In Summer 2005 Sony was on top of the world

They were dominating the console market. The PS2 had seen a level of success that no console had seen since the PS1. They had obliterated the newcomer Microsoft and the old guard Nintendo. They had just released their new handheld the PSP which practially every media outlet was saying would dominate the handheld market (lol). Considering that Nintendo had no hope in the console market and their new handheld was believed by the same media outlets to be an ugly gimmicky fad (again lol) there was no doubt that Sony would soon rule the console AND handheld markets. In contrast Nintendo looked to be on the way out. Yamauchi himself (president of Nintendo) had publicly stated that the failure of the DS would destroy them Then there was the announcement of the PS3. This was the succesor to the most successful console in the world and NOTHING could stop it from winning. No-one dared to question its inevitable success, this was a given. Every industry analyst and media outlet had it peggd as a a sure thing

Fast forward to today. The PSP has been murdered by the DS and there is practically nothing to look forward to on the system (apart from the obligatory first party stuff and those ports/remakes/multiplats). The PS3 is struggling to get off the ground as gamers decide that they dont want to pay $600 to play some mediocre exclusives and watered down 360 ports.

i dont think it'll happen this generation though, it think it's a given at this point that Sony will have to sturggle just to get by. They're an excellent company though and i sincerely hope that next gen (or the gen after) they can regain their former glory.  and they need to abandon the handheld market and concentrate on consoles STAT!!!!

Sony has failed  with the Psp and now there failing with the Ps3. I wonder whats new with Sony, and i also wonder what the Ps4 is going to be like. :| it just seems like their systems keep getting worse and worse.

Oh and TC, it all went wrong in E3 06 (I think).

They got arrogant. and basically handed Nintendo and Microsoft a chance to win. Thats all those companies needed, a chance. and both companies came in swinging and ready. Microsoft had a generally good launch. they made a system relatively easy to develop for compared to the PS3. it has lots of power. a great online service. there 3 sku may have some bad pricing but it does work to a degree. for those who dont want online, theres the core. For those who want the online theres the premium. For the HD owners theres the elite. Other than that the 3 skus are kind of stupid. With the PS3 where u are stuck with paying for that Bluray player u might not need. Throw in some massive 3rd party support, that includes loss of exclusives on the PS3. and a good variety of genres that cover the AA score, With then 5 AAA titles. With 4 being fun online shooters, and 1 being a great wrpg. The 360 was showing its muscle.

Then the wii happened. Huge casual and nongamer market appeal. If its a Fad, its still gonna sell alot. Its not gonna get to 10 million and stop. Its gonna get to 20-30 million over a 1-2 years. Which will result in more 3rd party support, that will not only make the casual games, but the hardcore games(Nights, DragonQuest swords, No More Heroes, SOul Caliber Legends,etc). The Nintendo 1st party that is still the best in the bus. A highly critical success in Zelda(AAA on gamerankings with a 94, and that 8.8 is its lowest score i believe. Thats a critical success) from the get go. Nice media hype, consistant sell outs leading to more hype. And the wii is a completely different system from the other 2. It relies mostly on innovation motion sensing controls, that should and hopefully lead to innovative gameplay. Plus its the cheapest console, with the games also being cheaper.
All in all, sony helped the other 2 have a chance to win. and the other 2 took it, and have put the PS3 in a huge hole. Sure PS3 can comeback, but the damage is done. SOny lost a good chunk and will lose a good chunk of market share to the other 3. Also they lost that sense of there invincible. The other 2 companies have seen sony as vulnerable and a beatable company.

They made wrong decisions. They decided to focus less on what the consumer wanted and more on what they could do technically. For example, the PSP. Yeah, the screen is amazing, but who honestly wouldn't be willing to trade a bit of screen space for a more comfortable control interface and a second analogue stick?
And then there's the technical behemoth that is the PS3, swollen beyond any hopes of short-term mass market penetration by Sony's insistance upon cramming everything but the kitchen sink into it.

A good company focuses on the consumers. Sony didn't, and now they're paying for it.
