first person games that much.

I know if I like most games within the first hour.

Blood borne/Souls are the worst games because of the high difficulty.

If I paid for it I generally try to finish it, but sometimes, (and it's more regular with so-called AAA games nowadays) I just can't be bothered.

I remember having to force myself to finish Crysis 2, the game just droned on for way too long. If that was today id have just given up on it and started playing something else on my backlog. A few months ago, I borrowed my nephews PS4 to play Horizon Zero Dawn and I couldn't bring myself to finish that, same goes for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I managed to finish Hellblade though surprisingly, but I almost put that down too.

Depends a bit on why I quit. Most often I try to stay with a game for a few hours at least, because typically it takes a while before you get the main mechanics and know if you enjoy them.

Some open world games, like say WatchDogs 2, I play for many hours before the tedium really starts to kick in and then I drop them if the end is not near.

Shorter linear games, like Titanfall 2 campaign, I usually power through even though I'm not having that much fun.

Most games it happens pretty fast: 1 hour or maybe 2

But other times you really like the game at first, it grabs you, but after 10 or so hours you realise it's rather boring or unfulfilling.

A few hours.

I was really wanting to like DMC5 but Im not digging it after a few hours.

V is horrible to play as, and there's hardly any puzzles or exploration like previous games.

yeah same.

i find myself liking fewer and fewer games as i get older and loving even less. not sure whether i'm just not a fan of common trends in modern gaming or i'm just becoming more difficult to please

Typically a few hours, but if it's an RPG or something with a lot of build up I usually try to give it a bit longer.

Once I drop it though I drop it hard. I don't care if I just spent $60 on it I'm not going to waste more of my time forcing myself to do something I don't enjoy.

I also don't believe in the backlog concept. I just play what I want when I want.

Depends on the game. Generally a couple of hours or so but for RPGs it can be a bit longer. I follow games media pretty closely though so I typically know whether or not a game will interest me before it even comes out.

Honestly the situation never happens to me. I've been gaming my whole life, and know exactly what I want out of a game. All I generally have to do is read up on the game a little, and watch a little gameplay. I don't buy games unless I know I want them.

No more than 3 hours. If I last outside of that, I will usually see it to completion.

I can usually tell almost instantly. Within 5-10 minutes at the most. The movement mechanics, delay, etc. make or break a game for me right from the very beginning. Along with aim mechanics, it must have inverted controls, and I have to be able to switch my look speed. I also don't like aim acceleration. So... yeah..

It depends.

Oftentimes I immediately don’t enjoy the mechanics and “game feel” the first time I play, and those are things that I have to enjoy and no amount of playtime will change. If I don’t enjoy them off the bat, I don’t continue. These games last a matter of minutes before I put them down.

Then there’s games where I do enjoy both of those aspects but something arises in the mid or late game that makes me stop. Sekiro being the most recent example. I was enjoying it up until it became so unforgiving that it was a frustrating chore to endure. Sad too, as it was a game I so badly wanted to like yet it had that one element that made me like, “yeah....this ain’t for me”.

Usually within an hour or so... there are too many games out nowadays to waste time finishing games I'm not almost immediately enjoying.

I know it by the casing, in the store. If the casing has big eyed anime characters in it, I know its not for me!

That depends as I like to buy blind ever now & then. So I bought a game on sale recently and turned it off after 5mins because I hated it instantly, where as I bought the Division 2 on a whim, and for the most part I hated it for the first few hours but started to like it once I got into the game mechanics. So i'm all over the place.

I would never be a structed gamer though and do research on games as its a hobby. I've found some real gems that had I looked into the game would have never bought it, but it does come with a few stinkers along the way, but that's the joy of gaming you take the good with the bad, and anybody who says they have enjoyed every game they have bought are a lying through their teeth (if they have any lol)

5 minutes maybe. Some games maybe 2 hours. If it doesn't change up enough.

Around an hour or two. I've usually made up my mind about a game before getting it by reading about it and watching it.

My latest mistake was playing AC: Origins for more than 10 hours, thinking what everyone said about it being very different to other AC games was true. It turned out it was the same shit as always, with the addition of lots of unecessary items to manage and skills that weren't fun to use. So it was basically yet another AC game with annoying things added to it. Worst game purchase in a long time for me.

Problem is, sometimes you start a game when your busy in real life and have too much on your mind and just can't sit still long enough to get into it.

That's something I do myself... All too often. It sucks, because you can leave behind some genuinely good games. I've been wanting to start DQXI again, but i'm now into Yakuza 0 on PC.

Not long, usually an hour or so.

I generally try to play it for at least a few hours, though; you never know, might just have a rough start, takes some time to get going. Plus with some games these days they have these super-long prologues and the games don't really open up into the full experience for some time.

20-30 minutes...

Gotta get past the learning curve to evaluate it properly...

And if the learning curve is higher than it's a bad learning curve...

Easy rule honestly.
