For me, it's Divinity: Original Sin 2. Or Persona 5. Hard to decide. I don't like how long it takes to modify personas in the Velvet Room with all the back and forth between menus and such, or how long overall you spend in the freaking Velvet Room. But that's about it. As for D:OS2, the only criticism I can think of is how freely it lets you respec, which cheapens the experience a bit, but not too bad. What a freakin' great game.

Anyhoo, what's your opinion on the matter, SW?

Thank you for visiting my thread and have a perfectly purple day.

Without a doubt, Horizon: Zero Dawn or Witcher 3: Wild Hunt but I must say that both of these games are near perfect this gen I play so far. While this current-gen is almost over, we still have more games to go but for now, it's both Horizon: Zero Dawn & Witcher 3.

Yakuza 0.

If it had the Dragon Engine used in Yakuza 6 it would be perfect. Along with more VO for side stories

Tough call as I have a few that I would put up there equally. They would be:

- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

- Super Mario Odyssey

- Resident Evil 2 Remake

- Devil May Cry 5

- Forza Horizon 4

- Forza Motorsport 7

I have a feeling that Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition will be right up there as well when I get it next month.

If I really had to make a choice I would probably go with Breath of the Wild.

Evil Within 2

If you loved PS1 era survival horror, this is basically all we have left, especially that I'd consider AAA. I platinum'd this game, and playing Classic Mode, this game was withing throwing distance of perfection. I believe its the most under-rated gem of this generation.

Persona 5 was my top game of 2017 for sure, although HZD/Nier/Odyssey/AC Origins/Wolf2 were all great, but I really liked Wildlands and Hitman as personal favorites. None of them I feel as near perfection for what they are as Evil Within 2. I'd say Odyssey is 2nd, in being perfect collect-a-thon and Persona 3rd for perfect JRPG.

I can't say anything bad about Hollow Knight.

Mario Odyssey failed to catch the Mario 64 magic, and a billion moons was too much. I remember the stars I got in Mario 64. Can't remember the moons. Instead of wanting to play it again, it feels like a chore to collect all that shit again.

Zelda: BotW had no dungeons and bad bosses.

Have to go with Resident Evil 2 remake.

The only thing that lets it down is a streamlined story compared to the original and an inferior duel campaign.

The boss fights could be more creative well, using the same old "shoot the X spot" trope over and over.

Otherwise rock solid.

I can list a few that I thought were pretty close to perfection:

  • Day of Infamy - a return to more classical online FPS
  • Rising Storm 2 - Vietnam done right, and the game really forces you to learn and adapt
  • Battlefield 1 - Captures the war vibe with game modes like Operations and Frontlines. A lot of the maps are insanely good and atmospheric
  • Battlefield V - Drops the ball more than BF1 did, but gunplay and character customization are stand-out
  • Forza Horizon 3 - Just one of the best, and more varried racers around
  • Prey - What it lacks as a shooter it more than makes up for with a fully realised world
  • Dishonored 2 - Every single mission is unique and memorable

Red Dead Redemption 2

Ever played a game that you felt was designed just for you? That's how I felt playing that game.

Spider-Man and Super Mario Odyssey would be my honorable mentions. As far as fun factor goes they are the best games this gen. I've never connected with characters and story like I did in RDR2 in a video game before though and for that reason it is perfect to me.

Between Spiderman, HZD or God Of War.

Edit: forgot about Red Dead redemption 2. That wins for me. The other three tie for second.

Close to perfection, but it sometimes falls just a bit short of the genius that Dishonored 1 was.

But it's more Dishonored, so hey, I love it. I need to finish it one more time going completely high chaos, you can get super creative in that game:

Yeah Inside was really great. I just love these types of games that grab your attention from the moment you start playing them and throughout you are thinking: "What is this world about?" And you want to go deeper and deeper into this fiction.

Tetris Effect because Tetris is one of the closest things to a perfect game, and this version delivers something extra as another layer in a way that really adds to it, especially in VR.

But perfection does not mean best. Perfect just means executing what it set out to do in a way that is flawless.

good choice folks. i'd say it exceeds d1 in genius. the clockwork mansion and crack in the slab both are masterclasses in level design and go beyond what d1 did in that regard. the skill trees and possible combinations of powers in new game+ mode are superior too.

it's not quite perfect. there's three things i can think of which disqualify it - you don't get the mark of the outsider at the start of the game on the second playthrough, forcing you to always play through the first level powerless. similarly, on second playthrough, you don't get to keep your powers in aramis stilton's mansion. and last you can't hold a button to pick up all the coins on a desk (even the terrible thief game let you do that). other than that... pretty much perfect

  • Bloodborne

One of the best game I have ever experienced of all time. In term of world building and lore it easily tops Souls series. Bloodborne does has flaws, it has issues with NG+ experience, bit limited selection of weapons, magic and how invasions work but NG experience was magical. From start to end, so much better than any Souls game experience. Also hunter duel >>>>> Souls duel.

Bloodborne 2 plis

Sonic Mania (plus)

Persona 5

BoTW

RE2

DMC5

Bloodborne is close, but pvp is pretty bad in it

Honorable mentions:

MGSV took many hours of my life. It's an excellent game held back by the reward system from mobile games

MHW is an excellent game

To me it's between Witcher 3 and BoTW, both perfected the craft of open-world games in their own ways and I had lots of trouble putting either of them down and am ashamed to show how many hours I poured into them lol.

Actually, that's how I also see it from @sakaixx, Bloodborne is fast pacing and I for one did like the game more so then Dark Souls and from what I heard, Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice is the same for being fast pace. Sorry but I gotta agree with Sak as well.

Lol, it's all good. It's just that for me, in this genre, nothing beats Souls. DS1 is just so surreal, and I love that kind of stuff.

DS1 was pretty magical as well, I just loves bloodborne more. Its a toss really if you give people a vote which of the 2 is From Soft best game they ever developed. Personally, bloodborne first run was perfect, just perfect. From tutorial all the way to the awesome dlc to finally beating Gehrman. Bloodborne 2 plis.

@Macutchi: I bought Thief because it looked so much like Dishonored. I wish it was even more like Dishonored, lol.

The dust district in Dishonored 2 is also very good. I love that horn sound when the dust kicks in. In fact, the best thing about Dishonored 2 is that each mission is memorable.

Horizon Zero Dawn

The Witcher 3

I just beat The Evil Within 2 and damn it’s pretty freaking good. I want to play it a second time which is rare for me. Started a new game+.

I will see how I feel about it a year from now. I don’t think it’s as good as the 4 I listed, but I had a lot of fun with it. I hope my next playthrough is awesome.

Persona 5. This game ROCKS. My only problem with the game is that the system of exploiting enemies weaknesses (like casting ice on an enemy that is weak to ice) is overpowered. You do extra damage AND get an extra turn. Secondly, a new game + should be harder, but it lets you immediately summon very strong personas from previous sessions.

Witcher 3 is a Nnarly flawless game. Tons of content and almost all missions are interesting. My only complaint is the silly jump animation, but that doesn't matter much.
